Oakes was basically taxed out of Canada. The government passed a number of income tax laws which basically applied to Oakes alone, as he was so much richer than anyone else. His ritzy neogothic home overlooking the Falls was later turned into the corporate headquarters for the Niagara Parks Commission. Of course, there's no public access or anything, it's kept nice and private for the powerful, anonymous honchos that gouge everybody and make outrageously terrible planning decisions run things on our behalf.
(Can I say 'basically' one more time? I don't think I've had my fill. Basically. Thanks.)
Thanks, homeslice.
