Curious George: Can anybody suggest a way to get text out of my scanner and into my Mac? (OSX.3.8) I have been trying to use ABBYY Fine Reader Pro for this purpose, and am getting nothing but gibberish.
Preference will be given to cheap or free solutions. Correspondence will be entered into. Thank you for reading!

text out of your scanner?
-
Yes, that's exactly what I want.
-
I once spilled a whole mess of text into my scanner. Took several hours and a wet/dry vacuum to get all those little buggers out.

Wolof - Project Gutenberg Distributed Proofreading uses ABBYY. There is this entry in the FAQ on using it plus a forum. (free registration as a pgdp member required). Hope this helps.

What resolution are you scanning at? I use 600dpi black and white and get pretty good results.
-
300 dpi, but the Gutenberg page says that's fine. Thanks for the tips. This is pretty irritating.

didn't your scanner come with ocr (optical char. recognition) software? or did you get one of those 'Flintstones' scanners with the little bird inside with a chisel? p.s. i <3 my canoscan...had it for yeeears now and no dropouts...thats 'cause it uses the LEDs instead of a cathode tube...and boy is it slim...

On windows I usually scan at 400dpi, as it tends to do a bit better job on copies of copies than 300. I like Omnipage Pro better than ABBYY's product (although they look almost identical). But again, that is on windows, not mac. Both are fairly pricy if one were to pay for them... or so I'm told...
