Black Ships and Samurai. An online exhibit featuring some 200 Japanese and American graphics depicting the 1853-1854 mission by Commodore Matthew Perry that led to the opening of Japan to the outside world.

  • And if you liked that, you might also be interested in this gorgeous object which is coming up for auction in a few weeks' time -- a Japanese painting of a Portuguese merchant ship, from the early seventeenth century. Estimate? A mere $300,000 - $400,000. *sigh* but at least one can look and admire. More pictures and a fuller description here.
