I saw this ad on TV last night. Moving and effective? Sure. But should kids be seeing this, without warning? In a world where we cannot let a little one see the naked human form, how is it okay to let them see horrifying pain and disfigurement? Bad dreams, anyone?
  • OK... THAT was disturbing. It's bad enough without the closeup of her face, really necessary, people? Reminds me of those NY Anti smoking ads that come on while I'm getting ready for work. (and yes, smoking). Though those have -1000% less shock value. That ad is definitely R rated. What show was the ad on RTD? and what time did this air?
  • that was totally excessive. bad attention for a problem does the issue a disservice. this ad will not help the problem it is trying to address, it will turn people off. oh, and it was fuckin' disgusting and gratuitous.
  • Stay in bed. With the covers pulled up over your head. Cowering in fear. Otherwise, you know, life might get you. That's what I get out of that.
  • God forbid children see the unholy act of sex. Why, it might encourage 'em to take their knickers off and start pokin' each other!! Whereas this lovely ad will teach 'em scare 'em shitless. But it won't teach 'em that watching pain is bad--why, lookie-louism is A-OK! Pull over honey, I want to take pictures of that accident! Stay in bed. With the covers pulled up over your head. Cowering in fear. Otherwise, you know, life the terrierists might get you. There, fixed that for you. Does anybody besides me think that ours is an era in which we need to be afraid of everything? I remember hopping on a horse and going riding. I'd mention I was heading out in the desert, or up the hill, and would be back around X:OO time, but Mr. B. didn't panic if I was an hour or so late. Now friends, and even strangers, continually nag me to wear a helmet, don't ride alone, take my cell phone--the latest is that I should buy a kevlar vest. Mr. B agrees that a helmet and a sane horse might be a good idea, but knows how important it was/is to me to have alone time.
  • alone time? so you can conspire against us?
  • jesus!! what is that trying to warn me against? I already avoid cooking. jesus!!
  • I saw an ad last night which is apparently too disgusting even for youtube. It says that smoking can cause gangrene, shows a man on an operating table with a very disgustingly realistic gangrenous foot, and the doctor sawing it off. I had to look away twice. There should at least be a warning on these things. Someone did write about it, so I know I didn't dream it. Too gross for the internets even?
  • ...I turned my music off just in time for the screaming =(( That was completely unecessary!
  • I went and watched them all. The retail one is by far the most disturbing.
  • Too real for tv, definitely. These ads should be shown in workplaces, however, as part of the safety program. People easily become complacent about safety procedures, and this is just the sort of thing to shock them out of it. People tend to be a lot more careful after one of their coworkers has an "accident" (a couple years ago, a young man lost his arm in a press where I work, and there were no injuries for a long time after that). The scenarios in these ads are probable enough to be as effective as witnessing a real accident at work. But no way should these be shown on tv, they are far too disturbing.
  • I saw that gangrene ad too, Lara. I had to look away. Y'know, it's one thing to have graphic content in a TV show. For starters, the network flashes the rating on the screen so you know what to expect. And most people watching the show know what to expect or they wouldn't tune in to begin with. If they let their kids watch, they can prepare them for it. But this is really catching unsuspecting people unawares.
  • Jesus.
  • In a world where we cannot let a little one see the naked human form, how is it okay to let them see horrifying pain and disfigurement? For goodness sake, this is a 'safety at work' type 'informational video'. "A world where we cannot let a little one see the naked form" is far, far away for other reasons."
  • So is the ad in the OP shown on regular broadcast TV, or not?
