NJ Governor Resigns, Admits to Gay Affair. This is the shortest AP Story I have ever read.
  • Wonder who was going to out him.
  • Any word on why he is resigning from his position? There have been politicians in the past who admitted to extramarital affairs but still stayed in office, one of them wrote a book recently. He could have stayed his term, could he have not?
  • I have a brother who is gay. Does he need to quit his job, too?
  • wow, this bums me out. It would be so great if he didnt resign!! a publicly gay gov standing firm in my home state of nj would make me so proud...of course, I am one of those perverted weirdos who is disappointed in the recinding of the california marriages today...
  • I think it had something to do with the fact that he's married.
  • Yeah, I agree with unusual. If it were just an affair, that would be one thing. If it were just that he's gay, perhaps he could stick it out. But the two put together is probably just too much for Middle America™ to accept.
  • Actually, there are some other things brewing like a sexual harrassment lawsuit from a male staffer and unethical fundraising allegations that were more likely to destroy him. I think this was just a preemptive strike to bow out on his own terms. Evidently, he was very eloquent at his press conference, stating that being gay wasn't the reason he was resigning.
  • Thank you kimdog, your additions were helpful. The fact that he was married wasn't it, it is part of the definition of affair, and NJ is hardly "Middle America," folks there seem about as accepting as anywhere else. But the fundraising allegations and the lawsuit would definately be a snowstorm of too much to handle. Perhaps also his love of his family is part of this? Ducking out early, and admitting it himself places him in the spotlight, and temporarily, and all should blow over quickly, saving his wife the public humility.
  • But the two put together is probably just too much for Middle America
  • scartol -- When and how did you Trademark "Middle America?" How much do you want for it?
  • Is "Middle America" like Middle Earth?
  • Does that make Texas Mordor?
  • Jim McGreevey is resigning for many reasons, only one of them is this most recent lawsuit. His administration has been rife with corruption and scandal. Here is one example of his troubles.
  • among his problems... "Charles Kushner, McGreevey's biggest campaign contributor, who was charged with trying to thwart a federal campaign-finance investigation by luring a grand jury witness -- his own brother-in-law -- into a compromising position with a prostitute and sending video and photos to the man's wife." text of his announcement (via SFGate)
  • i feel unusual: So? Affairs haven't compelled any number of US politicians to resign.
  • In the land Crawford, where the Bushies lie...
  • Affairs haven't compelled any number of US politicians to resign So? Maybe he is an individual and not a composite.
  • berno -- I obtained a TradeMark for the term "Middle America" by applying for its registration at the US Patent and Trademark Office. They have a simple series of forms you must fill out to obtain your ™. (I've previously obtained them for phrases I use regularly in my blog like HalliBush Wars, Inc.™, TimeWaster™, and KerryEd's Last Resort™.) Pursuant to my ownership of the TradeMark, anyone wishing to use the phrase Middle America™ must pay a minimum royalty of US$0.50 per each usage, payable directly to me. Ergo, I expect this amount from you and IgnorantSlut and Fes. (While Fes used it twice, he indicated fair use in the first instance by italicizing the phrase as part of a larger blockquote. He needs therefore to pay only for a single usage.)
  • Oops -- LoopyG also owes me US$0.50.
  • "Middle America™" x infinity + 1 Ha!
  • This seems to be a more in-depth article.
  • This story randomly makes me wish there were a common male equivalent for "mistress." That's all I have to say right now, other than drive-by love for the Mordor bit.
  • How about "catamite"?
  • hee... the OED defines "catamite" as A boy kept for unnatural purposes... like polyester manufacture! *cues intro to Beethoven's Fifth*
  • Outrigger, you are legally obliged to sign over the deed to all property you own.
  • That definition is heinously offensive, PF. Thanks for pointing it out. I shall proceed to do absolutely nothing to change it, of course.
