T-shirt designs!
Firstly, apologies to all monkeys for taking so long to get this up. I'll post inline images to all the designs received thus far, and anyone with other designs can email them to me or post/send me a link. Once it seems that all designs are in for viewing, we'll set up voting to give everyone a fair chance.
FedoraUndershirt, I liked where you were going with your sketches but there was no specific design, so I didn't link to yours. And there was another on flickr of an orangutan and a full moon, but I need the original. Email in profile for those with designs you'd like me to post. All designs will follow in comments.
-
Images link to original.

-
Awesome!
-
-
That's it for now; send me more!
-
Wow. So many great ideas, I can't wait to vote. Even if it doesn't get picked for MoFi, I would love to have the Turkmenbashi design made into a shirt.
-
The brown one with the banana + thingy plug is good because it looks so 70s but when you get up close, its not.
-
Wow. Images in a thread? That's possible now? Or is that just a bashi perk?
-
Bashi can do anything. We, alas, must not post inline imagery. Lest tubgirl & goatse rue the day.
-
Didn't Beeza have one in the old thread, too? While I'm writing, er, you've posted the blurry version of my second go - this is the tidied-up one. Not that I'm being a prima donna or anything... *flounces off in a huff*
-
One day when I'm feeling a) generous and b) not lazy, I'll open up inline imaging for the huddled masses. Till then, just eat your cake. (Edit: I think you're right, Plegmund. I'll hunt it down. And I've redirected your link.)
-
Ok. This is what I want for Christmas. I want this on a mug. I want this on the back of a T or polo shirt with this above the left breast. I want a poster of this, autographed and framed, to put up between my Che and Goethe posters. I want all the variations of the Velvet Underground album covers to be covers for the monkeyfilter CD anthology. I'll get a tat of this one if SideDish will get this one.
-
Did I forget anybody?
-
And beeza's, which I had ready but forgot to add.
-
Damn, Plegmund, that is, to me, the epitome of Monkeyfilter graphicnetude. That's the one I want.
-
Socks.
-
I want the Turkmenbashi one, and I don't care who I have to bribe, threaten, or kneecap to get it. Please? Pretty please with a MoneyJane on top?
-
beeza's design makes me hot, despite the lack of an "fi" ligature. </type geek>
-
I'd like a t-shirt of the main page Monkeyfilter logo, printed on a beige shirt. Simple, classic, elegant.
-
Count the MoFi logo in the list, although Pleg's done a good remake of it too.
-
tracicle: Understood. Please don't wait up for me. The only reason mine isn't done is I haven't really been taking it that seriously since I like so many of the other ones already up. Is there a better resolution version of the original logo? Without the little red and white dots?
-
just give me until the first maybe I can find my tuppin' pencils
-
Use image ranch, copy the url that it gives you, post it in the message and voila! No dragging down the monkey server.
-
i'm liking the ones that say "the internets". it makes me happy as a little girl. the internets. ha!
-
This page does not want to load on dial-up! :(
-
And I think we need a design where a sock appears on the front with the URL, and "You Sick Fuck" is written across the back.
-
I'm gonna have to say the electric banana is the design that, were I art director, I would choose. I like the sock monkey too. Of my VU remixes, I think the one with Andy's banana, pixelated, is the best; however, I should like a chance to even the weight of the black "pixels" out somewhat to be more in keeping with the spirit of Warhol's original.
-
MonkeyFilter: Pretty please with a moneyjane on top?
-
Like both the Victorian monkey and the Turkmenbashi design very much.
-
I like the electric banana and pixelated banana A best.
-
I love the plug-in banana and the Andy Warhol one, but why is it: monk- ey filter ? Am I missing something?
-
I'm digging the electrical banana.
-
1) monkeyfilter logo 2) sock puppet 3) turkmenbashi 4) elec banana will we really be limited to just one? did someone say coffee mugs too?
-
i'm all for the plug-in banana, though the sock monkey rates a second place. maybe it's the appeal of something other than a white shirt?
-
My wife likes them all.
-
I really want a t-shirt with petebest's tagline on the back.
-
Magic marker may be employed...
-
I really don't know how we're going to work it. As you can see by how long it took me just to get this up, I'm not the person to arrange printing the shirts. Whoever does have the time and energy may be able to get multiple designs produced, in which case we can get a consensus on which are most popular. If it's cheaper/easier to only get one, we're in trouble. Personally, I'm fond of the plug-in 'nana and Mike Whybark's pixellated bananas, although the cockpunch one, if tidied up, has great appeal.
-
I too like the plug in nana, put me on the list for one, if there is a list..
-
Did somebody say electrical banana? I think that's a USB plug, making it a Universal Serial Banana. I vote for that one, but request larger print on "monkeyfilter.com". Nobody wants to have strangers squinting to read your chest. (Well, maybe somebody...)
-
Plug-in banana ! The sock-monkey or the current logo on the site are nice too. I'm not liking the other Velvet Underground designs.
-
I am fond of the a) plug in banana b) the original logo c) the banana ones, though I don't understand why "monkey" is broken the way it is
-
I like the plug in bannana too, although (just to make things MORE difficult) I must insisit that the plug be changed to a three prong. As I'm sure we all know from experience, it is very important to keep our banannas properly grounded.
-
Also - I like small text on t-shirts, because I am subtle that way. But yes, there is an organisational problem. What is the next step. People have said that cafe press has quality issues. Other printers would presumably want a large run of one design. And I believe it is an ethernet cable? So it's a wired banana.
-
I votes me one o' them cleaned up Plegmund logofilter dealies. Or space kitty bits. But no one's done one o' them. ^^HINT^^
-
I wants me a plug-in banana.
-
Mebbee take Plegmund's MoFi logo and replace the red flower at the bottom with the USB banana?
-
Plug-in banana is my vote.
-
The problem with the Velvet Underground design & variations, is that that is a copyright trademark & etc., so unless the thing is done very limited numbers, you'll get a cease & desist from Verve records or whoever owns it. Sorry to be a downer, but I just thought I'd mention that, brilliant though the idea is.
-
Quit being so smart, Nostril.
-
I think the pixelated Velvet Underground bananas can probably get past any copyright issues through being considered legitimate satire. Or pastiche, if we so prefer. Doesn't mean that the copyright owners wouldn't try, but still. Plus, me likee the pixelated bananas. Especially the first one. So there.
-
It's really 'the Internets' that sell me on it though. Nice.
-
ok, trying to find a place where we could conceivably have these screenprinted crashed my browser. on the second attempt, I found these folks. they print on american apparel t shirts (sweatshop free) and there's a 12 piece minimum on the shirt style (but you can have different sizes). this means we could do whichever shirts have at least 12 folks willing to pony up the cash. the basic american apparel t is $6 wholesale. printing involves a variety of fees based on the number of colors, etc. if we can get 24 to go for one print style, the price is halved. there are places that do non-screenprinted stuff (where you can have more colors cheaply), but that stuff is sometimes kind of weird. I think we should consider what we're willing to pay, and how good a design can look with two or less colors (can the plugged banana/other designs be made as 2 color?).
-
I love the USBanana and a brown shirt would make me want it even more. I'd prefer if we went for the best printing possible - I'm much more into having a shirt I'd be proud to wear than saving a few bucks.
-
The way that USB banana lounges half-undressed is so seductive I may have to make it my first choice. But I like the others too.
-
what about shipping?
-
I vote for the original logo, although the sock monkey makes me smile. And I want a coffee mug, dammit.
-
I likes the universal serial banana; I am too lazy to PS the banana, what does the green sticker read?
-
Shipping... well, maybe wherever we get it from would handle that. or, some lucky monkey will receive a big box of shirts and have to resist wallowing in them (or wallow discretely). said monkey pops shirts into tyvek bags and makes a trip to the P.O. This would probably be the same monkey who collected the orders and money, so as to easily finance the shipping. I'm guessing that this brave monkey probably deserves a free shirt for all this effort.
-
If we didn't have to worry about copyright, I'd love a logolike . Of course, some alternative typefaces might be nice.
-
Take Two: If we didn't have to worry about copyright, I'd love a logo like this. Of course, some alternative typefaces might be nice.
-
I would like every comment in this thread printed on the back of the shirt. That would be cool.
-
pricing details from abovelinked printer: say we go with a 2 color design. it's $120 to set everything up, and $9.50 per shirt. if 24 people opt in, that's $14.50 per shirt (plus shipping). three color makes it a little rich for my taste: $230 to set up, and $10.50 per shirt. assuming 24 people again, this works out to nearly $20.50 per shirt (before shipping). the more the merrier, clearly.
-
CustomInk.com ate my browser, but it gave a quote of $11.34 for each shirt (with all of them shipped free to one place). I used one of the warhol bananas on a white american apparel t shirt as the example (because it had a white background).
-
patita it doesn't appear you can do designs with more than one color with those people.
-
regarding the broken type on the VU remixes: I wanted to echo the linebreaks on the edition of the VU album I was working from (I believe it says "the Velvet Underground and Nico"). To get three lines, I broke the monkey. No big deal. Alas, for I could not match either of the typefaces, but on reflection, perhaps that's just fine. Regarding andy's nanner vs. others: I suspect the pixelated version is sufficiently distinct to duck the evil copyright police, and so are the versions which employ a different random banana (which is drawn, naturally, from a random photo googled via image search).
-
Being conscientious monkeys, may I suggest No Sweat Apparel. They have competitive prices on custom screening and guilt free merchandise. I love the Velvet Underground Nanners and the Masthead logo. Want. And if this actually is a go can we get extended sizes for ample monkeys?
-
ding ding ding ding ding ding ding bananaplug! win win win win win win win bananaplug! /sillyfilter
-
Compromise plug!
-
THAT'S IT!!!! YES!! WOOHOO!!!!
-
I've got several of the American Apparel shirts, through various organizations (a conference I helped run, a Pearl Jam concert, etc). I like them because they are no sweat shop and because they're really good quality. And sooooooft.
-
What's wrong with Cafe Press? T-shirts, mugs, thongs, you name it. Zero setup fee, no minimums, they ship anywhere...it sounds ideal for our purposes.
-
it sounds ideal for our purposes. They use an iron-on transfer thing. Silkscreening is better looking and vastly more durable.
-
This is a list of products and their base PPU.
-
You're right, Wolof. So they probably also use the decal-looking thing for mugs, which sucks, because they wash or scratch off in no time. But the license-plate frame....
-
Heres a slight revision to my design, and also a more detailed view: MOFI TEE 2(156 K image). The back panel needs a bit or refining, and criticism is always appreciated... I'll work on getting the colors down to a silk-screen friendly number (either 4 or 6 pulls depending on the pricing my fellow monkey sleuths are currently investigating...).
-
oh, chriss! it's got flying monkeys, banners, pluggable nanars and all!
-
Your flying monkeys are good, chriss, but I have to admit that I wouldn't want a t-shirt with them. It's too busy - I like t-shirts with only ever one panel, and that a simple iconic rather than busy or wordy one. If we keep it simple, it will please the most people. (Or at least me :)
-
Funny... I enjoy Chriss' design for it's simplicity.
-
I've got some more to put up tomorrow morning. I'd do it tonight but I just got back from seeing Garden State and falling in love with Natalie Portman. And that other dude totally looks like Keifer Sutherland! Great movie. Simple, fairly predictable but great. Awesome soundtrack.
-
pixelated 'nana plug in 'nana...
-
Whatever happens with the t-shirt, I'm certainly enjoying the thread and the whole exercise. Perhaps we can make this the Mofi shirt 2005, and do it again next year? The 2005 shirt would become a collectable item of memorabilia, selling at auction for vast amounts. ('Yes, sir, it is a genuine 2005, but I'm afraid it's one of pete best's - there are hundreds of those in circulation')
-
Holy Shit! Flying Fucking Monkeys!! AAAAAiiiiiiiiigggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!! /runs
-
The flying monkeys have completely won me over.
-
The flying monkeys are what we call ourselves at my place of employment. . . seeing as how we do evil deeds for a wicked witch and all. . .unlike here - which makes me love love love chriss' shirts even MORE! I so would buy one.
-
i'll wear anything ya'll decide. although those flying monkeys kick major T-shirt ass...
-
/AOL I'll buy one, regardless of what or who is on it.
-
Gah! So many cool designs. The VU banana (esp the pixelated versions), the sock monkey. I'd love just the flying monkeys. The lectric nana is lovely, but in a dildoesque sort of way. Just a thought: Pleggy's monocle monkey would also look great in a sepia tone or black-and-white old movie style, which would omit the need for multiple silkscreen colors.
-
Zanshin - I'm sorry, I meant that I liked the USB banana, but banana and monkeys was too much for me. I also like the monkeys on their own, though I do have an aversion to noticible text on a T-shirt. (I'm sort of private, and while an image is just an image, text inspires people to ask what your t-shirt is about, like advisors or something, whether you would like to tell them or not.)
-
I vote for the USB Banana with no modification to the size of the lettering. If another is selected, can we have a dark and light shirt option? i don't like light/white t-shirts.
-
responses to various things: customink.com does multiple ink colors, as the quote I got was for a 2-color shirt (black and yellow). front and back printing can double the cost of printing because it means preparing 2x the number of screens--we may want to stick with one-sided. chriss, can you develop a version of the shirt graphic with no background color? customink will let you upload photoshop files and save designs, so we could upload one for folks to check out.
-
They're all so good! I'm voting for the electric banana image though, and second everyone who wants a Turkmenbashi shirt too.
-
I like chriss' version, as well as the original banana plug. Either would be great.
-
I want chris' shirt. I want I want I want.
-
I vote for Bananaplug, with or without the flying monkeys. And to avoid any irregularities, I'm going to vote absentee.
-
Patita, I've got vector .eps files for both designs which I can make print ready in two shakes of a lamb's tale (should the monkeys wish to have them). Personally, I'm not hugely thrilled with my revision--the flying cherub-W of Oz monkeys holding the back panel banner seem a bit off--but if that's what folks want, I'm fine with it. If the original design is chosen instead, I'll make a print-ready pdf available on my site to those who just have to have their flying monkey action. If we go another route altogether (which is totally cool by me), I'll still make all the designs available for them that wants 'em...
-
While checking to see if a Remains of the Day lunchbox might actually be had for under $20, I learned that it's mentioned in a movie quote: “Kids don’t like eating at school, but if they have a Remains of the Day lunchbox they’re a lot happier.” -Corky St. Clair, Waiting for Guffman
-
oops, wrong thread.
-
Maybe we should just find a place that will print small numbers of all the designs.
-
-
More! Woohoo! These are great especially the third one. I think I need a screensaver which brings up a sequence of randomly-selected Mofi designs.
-
1. Plagmund's Victorian monkey 2. Bashi-shirt 3. Magritte monkey 4. Orignal logo or Plegmund's modification thereof To me, the banana design only indicates computer-using person. Wot I, as a monkey, require is a monkeyfilter shirt with a monkey on it. And Bashi shirts. /stubborn, opinionated, persistent -- all the charms, me
-
1. Monkey in front of moon 2. Turkmenbashi 3. Victorian Monkey 4. Monkey with the hands in front 5. Logo comprimise 6. Weird hand motion tee The USB bannana is alittle too Urban Outfitters for my tastes.
-
FYI: #4 is doing the MoFi gang sign that the LA monkeys made up, and #6 is the sign for "banana". Actually, I'd love a hi-res version of the last for my desktop. /hint
-
I have to say, I like creative monkeys. I like them all.
-
could we have bigger pictures so if worse comes to worse those of us that want the less popular pictures could just try our luck with Cafepress?
-
I am liking designs. I am also liking that some dumb gang signs that we did while plastered made it on to one of the designs. I am going to refrain from voting for a good long time, or at least until monkeybashi closes the entry for designs, as we just keep getting cool stuff coming in.
-
btw- I think the gang signals are reversed, at least if you are reading them as an observer, rather than the person "throwing" them.
-
I was going to set a deadline for designs, but we're already probably too close to Christmas to get them done before then anyway. Plus I always take longer than I say I will to get anything done. But let's say all designs have to be in by the end of next week, then voting will be enabled, somehow.
-
How about we all let me do the choosing? *crickets* I'll take that as a no
-
What islander wanted. Sooooooooooo good. Chriss' design in close second.
-
custom ink has a 6 piece minimum. so if a design gets at least 6 votes, it can be printed (so long as monkeys can agree on a shirt style/color). if not, then the other designs can go via cafe press? does this make sense? it looks like voting may start tomorrow.
-
If it is first past the post voting, it may be that no design goes to a majority or large minority. Is it technologically feasible to do ordered voting? eg. 1rst (10 pts), 2nd (9pts), 3rd (8pts)... 11th (0pts)
-
I just made number three my wallpaper. Do I still need to vote?
-
Anything happening with this? Shall we vote now?
-
mwhybark was looking into a printing company local to him that would probably wllow us to do a couple of the designs. So it might be a good idea for everyone to pick their top three favourites, and somehow we work out which ones are the overall favourites from that. In other words, squiddy, yes.
-
Well then. My firstest choice is the sock monkey. My secondest choice is Chriss' MOFI TEE 2. My thirdest is this one.
-
Tracy, do you have a paypal account set up? Might be an easy way to get you the cash for the shirts.
-
I won't be handling the money side, or the printing. It all depends on which printer we go with, and in theory we can just send them the designs and monkeys can order their t-shirts direct. (I hope.) If we need to set a specific number for printing, I'm not sure how we'll work it. So far mwhybark is the only one who's actively looking into t-shirt printers, for which I thank him.
-
If it comes to needing to exchange moneys somehow, I'd rather use something other than paypal. What options are there? Have we had a Curious George on that topic before? It seems familiar.
-
There was this one . Has PayPal now added the antipodes to their list? When I tried to do the ipod purchase, I could get/send Euros, Canadian $$, US $$ and Japanese yen, as I recall. I wound up wire-transferring the money to NZ so that rodgerd could actually buy the thing. There were other web sites that offered to transfer funds, but we got warnings from MoFites in the know that they couldn't be relied on. That may have changed, however.
-
i vote bananaplug #1 in second place bananaplug #2
-
wah! i am t3h st00pidZ0rz
-
shirt now! shirt now!
-
This and in second place, this. And this one only if the shirt's not white.
-
I guessing that this should be reposted to the front page so we can get the attention of other MoFites that have forgotton this thread.
-
I still like the Monketfilter logo. May I vote for it three times? huh? May I, please?
-
I like Monkets. Monkets is good.
-
*rude noises for ol' blue* I still like the Monke Y filter logo. No matter how one chooses to mispell it.
-
bananaplug (do doo be-do-do) bananaplug (do do-do do) bananaplug (do doo be-do-do, be-do-do, be-do-do, be-do-do-doodle do do do-doo do!) banana NA NAAAH NAAAH na-na-na PLUGGETY BE BOOP bah... bap... bananaplug
-
Suggest waiting until after the holidays to post this to the front page, since some monkeys amy be a bit distracted now.
-
Banana plug, sock monkey, and this. Let it be one of those (if not all of them). Please? Pretty please with the quidnunc kid on top (or bottom)?
-
Hey!
-
distctractde? stdisracted? rastradicted? Who? Me? I really like that third link, too. PY. All of 'em are cool. I want. I want.
-
I don't think this is getting the persusal level that we need for a real vote. Shall I re-post on the front page?
-
Probably a good idea.
-
It's the USB Banana for me, I think. Great stuff. (And a Turkmenbashi, naturally, but honour forbids me from voting for my own design.)
-
Computer surfing monkey looking at pictures of kittens. Times 3, please.
-
Banana-plug!
-
I'll get in touch with mwhybark and see how he went with the Seattle-based printers. Meanwhile, the two that patita found look promising. Let's start collating votes and decide from there. Question: I'm having trouble navigating through Custom Ink's website to work out the setup costs and overall t-shirt costs (I think my brain is still on holiday because it shouldn't be that hard). There's a 1-800 number there if someone US-based wanted to get those numbers after we decide on designs. T-shirt.org's basic tees in almost any colour are between US$2-4 without printing, if 12 people buy them. A four-colour design on one side costs US$4 per shirt if 12 people buy them. So we're looking at US$6-8 per shirt, not including setup costs. Now, the best way I can think of to do it is pick one design to get started on (maybe the bananaplug since there's probably 12 people interested in it), find some willing soul in the US who is willing to collect checks/cheques from monkeys that will all incllude a small portion of the setup cost. That way that willling soul can send one large payment that includes the setup costs and the purchase price of each shirt, and hopefully the t-shirt company will take responsibility for shipping shirts individually, since that's their job. The tricky part I see here is that the t-shirt.org people say shipping costs vary depending on location. Argh. Am I making this more complicated than it should be?
-
My vote is for the USB Banana. Of course I'm user #856, so if we are weighting the votes at 1/ID then it won't count for much...but I will buy a shirt.
-
cafepress.com might be one way to go. They charge a flat fee for each unit (no setup costs) and sell your T-Shirt to individuals directly. They take care of all manufacturing, sales and shipping. It sounds a little more expensive, but no risk for the organizer... I am in no way associated with this company.
-
1. Original logo 2. Original logo 3. USBanana and dark blue or black shirts?
-
am I the only one for whom all the images refuse to load? I have heard bad things about the service of CafePress, aka "sure I'll pay $18 for a t-shirt with your crappy band's logo on it!"
-
Someone further up this thread said the Cafepress ones are only iron-on transfers.
-
Regarding the bananaplug, who would buy one in black or brown? My fabulous bro-in-law has an account with a guy here in Christchurch and we can do a test run there. Details will follow.
-
Doh!
-
I would buy a brown bananaplug shirt. Or a sockmonkey shirt. Or original logo. Or gang sign or Magritte monkey. I know that's not much help in choosing one, but I would buy any of the above. Gimme.
-
Except ... I am very drunk, and I',m literally bleedingly profusely, ike the second image in Tracicle's last post ... um god help me aikdsji
-
oihasjdnwqikeugrfwc vc
-
What token meme just said.
-
You know the banana in front of the gentleman, er, monkey gets my vote. And I feel the Turkmenbashi shirt needs to be made as well.
-
Is he alive? Bleeding profusely from the finger can lead to, uh...red fingers. I'd hate for that to happen.
-
Banana Plug One on front. Banana Plug Two on back is nice. On a brown shirt like that.' I WANT ONE.
-
i want one that says "Monkeyfilter team Number One in Relief Aid to Tsunami areas!'
-
America: fuck yeah! Just saw Team America. Woot.
-
Bananaplug (design #1) on the front, Turkmenbashi (design #3) on the back.
-
Late vote: bananaplug. (simple design)
-
brown bananaplug, thanks. it is sooo very nice. kudos. simple. effective. deliciously ironically self-referencing without being too up-front about it. if it were a wine it would be a rich but often urecognized vintage, easily overlooked by the masses but sweet nectar of the gods to those in the know. and barring that, i did like the monk ey filter "the internets" one with the banana. less so the one with the pixely banana. my 2 cents.
-
Yeah, I'd forgotten about the "Monkey Underground" version. It's peeyump.
-
This one, please (monkey watching kitties).
-
Who did the monkey and the moon one? Could you please send me a larger version than the one up here so I can take it to cafepress? Also, Flashboy, is there some way I can snag a bigger turkmenbashi?
-
as per Cali: Gimme.
-
*bump*
-
*bumps now that people are actually conscious"
-
*continues to bump
-
FedoraUndershirt, ok I e-mailed a larger monkey and the moon to you. Let me know if you don't get it.
-
Thanks a lot bratcat :)
-
You are welcome, FedoraUndershirt :)
-
I'm just lost with this whole thing. I want a shirt, please, and where do I send my nickles?
-
People voted and everyone else is getting a USB Bannana shirt. I think they're still taking orders over here. Now send squidranch money.
