If all you ever do is just write text documents with Microsoft Word, there is NO reason why you shouldn't download OpenOffice.org and use it instead. (And legally it is OpenOffice.org since someone else owns the trademark on the word OpenOffice). If you haven't tried it since the 1.x versions, 2.0 is light years better than the prior version. If you do really complex stuff with word, then there might be some issues, but overall, I can only remember one word document that i had downloaded that OO.o 1.x didn't like and the ability to open and write Microsoft Word files is said to be much better in this new version. The mac version is allegedly not so hot, but if you are using windows or linux, then this is a must download. (of course I write most of my stuff in .rft format, so I'm a bit wierd anyway...)

And in the free software realm, while it may be a bit slower than AbiWord, it's certainly a lot less buggy.
-
I have the old version. Used it once and got frustrated. I created a document and sent it to some friends. They couldn't open it. I gave up on it. Did I do something wrong? -- P.S.: OpenOffice DOES open .doc documents that I receive from others. It works just fine in that regard.

/me poisons himself on two-week old milk.

And at long last, ctrl+arrow moves the cursor a paragraph at a time.

Possum: did you save it in a .doc format or in the Open Office format? If you do the former, it should work fine. If you do the latter, no on else has filters for interpreting it yet.

Just want to say 'Horray!' I use openoffice all the time. Brilliant peice of software, and I'm very much looking forward to having a good basic database system.

Yes, you have to save it in .doc or .rtf or the people with Microsoft Word can't read it. You can just do File|save as... or change the preferences so that it automagically saves it as a more common format.

there only seems to be a 1.1 out for mac

OpenOffice2 is GAY? Had no idea.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
