Subjugation by James Galloway is a free, unpublished, and entrancing science fiction novel. The Faey are relatively mild as conquering alien overlords go. Within the first couple of paragraphs they peacefully take over the earth and turn it into a farming colony. Unfortunately the human residents are seen as little more than useful serfs to pull in the harvest.

From the same author there is also the Kael Chronicles, a high fantasy epic (of about 8 novels) with a highly detailed and diverse world. [more inside]

Armed America This isn't a book about guns. It's a book about people.

Whether it's 39% or 50% of Americans, it's still an awful lot of people. I started wondering just who they were, what they looked like, and how they lived.
. . . I realized that I could probably photograph a hundred people in two months, but it wasn't a number of people that was important, it was their stories -- a cowboy in Texas, a survivalist in Montana, a deer hunter in Pennsylvania, a sheriff in Georgia, a soldier in Idaho.... What I really needed, I realized, was to get moving, to drive across the country and find America somewhere between here and there.

This week in January marks not one, not two, but all three disasters that have occurred in the near half-century of America's manned spaceflight program. In fact, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire that killed Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chafee. Yesterday was the 21st anniversary of the Challenger explosion, a day which I remember very vividly. Finally, Thursday will be the 4th anniversary of the re-entry accident which destroyed the shuttle Columbia -- an incident that seems to have slipped much of the public attention that the Challenger accident received, but has probably had more effect on NASA's manned flights than either of the other ones. 50 Fun Facts About Credit Cards Okay, let's face it "facts" are never fun and "credit cards" are only fun half of the time. So how can this be fun? I dunno, it just is.
Ever notice all your credit cards are of uniform shape and size? Their dimensions are governed by the ISO 7810 standard, an international standard for identification cards. Banking cards, as well as driver’s licenses and retail cards, follow ID-1 (passports follow ID-3). If your card has a smart chip, it follows ISO 7816, and if it has RFID, it follows ISO 14443.

Bill Moyers Speaks on Media Conglomerates' Threat to Democracy "The lobby representing the broadcast, cable, and newspapers industries was extremely powerful, with an iron grip on lawmakers and regulators alike. Both parties bowed to their will when the Republican Congress passed and President Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

That monstrous assault on democracy, with malignant consequences for journalism, was nothing but a welfare giveaway to the largest, richest, and most powerful media conglomerations in the world. Curious George: Charging for freelance writing? I do occasional work as a music critic and interviewer for a few street press mags and papers in Australia. I've been asked to put together a company profile for some small time promoters, but I'm not sure how much I should be charging.

I've written a press release for them in the past and woefully underquoted them ($30AUD) for the amount of time and headache it took. They ended up giving me $30 plus tickets to a concert, and bus fare for myself and my partner to attend. All up that would have cost them about $230-250.

Can anyone offer some practical advice on what a standard charge would be in this situation? My friend has suggested charging them $300 but this sounds a bit pushy to me.

Also, it's my first post, eek.

Middle School Girls Gone Wild They writhe and strut, shake their bottoms, splay their legs, thrust their chests out and in and out again. Some straddle empty chairs, like lap dancers without laps. They don’t smile much. Their faces are locked from grim exertion, from all that leaping up and lying down without poles to hold onto. “Don’t stop don’t stop,” sings Janet Jackson, all whispery. “Jerk it like you’re making it choke. ...Ohh. I’m so stimulated. Feel so X-rated.” The girls spend a lot of time lying on the floor. They are in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

I can say little more here than "Cool." [more inside]
