Old British TV
  • I know little about British television, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the Benny Hill page. I had no idea he had a show going in the late 1950s!
  • I wish the Brits used something other than Realplayer. I'd like to watch some of Meet the Penguins.
  • I too have loathed the RealPlayer scourge, until I found RealPlayer Alternative. So far it works great. What's the deal with the RealMedia empire anyway? Eight years later and we can't get a decent open-source codec going?
  • When I saw the post's title, "Old British TV", I flashed on a big picture of Sir Ian McKellen...
  • Diz: Performing Shakespeare? Him holding a cig and saying "Time...Time...Time".... Oh, yes.
  • (actually, i was making a stoopid, mildly risque but ultimately flat little play on "tv".. never mind.)
  • Don't tell me that as a professor of acting, you've never gloried in BBC's "Playing Shakespeare". I had such fond memories of it as an undergrad. The finest Shakespearean actors all '70s out...smoking cigs and doing Richard III monologues. Fantastic!
  • Dr. Z-- LOVED that series, and loved how young and dashing they all were. I still have the biggest crush on Helen Mirren deliciously slicing up speeches from "As You Like It"-- purest heaven. I was taught that series in Grad School, but oddly enough I've never seen it taught since in any of the universities I've been attached to. Most teachers lament that there isn't enough time to read more of the basic canonical plays in the curriculum, let alone watch videos. Shameful...
