From this high midtown hall... First published in The New Yorker in 1952, E.B. White's famous Christmas message is one of many he wrote while on the staff of the magazine between 1925 and 1976. Enjoy, and to all a good morrow.

Amid the beatitudes lurks a discreetly blown raspberry at the McCarthy blacklistings of suspected Communist sympathizers-- in a time when any raspberry blown at HUAC was thoroughly inspected for redness. Respect to E.B.

  • Very nice, Pallas. I'd never read this one, and I passed it on to a bunch of friends.
  • Yes, I like this one, too -- thanks, Pallas Athene.
  • Merry Christmas to intellectuals and other despised minorities! Indeed.
