The Gorillaz Live. Yes the cartoon band performed live at the MTV Europe Music awards. (link to Quicktime)

A little more on how it was done. [via mefi]

  • Meh.
  • Fih.
  • Actually, I did have something to say. And it is this. Why did they choose to make them "lifesize"? If I was an animated rockstar, I'd want to be 10 meters tall! And Naked! With lazer beams shooting from my eyeballs, and smoke belching from my ass.
  • They weren't lifesize, were they? I thought they were billboard sized.
  • It was pretty cool, but I don't get the near unbridled amazement from so many over on the Mefi thread.
  • The 2 background singers (real humans) seemed about the same size as the animated dudes to me. It might have been fun to see the show live, but the video is so blurry it's hard to see the magic.
  • They did something similar - actually, I think it looked better, aside from the screens being far more obvious - at the 2002 Brit Awards.
  • If I was an animated rockstar, I'd want to be 10 meters tall! And Naked! With lazer beams shooting from my eyeballs, and smoke belching from my ass. And this is exactly why you'll never be allowed to be an animated rockstar.
  • If i was an animated rockstar, I'd totally be naked with disco balls where my . . uh . . balls would be. And my throbbing member would sing harmony.
  • The 2 background singers (real humans) Or, as their mums still call them, De La Soul.
  • I vote for cool link. I saw on Milk and Cookies last week though. On a side note Kid Koala, Gorillaz collaborator performed live here in my neck of the woods last night and rocked the place hard. "Gorillaz" has a neat concept, and it's pretty original. They assembled some awesome musicians like Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads and Damon Albarn from Blur. Plus the illustrations are by Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl fame. I am not really into mainstream radio friendly stuff, but I make an exception in their case. it's just good.
  • I'm into all kinds of music, and I have to say I really don't give a shit who/where music comes from, save GG Allin and RAHOWA bands. I agree with Livewire. I have of late, viewed the whole "guilty pleasure" idea as crap. If I like it, I like it.
  • if I was an animated rockstar, I'd make my music actually be good.
  • I think they did a pretty good job with the real time animation, but rendering those characters in 3D sort of queased me out. A little too uncanny valley for my taste. The designs are more likable in 2D, and they would've really popped in contrast to De La Soul. So what's wrong with emphasizing the artifice/cartooniness of the band? That's the point of doing a cartoon band in the first place, isn't it?
  • I liked it. I thought the singer looked pretty cute. Ala Dark Crystal, as someone on Mefi noted.
  • I liked it. I thought the singer looked pretty cute. Ala Dark Crystal, as someone on Mefi noted. Are we talking about gelflings? Or is "Dark Crystal" the stage name of some hot young thing that I don't know about, being unhip?
  • I have of late, viewed the whole "guilty pleasure" idea as crap. If I like it, I like it. One musician, I believe it was the late, great Duke Ellington, once said, "If it sounds good, it is good."
  • BeargGuy, you got it right in one (^_^)
  • Alnedra, one of these days I'll have to meet you in person. (Incidentally, it might be rather cool to meet a gelfling in person, though I'd really wonder what drugs I was on....though now that I think of it, it'd have to be dark crystal meth, wouldn't it?)
  • I would love to meet you as well! Where are you at, BearGuy? Apologies for misspelling your name earlier.
  • Well said Mssr. Bear.
  • Alas, Alnedra, we are separated by an ocean, as I'm an Usaian (right outside Washington, DC as it happens). Regrettably, I won't have a chance to meet you or any of the other England-dwelling monkeys anytime soon, so I'm resticted to to meeting you here, Malton, or KoL.
  • *many hugs to BearGuy and grover96*
