Black Hole Sun, Won't You Come... Black hole destroys star The pictures are just illustrations, but fairly cool nonetheless
  • Meh. I destroyed a star once. Big whoop.
  • wouldn't the black hole bend the light rays around it so it wouldn't look so cleanly circular? (i know VERY little about this, just a guess)
  • Hey! I just came out of a seminar talk on black holes. I've also applied for a postoc where one of the research topics is black holes (but I don't think I got the postdoc). As for the pictures, the hole itself would look basically circular. The rays coming from behind the black hole would be bent due to graviational lensing, but the point of the artist's rendition isn't so much the lensing by the BH as it is the tidal forces between the BH and the former star.
  • I quit reading one I found out the star wasn't Barbara Streisand.
  • {this sucks} (insert smiley here)
  • (insert goatse here)
  • In Soviet Russia, goatse inserts *you*.
  • Black holes frighten me. No, seriously - I have this irrational fear that I'll be in space, and it will suck me in, and crush me - only time is being crushed too, and so I'm being crushed FOREVER. No more Star Trek novels before bed.
  • I'm with you jb. Ever since seeing this movie as a kid, I've been terrified of them.
  • Hey! I just came out of a seminar talk on black holes.
I keep waiting for the punchline "and boy, are my arms tired!". ... I'll just get my coat, then.
