Celebrate the Holocaust!! "A Carnival float with a pile of model dead bodies commemorating the Holocaust is causing unease before the lavish parades in Rio de Janeiro this weekend."
  • Viradouro's parade theme is "Shockers" and it includes floats depicting the shock of birth, the shock of horror and the shock of cold. Damn. I don't even want to imagine the design of those other three floats.
  • I can picture the third and it's not work-safe.
  • I'd been in the pool! Anyway, this is fucked up. Move along.
  • The Samba Schools often call out important social issues. Usually must of them are about "Save the rain forest, save indigenous people etc." It's NOT that big a deal (to me at least) that it's a story told in song and dance. Viradouro usually has great floats and a great school. I'll be watching it on Sunday.
  • I dunno. I think dancing girls and drums might make it all ok.
  • To me, it sort of illustrates the triumph of new life over death, and the will of the human spirit to go on and enjoy life despite great tragedy. But I can see where everybody wouldn't feel that way.
  • At first, I was sorta creeped out by the idea, but thinking about it, it's just another way of keeping us aware of history, which is what we want, right? In a way that's strange to us, sure, but when in Rio... Tell you what. You guys all chip in for my hotel and airfare, and I'll let you know how it is on the ground.
  • Strange? Hell, we've got giant museums to our national religion: the Holocaust. And we call this strange?
  • Whose national religion is the Holocaust?
  • Update on the Float: Rio Carnival float depicting Holocaust banned - Boing Boing I can't believe how quickly they get fed intel.
  • South Yemen's.
  • Can you explain more, orococo?
