From the Pigeons Viewpoint: After a ten-year study, scientists conclude pigeons navigate by using landmarks such as highways and railroads. (It has been known for some time that pigeons use magnetic and celestial patterns to find their way}.
  • It was probably part of this story, but I heard an interview on the World Service yesterday where someone described pigeons descending into an Underground station, boarding a train, and getting off several stops later. It was said that they probably connected the various stimuli associated with boarding, riding, and leaving a train with access to food sources. (But then, don't we all?)
