  • There's a surprise. I suppose in retrospect it seems quite obvious! Takei is one of my favorite celebs ever. He is a genuinely nice bloke.
  • Was anyone not clued in to this after that episode where the crew of the Enterprise loses their inhibitions and Sulu runs around shirtless challenging people to swordfights?? I mean, hello!

  • I thought he was out of the closet YEARS ago. I could've sworn I read about it in his autobiography, which came out in the mid-90s. "Sakana beach!"
  • I met him at another booksigning at the same store. Very nice guy. I had a long time to talk to him, as he was wrapping up a 3 hour event. The best part of the coversation was when he jokingly chided me for referring to TOS as "The Old Series" instead of "The Original Series". He even called me Captain Kirk. It was AWESOME.
  • It's such common knowledge among the Bay Area sci-fi fans who attend science fiction conventions that I am rather surprised that it's news to anyone else. When it seems like everyone you know personally knows something, it feels like it's universal knowledge. Good on Takei for getting past feeling ashamed. It takes courage and strength of character to get beyond that and make a public announcement, and even more so when it's something that so many still carry prejudice against.
  • At first I thoight, yaeh so what. I mean it hardly comes as a revelation that Sulu was gay to me. But, the more I think about this, the more I realize that this is a great story, really. Imagine what it must have been like to have been a Japanese,interned during the Second World War, and then to grow up gay, in post-war California. To live to see those things that caused you so much personal pain finally become acknowleged as normal and without shame, at the age of 68. Well,all I can is, it must be bitter-sweet. Good for him.

  • My mom and I both read his autobiography back when it came out, and we had this big discussion about whether he was gay or just really discrete, because he was really open about the rest of his life, but never discussed any romantic relationships. Guess I was right and my mom was wrong! /comes from a long line of geeks, apparently

  • I seriously JUST watched the episode (season 1, episode 6?) where Sulu comes running out sans shirt, waiving a sword around like a swashbuckler. So, this wasn't really news some much as it was a clever product tie-in.

  • I think he must have had a skin peel at some point in the 70s or 80s because his skin looks fantastic now as opposed to then. He looks unbelievable for his age, I would say he's had some tasteful cosmetic work done.
