James Brown has left the building. (PS Merry Christmas to all the monkeys.)
  • . (I wish I knew what that meant.)
  • Papa's got a brand new bag.
  • .
  • It ain't funky now.
  • Too hot in the hot tub.
  • Can we hit it and quit?
  • grover96, I haven't been able to get that song out of my head all night.
  • .
  • . damn- my group stayed at the same hotel as JB's band in sept- although I didn't see him, I talked to his musical director who said that he was still going as strong as ever- I never dreamed he would pass so quickly
  • death + wishing of merry christmas = monkeyfilter post
  • .
  • . A passing of another one of the greats.
  • . "Yes, it's Christmas in Heaven, and, heaven, heaven with you."
  • I saw him in his Living in America period, and although it wasn't epochal (and he played some truly awful organ noodlings and drums), when it was on it was damned funky.
  • .
  • Total chaos, man it’s resurrected don’t be mislead, just cause the newsman said
  • You will be missed, Godfather. Jump back and kiss yourself.
  • . For once, he didn't throw the cape off and keep on going... Godspeed, Soul Brother Number One.
  • I think that society's treatment of celebrities indicates just how trivial society considers domestic violence to be. Celebrities who beat (or shoot at) their spouses get some negative press for a short period of time, but then everything is okay. There is apparently some expiration date on the harm done by domestic violence. Now, go try to protest a war or call someone a nigger, and we will see just how long people's memories can be.
  • Neat mini-essay on JB and what makes teh funk teh funkay. Musicologically sound.
  • That's just creepy. Then the big cane yanks him off the stage, right?
  • Creepy? It's awesome! And depending on the heat in the place, it could be real funky now. Sorry.
  • pilgrim wrote: "death + wishing of merry christmas = monkeyfilter post" Hey, there have been worse reasons to FPP. Gerald Ford got his post, too. But surlyboi didn't have the decency to wish anyone a happy holidays to ease the pain of our loss. :)
  • We can appreciate the music without admiring the man fortunately.
  • Thank god for that, kamus, or I could never listen to Thriller again. It is sometimes hard to separate the music from the music maker. (I couldn't actually buy Thriller, though. That's one dude who I will NOT give money to. James Brown, I would buy an album.)
  • That is what I am talking about. That is what I think is interesting. Michael Jackson was never convicted of a crime. James Brown was convicted. Domestic violence cases are not serious enough to hold a grudge. Child molestation allegations are. He shot at his wife, didn't he? So if he is a good shot, then we don't ever buy his albums again? If he is a bad shot, then we do? As for the idea that we can honor the music and not the man, I completely agree. But the music didn't die last week. The man did. The music lives on.
  • He shot at his wife, didn't he? So if he is a good shot, then we don't ever buy his albums again? bernockle, the governments of the cities of the red night are sympathetic to your views. Now please wear this glass as a hat and close your eyes for a second.
  • Oh, forget about child molestation charges, bernockle. I mean, odds are SOMETHING WEIRD went on even if he never actually touched anyone. But, even without that, I still don't want to give money to the guy who sold the rights to the Beatles music. Add on top of that my extreme unwillingness to help him afford the life of seclusion and extreme plastic surgery he has chosen for himself, giving himself the ability to deny reality to the point that he claims he has never actually had plastic surgery and that his light skin is a natural phenomenon. I don't need weird feelings about he-maybe-touched-a-Culkin to make me not want to give him any cash. His freakish monstrosity of a face is enough by itself.
  • Taken by Clay Enos...
  • OK, I never thought I'd be saying this, but James Brown looks creepier dead than he did alive. Now THAT'S an accomplishment.
  • And yet if just one of us could be as funky and on-the-one. (Quidnunc only counts when he's actually in this dimension.) (Thanks for the link, Wolof, good stuff that.) Thanks for the LP's, JB. And for being sho-nuff-funky now. Sometimes the egomanaical assholes are also The Best In The World at something. I'm just glad we got some of it on tape. 'Cause not only don't you have to explain James Brown, you can't. Unh! Goot gawd. .
  • Dan Gulley Jr. was charged with assault in the shooting of David James Brooks Jr., police said. Officers said the men were at a friend's home on Monday when, according to witnesses, the argument over the height of the late "Godfather of Soul" escalated, with Gulley, 70, shooting Brooks, 62, twice in the abdomen. That's messed up.
  • *smashes glass, breaks out Emergency Hotpants to restore the Funk*
  • Right down there in the heart of ancestral Goetter country (since we beached in N America, anyway). Please, please, please, airdrop us some emergency funk.
  • heh
  • Brown's body to be buried [Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home] checked on Brown on Tuesday, opening the gold casket to view the body. "I do that constantly," Reid said. "That's the only way I can actually check him ... go in, open the casket and close it. And he's fine."
