Personally, I think the issue is the stereotype of the binging fat person. Yes, many fat people do overeat, but not necessarily all in one sitting. Most of the fat people I know (including myself) don't sit down to buckets of fried chicken or whole pizzas. It's grazing that does them in along with bad food choices. A donut here, a value meal there, a bowl of ice cream - it all adds up over the course of the day. But it's "funnier" to portray a fat slob chowing down on a side of beef, I guess.

Any Upper Midwest US contingent in the making?

In "Au Revoir To Foie Gras?"

I think you make a very interesting and compelling argument, Mord. I'm not really invested in the foie gras issue, but I have occasionally wondered why they are attacking such a small industry when there are so many bigger players in the animal cruelty game. I don't feel like letting the majority make my moral decisions based on how much it can get away with. So true, about so many things.

I suspect that the thing about American men expecting sex if you invite them into your dwelling isn't entirely untrue. Well, no, not entirely untrue. How do you think I met my fiance? But the point I wanted to make about the booklet (and perhaps failed to do) is that it was written by a corporation for its female employees. So they paid someone to write it, and they pay someone to hand it out. Why can't I have that job?

What, no Jersey Devil? Pshaw.

In "Curious, George: Cultural misconceptions"

I have a British colleague at work who's in the US for a 3 year assignment at "headquarters." When she first got here, Human Resources gave her a booklet about living in the US. Apparently, this booklet warns the foreign female visitor against inviting an American man into her home, because he will then expect sex from her.

In "LA Meetup?"

I'm back home now...yea, no shoutouts or anything, I know. It was My First Meetup(TM), I didn't know what I was doing... There was some lovely Monkey singing. Only a smidge, though.

Yes it is...my feet are killing me but I will perservere for cocktails and karaoke.

I'll be there!

I'm staying at a Day's Inn in Mid-Wilshire (I think it is - 457 S Mariposa). I won't have a car...we're cabbing it to the LACC (and everywhere else).

It's not a nerd convention, dammit! I'll have you know that my boyfriend is the envy of all his friends. "Your girlfriend games? Wow, you're a lucky guy!" Anyhow...I'm busy Thursday night for sure, but I could probably do something Wednesday or Friday night.

In "Curious George: Small laptops"

I just got a 12" iBook a few months ago and I love it. It needed another stick of RAM, but other than that it's been great. Small, light, doesn't feel like I have to baby it. On the cons side, the keyboard isn't the greatest (a bit loud). If I were buying today, though, I'd wait for more MacBook Pro models to be released.

In "Free Starbucks Coffee for Canadians today. "

My local (Murrikan) Starbucks had a sign saying you could get free coffee...so I don't think it's just Canada...

In "Etymologic"

Wow, 7 out of 10...surprising! And no, I don't know the origin of "Amazon"...

In "Los Angeles meetup, anyone?"

Another meetup for cabingirl!!! You would do that for me? Yay!

oh darn, why can't it be two weeks later when I'll be in town for E3?

Well, it does taste pretty good, Medusa, so that's not really why I pointed it out. My point is that it's not "in good taste", so to speak. I mean, c'mon - forming tootsie rolls into fake cat turds for a dessert?

her family found it necessary to serve lutefisk My employer finds it necessary to serve lutefisk at the annual Christmas buffet. Gross. What's worse? A number of my co-workers actually critique the stuff and claim it's not good enough. I don't think anyone mentioned kimchi...which I find totally foul but some people seem to like it.

verbminx - you mean like olive loaf? Yuck. I once worked for a company that supplied Kraft foods...word around the campfire was, stuff like Velveeta and Cheese Whiz are actually grey before they add the fake yellow cheese coloring. Thus, I avoid pasteurized cheese foods. But here's something I've seen at potlucks, etc. that I've always considered to be really questionable on the taste scale - Kitty Litter Cake.

So...SmartFilter now blocks MoFi. At my work, anyhow. It's classified as "Profanity".
