Curious George: I Want Turquoise Highlights! Bestest cheapest place in Vancouver to give my dark brown hair light greeny-turquoise highlight? Or advice from the do-it-yourselfer?
  • Try Colour Box. Or, a bit of a two-fer; La Riche Directions and some help on how to use it. I can't find a picture of it, but they have a great turqoise shade. Be forewarned though; this stuff will not last long...sort of a standard thing with cool colours.
  • yeah...be prepared to be touching it up a LOT...blues and green wash out really fast...and nothing looks worse than washed out blue hair....they do have these fancy color impregnated combs at the local drugstore though...temporary color i believe, but it looks easy enough to do every day...in the front at least...if you want them in the back, its almost a necessity to have a sympathetic live-in lover willing to do the back for you...often.
  • its almost a necessity to have a sympathetic live-in lover willing to do the back for you...often. Are you still talking about hair color here? This is a standard requirement for my live-ins, but I don't dye my hair.
  • I would say Chop Shop, with Michelle. Highly recommended.
  • Is there a Coupe Bizarre out that way? Can't find no corporate website...
  • ...and nothing looks worse than washed out blue hair... Yes. It looks like you have a slowly dying Smurf on your head. I used to overdye my darkish hair with a mix of Tulip and Flame which looks pretty cool if you like a magenta thing going on. And stays around a hell of a lot longer. This site has the range of Directions colours available.
  • ex: light brown hair, dark blue hair dye. For two minutes it was blue. Then it just looked moldy. I didn't know that was universal - hey, Mofi is very educational! (I'd forgotten about that whole undertaking. And I even helped him dye it. Oy.)
  • I'd say get blonde highlights, streaks, or at least where you want the color first if your hair is very dark brown. Then if you color the blonde bits, they'll take the turquoise better. I've wanted some kind of cool color (like maybe cherry red tips) for a while, but I work at a bank and we have to look conservative. It sucks.
  • I dyed my dark blonde hair fuschia-pink for a few months. It looked cool but I was redoing it constantly, because it would fade and look dirty. Eventually I bleached it out because the upkeep was too much for someone as low-maintenance as me.
  • For home dyeing, I found a reasonably good permanent blue that lasted longer than a week (it made it to 3 without looking dodgy)--I'll check the brand at home. Aveda now does bright colors too, but they started after I stopped dyeing my hair so I don't know much about those.
  • I'll check the brand at home Please do. I'm having a midlife crisis and the wife is out of town. A volatile combination.
  • Found this. Not the brand I used, still need to track that down. My purplish blues would fade to more of an aqua, so you may be in luck.
  • Now I want that stuff, patita. Desperately. Maybe I could do it for Halloween, then pretend it won't wash out...
  • Six words: Glow In the Dark Hair Gel
  • I use Special Effects brand hair dye - I've found that it generally lasts three weeks to a month before it starts fading and looking sad. However, I don't bleach my hair [I go for a deep royal blue], so it doesn't get the mossy look that faded blue dye on yellowish bleached hair gets. Also, my hair just takes well to dye - some people have better luck with hair dying than others. With dark brown hair, you're going to have to bleach to get a lightish color like turquoise to show up. It may be a little hard to do the bleach yourself, if you're doing something as delicate as highlights. The dye will probably be easier to do at home, since it probably won't show up on your unbleached hair. If you do go the home dying route, I suggest leaving the dye in for a long time. I generally dye my hair, put on a shower cap or something, and go to sleep - wash it out in the morning. It can help not to use shampoo every time you shower as well. I've been doing this for the past four years or so, and the results have been pretty consistently decent the whole time.
  • I dyed my darkish blonde hair blue once. It looked absolutely wonderful for about a week, then it turned all moldy and snotty, and I was sad. Since I'd used permanent dye, and I wasn't willing to dye my hair really dark, I had to have my hair stripped, and it cost me a pretty penny. You're lucky, though, because if you don't like the results after a while, you can return your hair to its natural brown. Just keep in mind, as others have said, that blue is a really high maintenance color. That said, if you like the results when you're done could you please post pictures?
  • Hee, sure. This is exciting. Probably won't happen for a couple weeks tho--it's my post midterm goal.
