Breaking News for MeFi Wannabes Matt must've got antsy when the MoFi membership hit 100.
  • Ha!
  • First thought: Woo-hoo! Second thought: Oh, crap, now I have to find more links!
  • Curse you, Monkeyfilter! I will crush you, see you driven before me, and hear the lamentations of your women!
  • I second the "ha!" and the "oh crap". I wonder what's going to happen to our little social experiment.
  • One "t" in mathowie, numbnutz.
  • I wonder what's going to happen to our little social experiment. It's only going to get more experimental, m'dear. Buckle your seat belts.
  • don't you read star wars novels? i'm matt's insane clone.
  • evil twins. been there. done that. deleted acount. HEY, TRACICLE!!!! :::jumps up and down, pointing:::
  • I dunno; I kinda like it here. Fresh as snow. New peoples to learn new things. I just may stick it out.
  • So tracicle is the new mathowie? I hope the power doesn't go to her head.
  • [ seatbelt buckled, helmet donned, music blaring ] Ok. Let's go.
  • *registers account as traccicle*
  • dg, I thought tracicle was doing all the admin business around here, but I've been wrong before... (27.5% of my MeFi posts contain "Homer Moments")
  • I like it here also. It depends if I can find anything to post or not.
  • *puts on big 'hunter's hat', clicks rifle, starts talking like Elmer Fudd* Be vewy vewy qwiet! I'm hunting matthowies...
  • matthowie season! wendell season! matthowie season! wendell season! matthowie season! matthowie season! wendell season! *bang* see? this is kind of crapola is exactly why we closed signups at metafilter. *wink*
  • tracicle's posts are spiffy. Greetings, Monkeyfilter.
  • Eeesh. Now I'm going to have to find a good link to post... Methinks I'll be lurking in MoFi for some time to come.
  • dg, I thought tracicle was doing all the admin business around here, but I've been wrong before... (27.5% of my MeFi posts contain "Homer Moments") You and me both... I wonder if she is working on her Amazon wishlist yet?
  • this is kind of crapola is exactly why we closed signups at metafilter And I signed up in 1999 (some sources say Jan. 2000, but that was when the Real mathowie started keeping track of dates). As for certainsome1 and niccolo, my advice is: Just relax and let the links 'find you'. Of course, I've never followed my own advice, but did I tell you I signed up in 1999? And dg: I'm sure trac (I like to shorten names as a sign of endearment; it's my homage to George W.) would just love to get the Flavor Flav Talking Alarm Clock.
  • If I may be permitted a spell of sentimentality, I find it very moving that wendell, one of the MetaFilter pioneers, should give his blessing - and drive - to this deserving website. MonkeyFilter has accomplished in a few days what the other Filter clones have never been able to attain. And it has changed MetaFilter, by pressing for the reopening of new memberships, much for the better. Congratulations are in order. I just hope, when you all get in, you won't be so ungrateful and/or forgetful to stop posting here, as it has an engaging personality all of its own, imo.
  • wendell, i'm just playing around, and definitely including myself in the "crapola." settle down.
  • a) You know that digital camera everyone's getting Matt? Yeah, I wouldn't know how to work it. b) If you're the real mathowie, how do you spell your real name? And no cheating! c) I don't like to think of myself as admin, more as a "power-enhanced individual". d) New signups? I'm out of posts!!! e) Now that the option is available, I'm going to try to get me a metafilter membership, but I mostly like it here right now. :)
  • So where are the monkeys again?
  • Chiming in a little late, here, but HA!! too! At this point I have no intention of trying to join MeFi, simply because I couldn't even read all of Matt's steps without getting a headache. I have a feeling I wouldn't be accepted after the trial period (or whatever it is), and I'd much rather be where the grass really *is* greener. But that's just me.
  • tracicle: "but I mostly like it here right now. :)" I do too! Tracicle, you are the BOMB.
  • Well, I for one welcome our new monkey overlords (or has someone said that already, and I missed it?)
  • I think you're the first with the overlord line. Wow.
  • I can't believe we didn't think of using MeFi cliche's here. How embarrassment(sic).
  • Hey, Matthowie upthread, read this comment, deregister and pick a new username. There really are so many choices. Same goes for "Mathowie", whoever you are. Just be a sport and do it.
  • I might say the same to the other Miguel, and the other Quonsar. I think that's taking the whole "mefite wannabe" thing a bit too far.
  • *pouts because nobody wanted to impersonate him*
  • JUST for the record, yhbc and tracicle, I'd like to point out that I used the "___ overlord" quote on Day 1 or 2 of MoFi's first incarnation. Of course that site is now no longer available, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Really. "I for one welcome our new kiwi overlords."
  • Aha! I thought that seemed familiar, but then I figured I was just dreaming of the teeming masses all bowed down before me*. * May not technically be true.
  • tracicle: If even Matt Haughey can't post with his usual username, it might be a good idea to nix all the doppelganger accounts. It was funny to start with, but if MonkeyFilter is going places, as it clearly seems to be, surely frivolous identity confusions should be reduced to the absolute mininum.
  • This MeFi you speak of...it vibrates? (I have been lurking for 2 years waiting to say that.)
  • Doh. Dang Italians. I mean..Italics.
  • Miguel, I've spoken to the FalseMiguel and he promises to only use his powers for good. He says you can have the intercap version of your name too, if you want it. He also says that your wife couldn't tell the difference between him and you.
  • Well, we know that neither mathowie nor matthowie are
  • I'll be a-stayin' here, thanks very much!
  • Unless they can link to a comment on Metatalk which directly addresses the identity question - or respond to an e-mail address posted on their MeFi user pages -then I think it's safe to assume they aren't who they purport to be. It's also a bit self-defeating, not only for the real identities here but also for those Mefites who've chipped in because they genuinely back your effort and enjoy Monkeyfilter for what it (already) is, regardless of MeFi. Just my two centavos.
  • I [heart] the false Miguel. I don't think you'll be having any more problems from his bad ass self, though. ;)
  • I hope the membership here doesn't drop as fast as it rose today after MeFi opens up. Although they do like they're doing some sort of tap-dancing contest to get in. Dance 10, Looks 3.
  • The whole false Miguel thing makes me nostalgic for the days when I used to impersonate Larry Ellison over at Slashdot, alternating flatulence and penis jokes with commentary on the sorts of items one can buy for a hundred grand. "#17: about nine pounds of wholesale, minimally cut coke."
  • Sorry that someone had the opportunity to "borrow" your identity, Miguel, and the same goes for Matt. I'll be deleting the erroneous matthowie and mathowie accounts tomorrow morning if they're still there (and I hope they won't be), and if the other miguel rears his not-as-attractive-as-your head (I'm sure), he might be persuaded to renege his good name. (I don't know what happened to my last comment - it looked fine in preview.)
  • You impersonated Larry Ellison on /. Fes? I currently impersonate Wil Wheaton.
  • Reading the above and thinking about it -- I'm not sure that I'll try and get in to MeFi as well. Auditions never were my strong suit. "Um. Hi. My name is Certain Some1 and I'll be doing a piece by Miguel Cardoso. It's something near and dear to me. I hope you like it... [beat] What? Oh, the real Miguel Cardoso, yes. Ahem... 'If I may be permitted a spell of sentimentality, I find it very moving that wendell, one of the MetaFilter pioneers...' What? Oh. Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you." [scene]
  • Oh, and, tracicle? ixnay on talkingtay about the ameracay... you never know if the real mattttthowie is lurking
  • certainsome1, I don't think its a secret anymore.
  • Well, Wil, sometimes it was Larry, and sometimes it was your basic chatroom ingenue. When the Muse rides me, I can only gallop fast and follow the signs from the saddle, you know?
  • Why does Commish always get the best numbers? I mean 123 - I ask you!
  • Cool! * preens *
  • How about lucky 7?
  • I'm back. Anybody miss me? I didn't think so. (Actually, two minutes after I went offline, two posts addressed me personally, so, let's jump in the Wayback machine to six hours ago when the Real Miguel said: If I may be permitted a spell of sentimentality, I find it very moving that wendell, one of the MetaFilter pioneers, should give his blessing - and drive - to this deserving website. Be careful where you're kissing, Migs, I had a burrito for dinner. Seriously (if I am capable of 'seriously'), I like the mood and the spirit of this place, and especially the attitude of the Super Admin/proto-mathowie/Borg Queen/Top Geek/whatever Tracicle. You may avoid some of the flamewar threads that are the bane of MeFi with a few well-placed "lighten ups". But then, they're META, you're MONKEY! One bit of advice: play around with the ability to categorize: links can be News/Reference/Arts/Entertainment: don't be afraid of mis-categorizations, especially on 'borderline' topics, but let them nudge the posters into being clear why they're posting what they're posting. And for-gunny-sacks, change that "internal" category to "MonkeyTalk", but keep it on the front page. And to the Monkey Formerly Known as Matthowie: I know you were just playing around. Settle down? I'm just playing harder than you! I have this in common with my dog; she likes to jump up and lick people's faces when she first meets them, but she's fifty pounds and capable of knocking people over twice that weight. My jumping and licking occurs on-line (this analogy is falling apart fast). I wasn't cool about the "identity borrowing" from MeFi's #1, but I wanted to test you to see where you were taking it, and YOU were cool. I look forward to hearing from you under a more original name. And don't anybody (except Real Miguel) try to kiss up to me; I am totally out of the running for the MeFi Membership Jury. So I'll hang out here and play with the monkeys (but first I have a way-too-serious comment to add to the MeFi "Marriage" thread).
  • By the way, Wendell, did anyone figure out your real name? I was waiting with bated breath, after all, and nothing happened.
  • Wendell's real name is Matt Haughey. I thought everyone knew that.
  • Oh, and I second his comments about tracicle. She's doing a fantastic job.
  • Wendell's real name is Carlos Queveda. Matt's real name is Bill Gates. And languagehat is a sophisticated AI program that gets its input from NPR broadcasts. I think we've got this "identity" thing covered now...
  • WendellFilter!
  • hooray i just registered here with a crazy username.
  • There is something about usernames I wouldn't even begin to know how to pronounce...
  • Something I like, i should say
  • I'm baaaaaaaack.
  • Its been fun taking regular trips to the zoo to check out the latest antics of the denizens....the pompous preening, the ruffled feathers, the poo-flinging at the unlucky outcasts, the sometime hugs and smooches after a particularly rancorous bout of fur pulling....but not enough fun to audition to get in the cage. Groucho had it right! "...begging for their MeFi supper" indeed, meech
  • I think I'm right there with ya stirfry. I'd been waiting, hoping, heck - even scheming for memberships to open. But begging?? I'm not so sure. Of course I may completely change my tune by Monday.
  • "Dance, rummy!" *throws nickels at IgnorantSlut*
  • If I had a nickel for every...
  • I kinda miss Iggy.
  • Good ole IgSlu
  • Shortening her name was difficult. You had a choice of calling her ignorant or a slut. (Yes, I know the origin. It's just that it always sounded a bit strange out of context).
  • Meh. She just liked to complain about us.
  • Say, what happened to the_bone?
  • IgSlu sounds kinda like an igloo...made out of slush- um, nevermind I blame you all
  • *sigh* /so many wonderful people drifted away, to our loss.
  • I've been around pretty much continuously, but haven't been participating due to busy-ness (moved out of my house in May to stay with friends for a month, moved to CA in June, started a new job in August which until recently involved a hideous commute, moved to L.A.'s westside a couple of weeks ago). Plus, Space Kitty's usually logged in to MoFi on the main computer, so I've mostly been reading on her account. Now that we're in an apartment with WiFi, I'll be logged in as myself more frequently. Regardless, I was touched by your query, BearGuy. And it's great to see dxlifer back!
  • squidranch hasn't been here in a while, though he used to be one of the most prolific monkeys. But, maybe he's too busy being successful. And Muffpub is probably too cool for us anymore, at least until he becomes a university junior. So, while I miss them, I don't worry about them. (Especially SideDish.) But there are others, like PatB, whose last visit, I think, was in Dec. 2004. (It would be really nice to get the year of the last visit in the profile.) She had been through a bad experience, but had salvaged her life, living in a small cabin in an isolated area where she felt safe. Her companions were a couple of cats, a toilet that froze up in the winter, and spectacular scenery. She just disappeared. I do hope she's ok. And, there are others, like the amazing PF. He also left us over a year ago, when he moved to the west coast to live with his poetess love. We first heard about her in a Curious George query. He had a blog for a long time, but it's gone now. I wish I knew where he is, and how he's doing.
  • I've had mail from PF. He swears he'll be back some time when conditions permit.
  • PS, path, PatB's last visit was Dec 2005.
  • Right, as usual, Wolof. As far as I can tell, she did make 2 comments in 2005.
  • Similar to the_bone, life has been so busy of late that an anonymous reading of an eye-catching headlines is the best I've mastered. At times I thought we should start an 'old-timer's thread just for exchanging bananas and poo instead of ducking from nuclear blowout from someone making a boo-boo. Silliness seems to be a rare quality anymore and I, for one, miss it very much. It allowed for a more happy conduit of info and opinions, without such hurt feelings and reactions. mhi, for 2006. /Hi y'all I still miss diz
  • Ni! Ni! Icky-icky-icky-ptaaaang!!!
  • In some ways I think all of these threads are old timers threads. The downside is not everyone is in the know about how many articles the sidebar should show and maybe miss out on an older thread on a busy day. Or so I posit for conjecture.
  • I posit for Garage Sales.
  • Well, I only posit for cockpunch, myself. *admires prosaic quality of fish tick's poo.*
  • You just have the sidebar display the last 10000 comments. Guaranteed not to miss a thread that way.
  • It makes monekyfilter run like death, though, if you come back after a few weeks and you've got to wait for a hundred thousand links in the sidabar to load up
  • A few weeks!!! You MUST come here every day!
  • Yeah really, what are you people . . . on dope?!! /Mr._Hand
