...I can report that the possibility of Conrad being acquitted is regarded there as marginally less likely than Elvis turning up as a courtroom usher.

Last month, he started libel proceedings against his recent biographer, Tom Bower, for representing him as "psychiatrically maladjusted, unrelievedly odious, in fact evil and devoid of any redeeming or even mitigating qualities". Bower is defending the claims. ... Black's answer to his excoriation by Breeden was a libel suit, claiming that the 500-page report had turned him into "a social leper" and "a loathsome laughing stock". He has a point. ... Unfortunately for Black, he'll be meeting an attorney at the top of his game. • I'm really looking forward to this, but because of this arrangement, the entertainment value of the trial has been greatly reduced. Perhaps he'll have all this pent-up bombast for the courthouse steps... I have to admit though, after years of having heard about what a pompous blowhard the man is, all these tales of defamation lawsuits, selling stolen exams at private school for a grand a pop, and all that entertaining gossip from Frank about 'Lord Tubby', I had never really been exposed to much of the man himself, until I saw him on Paitkin's Agenda. He came across as entirely genteel and reasonable, however fundamentally and entirely wrong, and incapable of recognizing that.
  • Media whore My two fears are that the traveling circus will attract so much attention, we won't be able to focus on the serious issues, and that in the middle of the news storm this dog-and-goat cock-up will engender, BushCo will sneak another stinkbomb past us.
  • Boy, that Jeff Randall (whoever that is) sure knows overheated prose!
