Ukai - photographs of traditional cormorant fishing Ukai, or cormorant fishing, is a traditional method of river fishing that has been practiced in Japan for some 1300 years. This method involves fishermen using cormorant birds on leashes to catch sweetfish (such as the Ayu). Nowadays, there are only a few people authorized to perform ukai, and it is protected under the Imperial Household Agency. Positions are usually inherited and passed on within each family. Abortion foes shun Democrats' proposal to reduce pregnancies: "Referring to Reid and Clinton, Tony Perkins of the conservative Family Research Council said, 'Their idea of reducing unintended pregnancies is more sex education and distribution of contraceptives. ... That's not the solution, that's part of the problem. If they want to start promoting abstinence, fine — but they won't.'" Here's one woman proposing a Lysistrata response.

Useful, green urban technology or over-hyped greenwash? This Kitchen-based composter offers a clean, efficient method of composting your kitchen waste. Those of us who already compost using traditional methods, including those who do so inside, may be slightly sceptical of the green benefits of this new device.
Revolved (.torrent). For those of us already tired with those three Kleptones albums (the Detroit to JA mashup, the Queen mashup and the Flaming Lips mashup) I recommend CCC's Revolved album, which combines the Beatles' Revolver with a bunch of other crap. A fun listen, but in my mind not much more than a novelty next to A Night at the Hip-Hopera or Revolver for that matter. They mess with the guitar on She Said, She Said way too much - the highlight of the original album for me.

U.S. bankruptcy reform now on Senate floor. Pushed by the credit card industry, a formidable bankruptcy reform package (S.256) has made it out of committee and is widely expected to pass. While indeed it will crack down on the deadbeats, the reform will also make things considerably more difficult for those snowed in by medical debt and layoffs, many who will be in limbo unable to qualify for Ch 7 but unable to afford a Ch 13. Tenants will also lose protection when they file. More info [PDF].
