Gay, anti-Vietnam and pro-choice demonstrations are being removed from video footage of the Washington Mall. There seems to be a trend towards editing history at the moment (see my last post). Here's an older article about rewriting history textbooks to "reflect multicultural values".

The first 2 links are the same.

Ah, that was meant to be this.

It's a neoconservative world. We just live in it.

The NPS might be backing off somewhat on this, but it seems to be part of a broader trend towards "Faith-Based Parks."

There are more links in this MeFi thread.

Thanks, homunculus. That's a better set of links than mine.

Teach me for going on holiday. :)

What with the (re)placement of plaques containing biblical quotes and allowing creationist revisions of the Grand Canyon's history to be sold, and now this video-editing issue, it's like the Bush administration is testing the public to see how close to the line they can step. I see a slippery slope a-coming. There's something odd about using the National Park Service to attempt to reintroduce a faith-based government, but it's probably the most innocuous place to start. I wonder how far it will go before the next elections, and for how much Bush is directly answerable, you know, what with him being on a mission from God and all.

At least they had the decency/sense to back down on the Washington Mall video.

I am guessing that you are an evolution-believing, monkey-worshipping communis. Please confirm, irony is thin gruel.

I am a fan of the colour pink, dayes. I wonder what Lenin would have looked like as a monkey.

Mostly, though, I'm of the firm belief that life in the White House is getting more and more like that Comedy Central sitcom with the Bush lookalike. (That's My Bush?)

it's interesting, i was just at the lincoln memorial yesterday and watched that very video. let me first say, i'm about as left-leaning a liberal as they come. but i tried watching it as a right-wing conservative would. and, yeah, i can see why they're pissed. there's lots of footage of pro-choice, pro-ERA stuff and basically nothing of anti-abortion, anti-gay, etc.

but my boyfriend was wondering, have right-wing groups protested at the memorial as often as lefties? maybe the spirit of the memorial -- equality -- draws more liberal voices.

Speaking of pro-choice vs. anti-abortion, this is a good article:

How Democrats started losing the abortion debate.

Why is it even possible to "debate" abortion any more?

/naïf

Well, it's not a debate. That's what people who enjoy arguing like to call it though, because coming out and saying they like pissing off those who disagree with them hits a little to close to home. Debate, at least to me implies that the other party might change their minds.

See Tracicle, all the dogmatists were sick of hearing that "history is written by the victors" and decided if they could write enough of the history, they'd win.

History is bunk.
