Ahh, jeez. As a musician who recently seriously slashed my left thumb I thank you for showing me how close I actually came to ending my career. There are some very scary images on that site. I also found some excellent "physio" tips to help me get back on stage faster. Still, hand injuries scare the shit out of me.

My friend once insisted that Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead needed to wear a chainmail gauntlet when playing Creep, because he played the guitar so fast he was in danger of cutting his wrists on the guitar strings.
He was an idiot.
I wore this glove for shucking oysters, once upon a time. The armor protected my hands against trauma from without as a child, but not against trauma from within as an adult. Repetitive strain led to tenosynovitis, which showed me just how much I was a creature of the hand.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to change my lifestyle and so avoid surgery.
Nowadays, I rarely write computer programs professionally, and don't do much wrenching on my truck any more. I eschew flat-wristed pushups in favor of the knuckle variety. The warmup exercises to my tai-ch'i practice help a lot. Avoiding computer games and marathon debugging sessions helps more. When I must geek out, I use a laptop whenever possible.
