Top 100 Companies to Work for. The Top Five starting with #1: Genentech, Wegmans, Valero Energy, Griffin Hospital. The Complete List puts Microsoft at #42 behind Starbucks at #29. Surprise! (Starbucks pays $500 towards tuition to part-timers who work there for more than a year). By clicking on the company links on the List you get stats on employee salaries, turnover, minority hiring etc, learning for instance, that the most common job at Microsoft pays $107,000/year.
  • To give the devil his due, I've known a couple of MS employees who were very happy working there. One has an extremely autistic child, and his health insurance is paying for special therapy that costs tens of thousands of dollars a year, with almost no out-of-pocket from him. This is not considered standard coverage by any stretch of the imagination. If they choose to be, Big Rich Evil Corporations can be very good to their employees. Which makes me wonder what the fuck's wrong with Wal-Mart.
  • What isn't.
  • I scoff at the notion that Nordstroms in Seattle is one of the top companies to work for. I have a good friend who finally quit her slave-driving administrative job there. The company has no sick days for its employees, among many other lovely "benefits." Oh yeah, also, she once told me that the motto in her department was: "If you're early to work, you're on time. If you're on time to work, you're late. And if you're late to work, you're very late." Nice, huh?
  • The company has no sick days for its employees, among many other lovely "benefits." I don't know American labor laws, but isn't this illegal?
  • They probably just have "days off" and you can use them for being sick if you want.
  • Some companies will require you to use a vacation day if you want to be paid for being out sick. Labor laws vary state to state, but I've had a couple of jobs (mom and pop operations, mostly, but still) that did that.
  • Yep, middleclasstool, that's what it is there.
  • Today my assistant said " Suppose Halliburton IS the government?" After pausing to admire the astuteness of this comment, I noticed that Halliburton was not on the list.
  • Whole Foods deserves #15. One of the nicest places to work a shitty job. Very chill people, everyone seems like they want to be there (to a reasonable degree). Good benefits. Good, free food. Very pretty girls and boys.
  • If only the motherfuckers would spring for an open bar for the Christmas Winter Party.
  • Not only does Wegman's deserve to be on that list (it has been #1 a few times), but it is also, hands down, the best grocery store ever. I will be moving soon, and possibly out of Wegman's territory...and this Breaks. My. Heart. Ask anyone who has lived in Wegman's land. It is like a cult. My sister, who lives down the street from a Whole Foods in Manhattan still talks about missing Wegman's 13 years later.
  • > Whole Foods deserves #15 whole foods is my favourite supermarket ever. i went while visiting extended family in boston last year. what a crunchy wonderland! i just wandered around for about an hour agogging at the range of stuff. i'm glad the company treats its staff well.
  • okay, now i have to visit wegman's, it seems.
  • Whole Paycheck more like.
  • My local Wegman's is a total hookup joint. It's like a party atmosphere in there on weekend evenings, full of college students flirting over the produce displays. The coffee bar is always full of snuggling couples.
