They're going all the way... I'm no sports fan, much less a baseball fan, but I am loving the thrill of watching the Boston Red Sox take the odds by the throat and dragging the New York Yankees into Game 7. What election?
  • Poor widdle yankees.
  • you called it jerry. it's midnight, and the yankees suck. go boston. my office mate is a yankees fan; the last student in our lab to graduate was from boston. there will be a snotty gloating email in my office mate's inbox in the morning. :)
  • FUCK YES FUCK YES FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! RED SOX HAVE ALREADY DONE ENOUGH THEY COULD LOSE IT IN 4 AND I'D BE FINE FUCK YES FUCK YES FUCK YES
  • Now if the Astros can just pull one out of their ass tomorrow, all will be well.
  • The Evil Empire has been defeated! Karmic order has been restored, and in a most impressive manner! Anybody who's ever lived in Boston -- hell, in New England -- knows exactly what I mean. Right? Could this mean that a larger karmic adjustment is afoot in the cosmos? Kerry's a Red Sox fan, after all. Boston will be his base on election night. Does the Red Sox victory mean that Kerry will topple the Bushies' own evil empire? Can't a guy hope? He can now! Go Sox!!!
  • oh fuck why am I not in boston now??? WHY AM I IN ASSFUCK PROVIDENCE??? I mean people are honking horns here but in BOSTON???? shit shit I knew this day would come
  • Yankees: Who's your daddy?
  • Can someone explain the "who's your daddy" chant from the NYC crowd?
  • Alex: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/tom_verducci/09/28/pedro.yankees/ Y'all realize that a Kerry/Boston vs Bush/Houston prophetic matchup could be just around the corner?
  • YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In southern CT, horns are honking, and tonight, as for the last two nights, I have heard joyous screaming from houses, perhaps half a mile away echoing into the night. Like the movie Network, but in a happy, amazing way. This is at the very least a tremendous release for those of us that have rooted for the Red Sox all of our lives. Thank you. Thank you, Thank you.
  • Horsemuth: Look for a similar response, nationwide, on the night of November 2nd.
  • W00T
  • Anyone in Boston? Please describe. *leans back, smiles happily*
  • I hope so. I'll vote with my lucky Sox hat on, that's for sure.
  • Absolutely beautiful. Joe Torre was asked in the postgame how he thought Steinbrenner was going to react to the loss. "He'll be disappointed," he said. You don't say.
  • I don't know anything about this Yankees or Sox stuff. All I know is that Johnny Damon is cute as hell, so I'll be rooting for his team, wherever they're from. such pretty, long hair...
  • This is like Manchester United getting beaten, right? Right? It is a good thing, a glorious thing in the world? Guys?
  • The best part about the game was the feeling from the second inning on that the Sox couldn't screw it up this time. They could give up a couple of runs and still recover. As the game went on, the glow got warmer. Allah be praised for six run leads! I gotta admit that the pitching of Pedro Martinez was a low point. Just not low enough to put the outcome in doubt. And I could watch the rerun of A-Rod's interference play all night. In hockey, that would be a major penalty for slashing. Hockey ... now that's a sore subject around my house. Has anyone tackled a topic on the hockey MESS and ideas to salvage a season this year?
  • flashboy - yes, only better, because Man United has never beaten the Blue Jays. (I was 8 - first game ever, at the Ex - I was traumatised. But the Blue Jays haven't been good since the 80s, so now I'm just an anti-Yankees fan.)
  • flashboy: Yes, it's like Man United going down. But it's more than that. It's the RED SOX beating the Yankees. Does Manchester United have an archrival? Did that archrival trade the greatest and most famous soccer player in history to Manchester United back in the 1910s -- and since that trade, has Manchester United won the championship 26 times while the archrival has won zero? And did the archrival not only just defeat Manchester United, but do so in the most dramatic come-from-behind manner in the history of the soccer league? If so, then it's like that.
  • but, yes, a glorious thing in the world.
  • Now, if it were only the Cubs instead of the Astros/Cardinals this upcoming series would be truly amazing! But, in the absence of the Cubbies, Yay Sox! and Go 'Stros! Boo Cardinals, Boo!
  • I've got to tell you, even with the score 10-3 in the ninth with two out I was STILL nervous. Been burned too many times. Oh, so many times. Honestly, though. BOTH of those NL teams scare me. but BRING THEM ON!!
  • Also there are some baseball monkeys making noise in this thread, too.
  • Oh, you guys can all bite me.
  • i'm with bevos. as a die-hard cubs fan, the red sox are my default fave team once the cubbies are outta it. and, of course, the yankees SUCK.
  • *bites babywannasofa* yyyyyyYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! FUCK! YES! HOLY GOD YES!!!!! DOWN with the Yankees! GO MUTHAFUCKIN' SOX!!!! All is right with the world! All is well!! Justice, Truth, and Heart have won out over Glove-slappin, Fat-cat, "Always-win", Lousy-ass-fan-havin', No-fuck-YOU, Daddy-T-shirt-wearin', LOSER YANKEES. BwAAAhhaAAAAaaa!!!! Damn that was sweet. I woke up dancing.
  • and that whole chanting "Who's Your Daddy" while being beaten - badly - in the most historic comeback in the History of Major League Baseball - that was . . . that was exactly what the Yankees represent to many, many people. Ugly, arrogant, and poor LOSERS. SOX WIN THE PENNANT! SOX WIN THE PENNANT!
  • My prediction: it's going to be Bosox against Houston, and Houston will take it. Why? Why, the ex-Cub factor, of course. See how many ex-Cubs are in the postseason And here's the sad truth about the Cubs disease A lifelong Cubs fan, I'm thinking of going anti-Cubs next year. A crazy thought, I know, but I think they might be dragging me down. I don't know who I should root for instead ... the White Sox don't excite me. Cards are close. Braves are on TV a lot. Those are the current top contenders for my affections. If Houston (gets to and) wins the Series, that would really be something.
  • Yeah that'll be a tough call. Houston's _never_ won, and Boston . . well y'know. On the other hand - it's Win/Win. Especially with that part about the Evil Empire being vanquished. In a most excellent manner. In a sense, the actual World Series is just gravy. It's already been won.
  • iguanapolitico, you could root for the Rangers. They're fun, and should be good next year. (Dear God, please give us pitching. Thanks.) Just don't go Braves. Ewwwww, Braves. I'm rooting for a Houston/Boston series. That way, I'm happy no matter who wins.
  • meredithea, I'm not sure I can switch leagues. :) Changing teams is one thing, but entire leagues? (Maybe that's one reason why the White Sox don't excite me. You know, there's that designated hitter thing. 'The hell is up with that!) To somewhat echo Jerry Garcia's original sentiment, I'm not even an American League fan but I've shown no interest in the NL playoffs thus far. It's been the Yankees/Sox series that has won my attention. Great ending; props to the Red Sox for making history.
  • Well to be fair, the Yankees/Sox brought a LOT more history to the series than Cards/Stros. Although Cards have plenty of it. But did you see game 5 of the NLCS? I didn't either until after the 14th inning of ALCS, but what I caught in the interim was an awesome classic NL matchup that had a great inning. They can play some baseball, no doubt.
  • Man, fuck the NL (he says from Detroit). The reason to root for the Cards now is their ex-Cubs, as so adroitly pointed out above.
  • Tavarez is from the Cubs? Oh man, that's it I'm a Stros fan for sure. That guy's batshit nuts.
  • thanks, iguana, my sweetie was just going to sit down and figure up the ex-cub factor. and... not be a cubs fan??? impossible! losing everything at the last minute is the epitome of being a cubs fan. "Do they still play the blues in Chicago When baseball season rolls around When the snow melts away, Do the Cubbies still play In their ivy-covered burial ground..."
  • Please do not foul this thread with talk of the lothesome Cubs.
  • loathesome??? the cubbies? feckless, more like
  • Man, fuck the NL (he says from Detroit). Indeed. Any league that has the temerity to make its pitchers (gasp) actually BAT isn't really worth anybody's time. Pete_best called it: I know, I know, there aren't any baseball teams outside of New England worth paying attention to, and really no other states should be allowed teams at all, but if you haven't been watching the NLCS, you've missed one hell of a series. You'll pay attention when the Cards kick the living shit out of the Sox (for whom I cheered my ass off last night) in the World Series. AGAIN. It'll be STL/BoSox -- the Red Series. You watch. You watch tonight.
  • I'd just like to raise a toast *hic* to Bhaseball . . the ghreatest sports hever. *hic* May the fields be green, the bats . . warmed up . . and the umpire's calls be true. *quaff* /fall_down
  • iguanapolitico: I can see the difficulty of changing leagues, I guess. In my family, we figure you can have one AL team (Rangers) and one NL team. (I try to be a Stros fan, but I'll admit to a more than passing interest in the Cubs. Perhaps this is why I really don't want the Cards to win?) pete_best: party's at your place, yes? I'll bring the nachos!
  • I've been having an argument with a number of friends who say that the Red Sox' victory over the Yankees will be forgotten if the Sox don't win the World Series. I say, "Hogwash!" People still talk about the Bucky Dent homer in 1978, and that took place during the regular season. Of course this will be remembered! What do you folks think?
  • 've been having an argument with a number of friends who say that the Red Sox' victory over the Yankees will be forgotten if the Sox don't win the World Series. I say, "Hogwash!" It's not just that they won the series, it is the way they did it. Yankees fans may WANT to forget it, but no one forgets something HISTORICAL and this was the Yankees committed the biggest collapse in MLB HISTORY. No team has ever started a best-of-seven series by winning their first three and then losing the series. That was epic.
  • ^committing
  • Even more epic than losing 22-0! ;)
  • I'll take Houston I'm covering all bets
  • Please do not foul this thread with talk of the lothesome Cubs. Before this series, my favorite moment of the season was watching Nomar bat into a double-play in his first at-bat as a Cub.
  • Uh oh
  • All you haters know where you can send the love. That's right, bitches. Now we get our third World Series victory against the BoSox.
  • I'm not really a baseball fan, but seeing the Yankees beaten soundly did feel good, perhaps because the dirtiest player in baseball, Alex Rodriguez, had to suck it up after lamely swatting the ball out of the pitcher's glove as he was getting tagged. Then Rodriguez had the temerity to crybaby about it and claim innocence. So, good riddance to the most overpaid (and, my wife wants me to add, ugliest) whiners in the baseball world.
  • What A-rod gets paid is unbelievable bullshit. There is some seriously whacked decision making going on in the sports world. Something that I will never get.....they decide that Pete Rose has to be kicked out, but Daryl Strawberry can keep playing (will, until he couldn't)??? Where is the logic? There are hundreds of examples of bullshit calls going on in sports today. /sorry, off topic rant.
  • Hey hey hey - this is not about why MLB is messed up . . although that would make a good thread . . but right now let's show some love to those NL - whuppin' Cards. Great team, all year long. Gonna be a r0XoRin' Serious . . .
