Sir Edmund Hillary has died.

  • Sir Edmnund Hillary was still alive?
  • Quite a guy. I've enjoyed his camping equipment for years.
  • He was a Kiwi. Imagine the headline: "Hillary Dead". Some double takes, I think.
  • To be honest, I thought he'd been dead for years.
  • Every time I hear it on the news I start tearing up. He was such an amazing man. #2 and I were incredibly fortunate to meet him and hear him speak four years ago, and he was funny, friendly, self-effacing. His family have been offered a state funeral, he is (well, was) the only living kiwi on our banknotes, and he deserves all the tributes he's going to receive. .
  • Bye, Ed. Side note: The Ed part of my handle is after him. He was notable for his "ordinariness", so I'd recommend anyone who only knows him for his relationship with a mountain, read some more. Here's a short history.
