Curious George: Where to buy a monitor?
I'm in the market for a 23" CRT computer monitor. Does anyone know a good site for stuff like that? Ideally, I'd like to avoid sales tax and shipping fees.
-
Newegg has a 22" Philips.
-
What country do you live in? What voltage do you use? Which hemisphere should the magnetic shit be set for? Why do I feel I already know the answer to these questions?
-
Really, a CRT? With the price of LCDs at an all time low, I'm surprised that people are still buying those radiation spewing, hulking behemoth CRTs.
-
CRTs are still superior to LCDs for photography and design stuff (more accurate/consistent color) and gaming (since they support many different resolutions about equally well). I'd love to have an LCD at the office, though.
-
And unless you live somewhere (or near somewhere) that doesn't charge sales tax, I'd be surprised if you were able avoid both sales tax and shipping costs.
-
I would suggest a store.... Actually, unless you find a supper cheaper deal online, a crt monitor that large would likely weigh more than 50 pounds so free shipping seems unlikely. Therefore that shipping cost would eliminate any savings found by buying online.
-
Check craigslist, if there's a community in your area.
-
Wolof, you are correct; I'm an arrogant yet provincial USian. Sorry.
-
Hey False Keraptis see if there are any Computer Recycling facilities in your area. I found some great used monitors at places like those for dead cheap. You usually have to dig through a bunch of crap before you find a good one, but in the end, it may only cost you $20. Also check local Universities they usually throw away computer stuff once a year.
-
get a lcd PROJECTOR...they are right cool and ever so cheap now...
-
Keraptis -- it's completely cool. Consider, however, that we have members pretty much all over the world (well, ok, not everywhere), and encourage your weird friends from whacky places to sign up!

When I was looking around last year, Best Buy and such had the best prices. I think I bought mine online, and then picked it up in store. Avoid the shipping charges, but get a better deal. Nowadays it can be tough to find good quality monitors since the market is so small. Most people buying CRT's are buying generic 15" or 17" ones because they're cheaper than LCDs. I mean, look at that newegg link: $40 shipping!

i'd start at geek.com to get an idea of what's out there. i'm not sure you'll find anything > 22" in new crt these days.
