MeFiSoCalWenCom '04 - LA Mefi Meetup is on for this Saturday.
  • kimberly please carry warm mofi greetings from monkeys on the opposite coast! ook ook.
  • I say we ambush 'em! I mean, really, we'll never have an opportunity like this again.
  • Kimberly is our official Monkey Ambassador. Make sure you do a fine job of representing the monkeys.
  • If I provide a list of posters I'd like cock punched, would you oblige?
  • This probably wouldn't be a good time to have those 335 drinks then, is it? As far as cock-punching goes, any excuse to even say "cock-punch" is a happy thing.
  • I was thinking more along the lines of swing from trees, hang on one arm and scratch yourself. But drinking 335 beers would certainly make us look impressive. I, also, like the word "cock-punch". *says it aloud*
  • Cock punch was courtesy of The Onion back when it was funny. (Actually it may date from more recently when it was unfunny.) But it is about the best word ever.
  • cock punch sounds like something you'd drink at an orgy.
  • Maybe you'd drink it at an orgy, but I think I'd pass.
  • You just had to go and lower the tone, didn't you SideDish?
  • Suggested drink for the name Cock-punch: Jaggermeister and Dr. Pepper Reason: People double over and groan immediately after drinking.
  • MonkeyFilter: We Like Cock Punch
  • *shudders* Dear gods of the Googling world, let no harm come of this vile cockpunch tale!
  • I'm sure I'll be recieving spam within the week advertising teenage sluts drinking cock punch and loving it.
  • Oh dear lord. I completely missed the obvious... I mean I was thinking, well of course people will embibe at orgies, and I just... I just ... *hides under table, sobbing quietly* ...ooh! Cheetos!
  • Kimberly: This probably wouldn't be a good time to have those 335 drinks then, is it? If you're going with jim_t you'll only have to drink 167 and a half drinks each, I suppose. (I had to use google to do that division for me - I really am embarrassed)
  • It also reminds me of the best dating advice my friend Sean ever gave me: "Ask her out. If she says no, then punch her in the cunt." She said yes, by the way. And then dumped me ten hours later.
  • Etiquette question (especially for those of you who are dual MeFi/Mofi people): There is a meetup planned for my home city where Mr. Haughey will be in attendance. It's been my impression that he isn't so keen on non-Mefi people crashing the gates. Example. So should I go anyway and introduce myself? Should I go and sit in the corner and take pictures on the sly? Or should I bag it and stay home? Advice, questions, and general thoughts welcomed. cockpunch
  • I say crash! You might even score a membership out of it, if you're lucky. I reckon we're the mefites who prefer to play outside, anyway.
  • It's not Mr. Haughey's party, it's Wendell's party. Ask Wendell. Wendell knows all.
  • I believe he's talking about a Portland, OR meet, not Wendell's LA meetup.
  • Ahhh. Even better. Show up outside the Portland meet with a cardboard sign that says "Will work for Metafilter membership"....
  • It's my party and I'll spry if I want to. Monkeys are welcome (although I rejected a Chinatown location because of too much of a Year of the Monkey connection), and I'm going to be wearing a tempered steel athletic supporter to protect against cock punching (it will, however be equipped with a quick-release switch...) On the other hand, I may arrange for the host location to offer a blended Chicken Broth cocktail just to keep the running jokes running. Speaking of running jokes, anybody know where I can print a couple dozen napkins with "shout out" messages cheap? Or some place that sells tiny plastic ponies - or badgers? (Los Angeles area only)
  • badger badger badger badger badger badger badger badger
  • Wuhwuh??? A PDX meet-up?!
  • Not to impinge or anything, but some MeFite find out what happened to the opening up? IIRC, mathowie posted a MeTaFPP himself in the last week of Nov. about opening up the following Monday. It's been 6-7 weeks since. It's not really the answer as much as the suspense. Has he changed his mind? Put it on backburner? Trying to get it done soon? ......etc
  • He then said it would be done before the new year. He had some project come up at work and had to put it off, and I guess said project has held him up even more.
  • Possible. But a non-speculative answer would be more informative.
  • I could care less. We got monkeys.
  • YEAH we do! And also, MonkeyFilter: A non-speculative answer would be more informative.
  • Matt's proposal of method for MeFi admittance was pedantic and annoying. Peer reviewed FPPs? C'mon! I'm glad he didn't carried it out because the level of ostentatiousness in posts would have raised to unprecedented levels. No matter how fair & balanced the judges would had been. Don't misintepret me. I love Mefi and I consider Matt to be a good person, But it's current members all joined freely in the first place and without particular intentions to show off. If he plans to add new members it must be the same way that the other regadless of the quality of their first FPPs. And 338+ monkeys are no Shakespeare but get close enough!
  • Besides the fact that I could have never joined MeFi that way. Heh. Again, I like it here. You don't care how presumptuous I can get sometimes.
  • fair & balanced Hee!
  • A few months ago I would have leapt at the chance to join MeFi, but now I like MoFi better. I know I've said it before, but it's nicer over here. I like the Monkeys. It feels more egalitarian- there isn't any newcomer-vs-oldtimer dynamic, and since it's a new sandbox all the monkeys are still playing nicely. Besides, we get to make up *our own* in-jokes. The first one that leaps to mind, of course, is Cock Punch. There! I got to say it. FWIW,It strikes me that Matt will have to open membership up again sooner or later, just to bring in some fresh air-otherwise things will start (continue?) getting a bit stale. There's been a fair amount of agitation on MeTa on that point already.
  • Well, in their current states, MeFi and MoFi are different. MoFi's mostly fun links (art, humor, offbeat). It's a work-stress-escape filter, whereas MeFi tends to have loaded discussions on more, how should I put it, not cerebral, but provoking topics. A different atmosphere. What spoils MeFi are the political threads that tend to polarize the discussion along left/right. But, if there's enthusiastic new blood, I think that could change a bit.
  • If it weren't for MoFi, I wouldn't have spent a non-trivial amount of my evening last night cracking cock punch jokes with my boyfriend. That is a beautiful thing.
  • Hmmm. Cracking cock punch jokes.... Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
  • How many original in-jokes we got already? - Cock Punch - Pop Tarts - [banana] - Oop Oop and it's many variants... - Wolof (kidding)
  • What spoils MeFi are the political threads that tend to polarize the discussion along left/right. But, if there's enthusiastic new blood, I think that could change a bit. Not a chance, I'd say. Less than none.
  • We won't know until it opens up. In fact, glancing through, even now, less than 10 out of 50-60 threads in the past 3 days are overtly political. 10's still too high for my taste, but it isn't exactly that bad.
  • Election year, isn't it?
  • Election year, isn't it? Only in one country, I believe... cockpunchcockpunchcockpunchcockpunch
  • In my opinion, it's this kind of thing that spoils MeFi. I like the fact that we are making a concerted effort to play nice and just ignore the posts we don't like. I would really like to get to the place where we can have posts about the family dinner no-no topics and remain reasonable.
  • Hmm. I should have posted to the main thread. Also, cock punch!!
  • release the cock punch of agreement!
  • In regard to Kimberly comment. It's a good thing we don't have a MoFi version of MetaTalk. Although it's has it's gems (the funniest MeTa thread in ages) sometimes. As they put it, it tends to be more about making big issues about small things.
  • With the utmost respect, cock punch.
  • Flashboy - Only in one country, I believe... Good point.
  • Only in one country, I believe... Well, I can't really expect you international high-fliers to have heard much about Australia, but we have elections here too.
  • I got yer Cock Punch right here... And I keep getting the feeling that, after this year's election, America just isn't going to go to the trouble anymore... And nobody told me where to find tiny plastic ponies...
  • GIS for (respectively) cockpunch and cock punch. Truth be told, I'm so comfy here in the lavender that I'm no longer reading Meta much anymore. Not to be snotty, just stating a fact. But I DO miss not being able to contribute and post to AskMe. That's one where the multitude of readers really pays off in spades. Also, mark me as one who would like to see a Mo-Talk. Threads like these are fun chatty diversions and allow us to cockpunch all the live long day. Maybe we can even keep our panties from bunching. You know how to keep your panties from bunching, right? Hint: it involves cockpunching...
  • Forks: I think that the only way to not get your panties in a bunch is not to wear them, METAphorically speaking. It would be really nice if Matt could give us access to AskMe, even if we don't have Metafilter status, but I think that won't happen. And, I don't think that we monkeys have the expertise that we would we would get from with the huge Metafilter community. Maybe we just have to Google and hope for the best?
  • Geeze, I'm sure I tried to fix that excess "we would" thing.
  • Hey, Pat! What if I had an accounting question? And you could answer it? That counts as expertise. I'm sure there are all sorts of people here who know all sorts of stuff.
  • Hi, Wolof! Yes, I could answer many accounting questions, but that's a pretty narrow specialty. And, as wonderful as I think all you monkeys are, three hundred plus of us don't have the range of 17K, even if you reduce that by the Mefiltrians who no longer participate. Certainly, "Curious, George" questions have resulted in some really good advice, but if we're going to rely on monkeys, maybe it would be nice to know what sort of questions we could ask the community. Wolof - your profile makes me believe you've a good range of knowledge, but many members have no such info in theirs. Hard to tell what sort of questions to ask George. I'm currently annoyed by an MSN connection issue, and MSN support has given me 20 conflicting answers on how to solve it, none of which has worked, so far. I would guess that someone in Metafilter could help, but I haven't asked George because it isn't clear to me that anyone other than our overworked Kimberly and Tacicle are into computer arcanum. Also, even if everyone here revealed expertise in the profile, checking out 300 profiles to see if the question I have would elicit any reliable responses would be a bummer - and I'm hesitant to use up front page space with something that will go nowhere or that wouldn't be of general interest. A stupid question like mine would get lost in the noise on AskMe. Don't get me wrong, I love Monkeyfilter and the simians who inhabit it.
  • No question that you're right, Pat, but you can always give it a go without trogging through 300+ profiles! If no answer shows up, well then, nobody knew and no harm done. There's equally the possibility that if nobody knows, someone may know somebody else who does know, which ratchets up the numbers pretty dramatically. Heck, just ask already.
  • Actually, I think the answer to my question is "find another ISP." But, I must say that Tracicle's plea for help from coders did reveal a plethora of experts among us. Not surprising, really, but nice to know.
  • I did think of posting a Curious, George asking the monkeys what kinds of expertise they had, for future Curious, George reference. I'd reckon that, approaching 400 people, all of whom were at least in touch with reality to find MoFi, we've probably got a reasonably fine set of eclectic expertise, worldly wisdom and generalist cleverness. But then again, maybe we're actually all just coders, graphic designers, postgraduate scientists and assorted media types. "Well, I can't really expect you international high-fliers to have heard much about Australia, but we have elections here too"... Sorry, thought you cancelled them after the national trauma of us beating you at rugby. :-) sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry...
  • Best game of rugby I ever watched. Great.
  • I am completely without talent and/or worth. I think the best thing we could do is have an "AskJimLoy" page.
  • Blaise - your selection of an online name makes me sure that you have talent and worth. I have no idea where it came from, but it's spectacular. And, you've contributed a lot to MoFi.
  • Oh, that is a brilliant link. Thanks pete_best!
  • Speaking of, does anyone have the link (my money's on pete_best or homunculus) where the cockpunch reference was born?
  • Never mind. I am such a fucktard.
  • Wow, you cockpunched yourself ;)
  • *monitor soakage ensued*
  • All right, I'll go sit in the corner and wear a funny hat.
  • Flashboy - remember, your only as good as your last game! :P Which gives Monkeybashi, rogerd and any other kiwis bragging rights at the moment. :P *removes ra-ra nationalism hat*
  • Speaking of, does anyone have the link (my money's on pete_best or homunculus) where the cockpunch reference was born? Ah, MCT, pete_best's bonus link (now defunct) led me back here in July '04 to find the thread that started it all...well, the cock-punching part of it anyway. But alas path, if you meant this was my first comment, no. I know I commented before then. I mean, true, at this point I'd been on MoFi for almost a month, but I know I posted a link on MoFi sometime around March or April and so had to have commented on some thread before then. So the search goes on.
  • BearGuy. Sorry but I misread 580 for a 680 for the first comment I found from you (stupid bifocals.) But, if you think you commented earlier, you might want to check out the eeked threads. The first post I found from you was http://monkeyfilter.com/link.php/813 in Feb. 2004. But, on the other hand, it's really nice to have new opinions on old posts, so I hope you don't regret your journey.
  • *yawn* Is it morning yet?
