Bay Area Meetup! It took a visit from #1, a couple of SoCal monkeys, and a bunch of MeFites to drag you from your hiding places last time. I have faith that we can do it again without resorting to such extreme measures.

If you're feeling shy, there's a MeFi meetup we could crash at Zeitgeist on Thursday the 18th. But if that doesn't work or if you guys want a MoFi only party, please suggest alternatives!

  • i don't think we wanna hang out with those guys.... monkey power! monkey power!!! what sort of meetup do you propose? does it have to be bar oriented? how about meeting for a picnic or something on a warm weekend afternoon in a large park?
  • We can all meet up at my house. I have a koi pond.
  • I dont mind doing a me/mofi meet, but I cannot do the 18th. I dont care where as long as no one minds my flask of bourbon...
  • So long as it doesn't conflict w/Burning Man (8/29-9/5), pretty much whenever and wherever is fine with me.
  • Now that I'm in LA, I'd be up for driving to SF for a meetup. I start a new job the following Monday, so I wouldn't be able to do it earlier than Wednesday or later than Friday. Not that that should inhibit anyone's plans... if a later meetup date works best for everyone, awesome.
  • I'm up for bananigans - I say we go for a MoFi shindig at yentruoc's place! But really, I'm good for whatever/wherever except for the afternoon of 8/20. Up meet we shall!
  • I have to say the Mefites at the last MoFi/Mefi meetup were awesome, and I'd recommend a night on the town with them any time. Especially if you want Dashiv to take your photo. :) But aside from that I'll be over here, seething as always.
  • I'm pretty much in, regardless of when and where. Unless I already have plans. I'd do the MeFi meet-up, but would prefer a MoFi meet-up. I also thank Cali for taking the lead on this!
  • In a revolting turn of events, I've got a volunteer gig on Saturday the 20th. *sigh*
  • I second the idea of going somewhere besides a bar. How about Sunday afternoon Dim Sum? Thursdays aren't so good for me
  • How 'bout dim sum followed by a bar?
  • Space Kitty: Jinx! For a second there I swore I was being mocked but realized I hadn't mentioned my own legally mandated community service volunteer gig. Sounds like folks are up for crashing the MeFite meetup, but I say we embrace the power of "and" and throw a bash ourselves. Does this make Cali BashBashi? So far we have votes for: 1. Party at yentruoc's! (for the koi polloi) 2. Crashing the MeFites 3. Dim Sum 4. Dim Sum and a bar 5. A Picnic on a warm weekend afternoon* We have the following restrictions: 1. Not during Burning Man (8/29-9/5) 2. Not on community service volunteer Saturday (8/20) 3. Any place Medusa can tote her flask o' bourbon 4. No earlier than Wednesday, no later than Friday (of next week?) The question is: Who has the fish? Seriously, this seems to suggest next Friday for those of us who wish to get together independently of the MeFi meetup. What you say? Meetup twice for great justice!
  • * - warm weekend afternoon? In San Francisco?
  • Ooga booga's right. A warm weekend afternoon means waiting until October, and I'm busy that month.
  • Zeitgeist is bad for any get together at any time of day on any day of the year. They don't allow people to set up signs or advertise their get-together, so it's difficult to organize people, and the back yard is generally crowded to the rafters, making it difficult to stake out a space.
  • myopia reigns! not all bay area monkeys live in SF ya know. :) Tilden park in berkeley is lovely, or we could pick a beach somewhere up near stinson or bolinas... so many beautiful places nearby. we're not run-of-the-mill folks-- let's do something fun and out-of-the-ordinary...
  • Go to that stretch of nude beach by Lands End. Be sure to take pictures!
  • For yet another option, I'm having a party at my house on Sep. 10 (Saturday). Y'all are welcome if you are around. It will be mostly sciencey-types, but might be fun despite that. And a disclaimer: I live in Redwood City, up in the hills, so it will be warm, but not as convenient (i.e. no easy public transport from SF). Anyone who wants to go, shoot me an email, and I'll forward the evite.
  • E.E.Q. - I realized that as I hit post, but damn the torpedos in the service of a joke!
  • I'm back in town and definitely up for a meetup. Thursdays are bad for me, weekends are definitely better. Please no Stinson Beach, though, that stretch of Highway 1 is puke-tastic. If the final destination is not transit-friendly, I can offer carpoolage.
  • What about Halfmoon Bay on highway 1? Pretty, warm in summer. A little far away for most, though. Or the SF Zoo? /remote suggesting
  • Hmm. I don't relish the thought of a drive to SF by myself, and since the obvious candidate for the role of "driving partner" can't go, I may not be able to find the inner strength to drive 5 hours for a meetup. Plus, I really should prepare for the aforementioned new gig. I have been meaning to get up to the Bay all summer, and have had to repeatedly postpone that trip. I'm gonna shoot for a weekend in the fall, and if folks are willing to hang out at a later date I'd love to meet y'all.
  • How about the last weekend in September? That way you can choose between the How Berkeley Can You Be? parade and festival (with a parade of ArtCars, including the Monkeys' favorite Banana Bike) and the Folsom Street Fair (where "Banana Bike" likely has an entirely different meaning).
  • Hmmm, sounds like we need to narrow down the options. My vote would be for getting together sometime next weekend, either Friday night or Sunday afternoon sound like they'd work. There's no reason we couldn't do this again in late September but I'd hate to wait that long. It also sounds like some people would rather not hang out in bars, which implies talking to strangers without the benefit of social lubricants or soft lighting. I'll just make sure to get a seat near Medusa, we can create our own soft focus. Seriously though, a daytime thing would be fun. How about a vote on Friday night vs. Sunday afternoon?
  • The semester at my college starts on the 22nd, so I'd be tied down for at least some of the week at that point. And until around that point, we're down to one car here, so I can't take off in it and leave everyone else here stranded until I happen to wander back south. Why does my life insist on being badly timed for MoFi meetups?
  • Cali makes excellent points about social lubricants and soft lighting. How about meeting someplace like Frjtz? It's not a full-on "bar", yet not as staid as, say, a pizza parlor. (cough, cough.) The menu is not large but it's all very tasty. The drawbacks: it's not particularly convenient to BART, parking in Hayes Valley can be a PITA and it's a bit small. So if someone can think of someplace similar to Frjtz but without the drawbacks, I'm all ears. Oh, and we can do this say, next weekend, and still do late September.
  • You guys have a blast, take a frillion pictures, and I'll see you at the late September meetup. Jealous!
  • I like beer.
  • OK, I think it's on for September. I'll probably fly up Friday evening to go clubbing that night, hang out with friends Saturday during the day and do some sort of MoFi-centric activity Saturday night if folks are available, hit the street fair for a few hours on Sunday and fly back to LA that evening. All this is contingent on getting a cheap flight and hotel, of course, but since I've wanted to head up there for a while I think it could be made to work. Rad.
  • I like ambrosia's idea. Laguna and Hayes is maybe a 5 minute walk from BART.
  • Count this as a vote for next Sunday afternoon (8/21) since I just got word from an old friend that he's coming into town and would like to get together with me next Friday night.
  • Okay, that makes one vote. I added it to the wiki page. Anyone else?
  • Hey guys... can I come? I haven't posted much in ages, but I lurk!
  • w00t! Thanks for setting up the wiki page, Cali. It turns out now that my friend can't make Friday so I'm game for either option now. ~Azmeer
  • Okay, Daniel's been added, the more the merrier! I sent out an email to everybody who responded and sounded like they could make it, so you should have a link to this thread and to the wiki.
  • Friday works better for me. Have we settled on a venue?
  • Friday seems to work for everyone, at least among those who have responded. Shall we say 6:00 at Frjtz?
  • Oooh, I think I can make that time!
  • We should probably shoot for a table in the backyard garden area, as the inside is very narrow and might hard to get everyone around a table. They do have heaters, but you might want to dress for sitting outside just in case. I'll do my best to get there as close to 6pm as I can- I'll be the redhead in the monkey suit, er business suit "business casual" getup.
  • Hmmph. I guess I was late checking my email/responding to the Wiki. Friday doesn't look good for me, but I'll see if I can make it work. If not, I expect one Hell of a shout out! How late do you you think you'll be there?
  • This business casual, ambrosia? ;)
  • I will probably be there a little later, probably closer to seven since work is down on the peninsula. Is anyone going to be crashing the MeFi get-together tomorrow evening anyway?
  • I will. Bendy's a friend, I don't want to miss her party.
  • Cali, I'll be there on Friday. And of course, I'll crash on the MeFites!
  • I'll be there as close to 6 as I can.
  • Ook! I might be at the MeFi meetup tonight. Tomorrow is a definite, though!
  • I don't know how long I can stay but I will definitely stop by and say hello to all you awesome internet people...
  • Fot those who couldn't make it last night, we had a blast! Here are some photos from the meetup. Hope to see more monkeys tonight!
  • I'm running a little late, see you all soon!
  • I, Mrs. Zanshin, and the Heir Apparent are at home wishing we were at Frjtz. Well, the Heir Apparent actually is splashing in the tub preparing for bed, and the Missus and I are chilling some New Belgium Loft Ales for later tonight. Here's to the Bay Monkeys! Have fun tonight!
  • Whee! It was great to see everybody! I think this is my first time posting after too much to drink, but oh well. We must do this again spoon soon. It was great to meet ooga_booga, camilo, daniel and HawthorneWingo, and to see Cali and yentruoc again. Hopefully we can do it again soon with some LA monkeys in attendance...ooga_booga had the camera, so you will have to get the incriminating evidence from him.
  • I hope he doesn't post any of the naked pictures....
  • Arrr! It was great meeting all youse folks. I've uploaded the photos here. I'm keeping the naked ones for myself.
  • Oh, you lovely attractive intelligent sweet-smelling wise-beyond-your-years ethically-minded politically-sophisticated morally-upright people who gave me a shout-out! I shall put you all in my will. Such nice photos! So THAT'S what you crazy peeps look like!
  • Yay! My first shoutout that I didn't have to beg for! (Or did I? I don't remember.) Thanks! Someday I'll meet you guys ... I'm long overdue for a visit to SF.
  • That was great, we'll have to do dinner again some time.
  • So you had a buck buck bucket of chicken? And 'ray for shout outs.
  • I plant a kiss upon HawthorneWingo's bare cheek (the only nude part of the photos, alas), in a manly and comradely way of course, in thanks for the shoutout! Remember monkeys, such dubious honours could be yours too for just the time it takes to scribble my name and click a shutter!
  • Thanks for the shout-out. Delighted to see all ye happy California monkeys! (A contrast to the wretchedness of poor squidranch.) Astonished to see a picture of Hawthorne Wingo who amazingly looks much as I'd imagined him to, though his expression is perhaps a trifle less mischievous. ;]
  • o pox on these pointy brackets!
  • Ok, I've tried to add the party to the Wiki page, but my wiki-fu is weak. How do you add an article to the list instead of above it anyway?
  • *takes off clothes, rolls around in big pile of shoutouts*
  • I'm so there in September it's stupid.
  • I can fix it, yentruoc. You just invent a link (for example, in your user page) and then edit it.
  • Thanks tracicle.
  • Clearly I'll have to annoy HawthorneWingo more in the future, damnit. How about this, then: Don't you people have *any* effing idea how many bays there are on this planet? I'm sure I live within 2 hours of 50 reasonable-sized ones. Bay Area meetup, indeed. Ptoo.
  • Right. But we live in The Bay Area.
  • I second the dinner and further meetuppage suggestions as I am always up for more monkey business. It really was great to see Cali again (and so soon!) and likewise to meet funky monkeys yentruoc, ambrosia, HawthorneWingo, Daniel, and Camilo. Looking forward to partying with yentruoc's goldfish, too.
  • fish tick sucks!
  • It was a raucous, loud, fun and delicious meeting. And Page is down the hill. Dinner! Yes, definitely! Meeting monkeys is definitely a favorite activity.
  • Wow, look at all the beautiful Monkies! (And I don't just say that because I got a shoutout, though I do thank you all for it.)
  • Thanks for the shoutout! Family stuff sent me to the midwest this past weekend--hopefully I can make it up there for the September meetup.
  • You all have such a good time. I need to find a MoFite near me for meetups. /jealous Bananas to to give ooga_booga for wearing his MoFi shirt to the MeFi meetup and making mathowie jealous.
  • Yeah, it was really nice to put faces to names. Good meeting you all.
  • Cute little manzano bananas to all the monkeys by the bay The Bay. I will gladly take some of the frjtz fries in exchange (assuming you're all out of burritos).
