The OTHER Meetup Calling all West Coast Monkeys!

After derailing poor forks' thread, we're politely moving it over here. So... how many Cali monkeys are there? Anyone with easy access to the Bay Area? Have another West Coast kind of place in mind to have a meet up? First I should ask: is anyone intersted in a meetup?

  • The west coast of what? he asks, facetiously
  • I'm in, as long as I can make it to the when/where/what part. Sometime after August 7 would be better.
  • Alameda in the hizz-ouse flib-floppity-floo
  • Well Portland oregon is on the west coast...
  • SF Zoo! Monkeys! I'll be in New York Aug 6th-9th, so any other time would be good for me, if possible!
  • And I am in So. Cal. LA to be exact. I'd love a meet up down here. How about Musso and Franks for martinis?
  • yes!!! I have been waiting for a cali monkey round up. BAY AREA BAY AREA BAY AREA BAY AREA after all, we have the best weather and I can't afford to travel... I will be gone aug 27ish to sept 3ish (that stoopid burning man art festival thing all the kids are talking about...)
  • Hey Mr. Squidranch, I will buy you a martini if you drive up here... come on, it's only 5 hours.
  • L.A. westsyyyyyyyyde!
  • I'd be down with something much more northern, say around Seattle. But I have the feeling that won't happen, so have fun y'all! Alameda in the hizz-ouse flib-floppity-floo "Oh no, don't call it that!"
  • Oh come on, Weezel/Ramix, it's only a 14/15 hour drive down!
  • hey do they have the Instaweb in California? If so, maybe you could get one of those there web cameras and like have a site up for the meet? MonkeyCam! That might be a little too technical for Cali though. I mean, heck, Reagan came from there.
  • I wanna meet in Los Angeles, Because I live in Los Angeles, Not the one in South Patagonia, But the onbe in South California. (apologies to Mr. Black)
  • another vote for Martini's at Musso & Frank's! whee!
  • I'm up for it. I'd prefer southern Calif. (I'm just outside San Diego) but with a few days' notice I can prob'ly go up north, assuming they still allow my kind up there. Anytime except Burning Man week. Anybody up for a BM meetup? Medusa? Anybody have a clue how to arrange such a thing.
  • hicinbaby, I have some clues how to arrange such things. my email is in my profile, so perhaps instead of hijacking this lovely thread I will say: email me, if you like...we can look into the feasibility of a bm monkey meet & post about it separately later....good?
  • If there's a critical mass enough to have two, why don't we do a NoCal meetup and a SoCal meetup? It seems like there's enough of us to do both. That, or we all descend on Paso Robles for a weekend.
  • I'd be up for a meetup in LA, unfortunately I can't travel too far.
  • Bay area....
  • SoCal is gonna kick NoCal's ass in the rumble of Robles.
  • Oh, yeah, um. Sorry BBF, I'm still expanding my horizons, and sometimes forget that there are other countries out there. ;o) So, I'd never heard of Burning Man before, and looked it up. All I have to say, really, is: Wow. I guess we need to work out some details. First, do we need a coordinator for this thing, or can we manage with MoFi? Second, what month sounds good to everyone? It's looking like quite a few are going to Burning Man; would the week before that be better, or after? September sounds good for weather, at least. Okay, that's enough for now, I think.
  • Judging from the way it seems to run at MeFi somebody just calls out a place and a time then interested parties show up or not. That said, I think it makes sense to try and accomodate the schedules of participants in order to maximize meeting size. September sounds good to me, but my schedule is pretty much always open. What I don't know is how the group recognizes its members once there. A sign? A secret passphrase? Handshake?
  • There's probably enough for two meets, and then we can all come back here and compare notes. And by "compare notes," I mean, "see which group is hotter." September? I could be dead by then! I thought this thing was happening soon!
  • What I don't know is how the group recognizes its members once there. A sign? A secret passphrase? Handshake? I could wear my monkey shirt...
  • september is probably better for burning monkeys than august, cause august is busy w/prep.... I think it would be um..."cute" (ak!) for people to have something like a...banana! or some other monkey paraphranalia [sic?] by which to know each other...
  • like Daniel said...
  • Okay then! How does either Saturday Sept. 11 (not intentional, I promise), or Saturday, Sept. 18 sound? Daniel, you'll just have to be careful until then. Hey, what's tha- WATCH OUT FOR THAT BUS!!!!
  • yes, I am a complete dork
  • Tell you what Dan, I'll buy you two martinis. And Musso martinis are basically double or triples of your average martooni. No driving back to the bay area afterwards. All northern Cali monkeys can crash at my place.
  • I vote for September and southern California as I'll be moving there for some book learnin'. Do any LA monkeys want to give advice on cheap living in the city? Send me an e-mail (the address is in my profile) if you do.
  • Damn, damn damn! /jealous Y'all can consider this meet a practise, since I'll be in the Bay Area mid-end of Jan next year and would like to see some monkeys in their natural habitats. Likewise New York/Philly/Baltimore regions around the 15th of Jan. Book early! Why wait?!
  • I'm okay for an L.A. meetup on 9/11 OR 9/18. Suggested tasteless motto for 9/11 MeetUp: "Crash the Party; Just Don't Use a Plane" I may even try for NoCal too if it's NOT 9/18. (I hope to be busy on the 19th disrupting the Emmys...)
  • We should try for the 11th, then. And, we MUST be available when Monkeybashi is here in January! It'll be a little like meeting God. if life were like the movie Dogma
  • Another Alamedan here. Sign me up, but not for August.
  • How's September, right around the 11th, littlellen?
  • The surlyboi's in the LA hizzy at the moment. Meet me now!
  • Can't we have a midwest monkies? We could rent the community center in Ogden, Iowa.
  • tracicle I imagine we'll be more than happy to roll out the lavender carpet when you're in town. minda25, thank you. I was in Europe for much of this year, and I kept half expecting an SF meetup to occur in my absence and half willing it not to. I lucked out. An SF meetup would be great in my book; a Berkeley one (Triple Rock?) even greater. The SF Zoo sounds like fun, though it's a trek from downtown (and it may be worth waiting til the Great Ape Forest opens . . . ). Regardless: September is good, as is a No. Cal. location.
  • I too vote Bay Area, and I vote zoo! I love zoos. Once when I was a child my mother took me to the zoo and bought me a sno-cone. I couldn't eat it fast enough and it started melting all over my hands!! But then a kindly stranger came up and gave me some cotton candy and everything was better! By the way, if there is a bay area meetup, I live about 2 hours south of SF, any South CA monkeys give a rideshare for the last little bit of their mystic journey?
  • I have an idea, let's us So. Cal primates meet up down here and you No. Cal kiddies meet up there. Problem solved.
  • I, SuperMonkeyNugget, am proud to announce that I will attend a Bay Area meetup of fellow monkeys, as long as it occurs after normal zoo hours. I will shave special parts of my body for the occasion. I may appear to have two tails. Do not be deceived. That is all.
  • This is so exciting! I do wish we could all get together... perhaps we can do a bit of long range planning, and have a bigger U.S. West Coast meetup. In the meantime, why don't all the monkeys who want to do the Bay Area meetup drop me an e-mail, that way we can keep track, give directions to those who need them, etc. Also, if we find that there are LOTS of monkeys coming, we can arrange to meet up somewhere besides Burgermeister. It's a great place, but it's not *that* big. Loopy, that's awesome of you!! I hope we have some takers!
  • I too would love to get a super west coast monkey meetup, and it seems the natural occasion for that would be When MonkeyBashi is here in January. Though this is far off, a saturday would probably be best for Monkey's from out of town to reach the bay area and not be dead tired. But for now i am excited about a more local meetup. And all this talk of martini-nation has me looking forward to it. I'll say again that I can be anywhere in LA just about any time.
  • no can do 9-11... duty calls. prince show in SJ
  • Why don't move the party to Tijuana? It would be more easy for me to join you there, heh.
  • Horray for Calif. meetups... and there was much dancing Have dates/locations been settled on for each respective event?
  • RXR, it's looking like the Bay Area meetup will be 9/11/04 (es el Queso, is that South Jersey??). If you need any info or whatever, drop me a line. Zemat, I would love to go to Tijuana! Unfortunately, the budget does not allow :o(
  • Okay, I just got RXR's e-mail... that's 3 confirmed (with myself and hubby, that's 5!). Jason (my hubby), has made some suggestions: 1 - anyone farther north more comfortable with Sacramento? Any votes for Sacramento? (my hand is not raised. I love where I live, but it's pretty much "any city" (don't tell Jason I said that!!)) 2 - I took it for granted, but should make sure others know, that monkeys can of course bring others (significant or otherwise).
  • Hey, I've had a request to move the date a week back (Sept. 4th). Does that interfere with Burning Man? Would that date work for you guys?
  • Hey all, I'll be moving to Oregon in August, and might be swooping down batlike on Berkeley sometime after the midpoint of that month. Just, like, you know, whatever, just wanted to pipe up.
  • Oh of course. Back when we had the SoCal meet-up with the MeFi people, no one wanted to come. It was just me and Jim T. and Space Kitty as the monkey representatives. And now I'm moving! No fair! :P~ Oh well, bananas for everyone )))) have fun.
  • Kimberly, if it makes you feel any better, I don't think there will be too many NoCal monkeys going, either. On the bright side of that one, though, is that there'll be room for all of us in Burgermeister! :o) PF, will your swooping be so far after the middle of August that it'll be September? We'd love to see you!
  • sout' joisey? nah, but Dionne Warwick knows where i'll be...
  • A meetup for me? Awwww, you shouldn't have! I'm closer to helL.A. than The City, but I am up for either/both/any meetup.
  • Yes, Cali, you are *that* important. :o)
  • So what's the word then?
  • Well, it looks like we've got 5. And judging from the lack of response, it'll still be 9/11.
  • Either 9/4 or 9/11 works for me...
  • I am all confused now. So we're doing something in San Francisco, sept. 11th? 5 people so far? That's fine, I can probably make it, or earlier as well. It's actually more difficult to plan for these things the farther away the date is. So what are we doing, SF ZOO and Burgermeister? Is there going to be a separate SoCal meet?
  • Since there are so few of us, I think Burgermeister will work great. After that, I'm not so sure. I see that some are in favor of the zoo, and some aren't quite. Have you heard of Jillians, in the financial district (or close)? It's a big bar/club/pool hall. That might be fun... And of course, I'd love to hear some suggestions!!
  • Attention!! September 4th won't work - it does interfere with Burning Man. So, definite date - September 11th. One considerate monkey suggested donating blood in honor of the day; I think it would be inconvenient to have a bunch of woozy monkeys running around the city. Perhaps we could donate some $$ to the red cross, in the name of Monkeyfilter, or perform some other kind of community service? Any ideas?
  • So, once again, I've said something stupid because I mis-read a comment, and didn't catch my error until I went back through it for another reason entirely. So, yeah. I feel stupid. I'm a walking stereotype, sigh.
  • Yo, cheeseguy. Not to derail this thread or anything, but you're gonna love the Prince show...
  • so, any consensus on the so-cal mofi monkey meetup?
  • Hey guys! Just wanted to put the thread back on the sidebar... We're still on for Sept. 11th, and the place is still Burgermeister. That's about all I know for the moment. Has anyone come up with ideas for what to do after that? We have an under-21-er in the group, so going to the local Hell's Angels bar & getting plastered is out ;o) I like the idea of some sort of community service in honor of the day, and then perhaps something fun afterwards. Anyway, if anyone needs info, just post here or email me.
  • Somebody better remember to bring a camera along... We wantsss evidencccce!
  • Space Kitty, I think the SoCal party planner flaked. What do you all say to having the SoCal/NorCal* meet ups the same day? Maybe we can get some webcam party conference thingy going. *See how nice I am? I use the completely nonsensical and ungrammatical abbreviation you've chosen for yourselves. *pats northern monkeys on their heads*
  • FYI. You all may want to make a slight alteration to your plans. I of course now have company coming in from out of town and won't make it. Well, probably won't make it, we'll see.
  • Thanks for posting that Cali! I never would have seen it. So, they're meeting at Valencia, which is at 199 Valencia, at 7:00 on the 10th. I see the Man himself might even be there!! I won't be able to go, but how about other Monkeys? And if you all do want to do the meetup on the 10th, do we need to move our date?
  • Is there a plan for the meetup? Personally, Friday evening works better than Saturday, so I'd be perfectly happy to roll in all into one thing and crash the meetup at Zeitgeist, but if there's an under-21 amongst us, I wouldn't want to exclude anyone. Thoughts, anyone? If Cali can't make the 11th, maybe we should consider re-scheduling, the more, the merrier.
  • Though I appreciate the thought, don't reschedule on my account. I'm much more likely to make an LA meetup, and the only weekend I could do that would be the 18th.
  • As a native Southern Californian (Chula Vista and San Diego) who is currently stuck in electorally-impaired Florida, I hate you all. *cries*
  • We southern Californians seem to be as unable to organize a meeting as are the Oregonian MeFites. I think our priorities are a little off.
  • path- all the SoCal monkeys are more than welcome to come join our little shindig up here! I just realized why nobody else is responding to the request for clarification about the meetup. They are all at Burning Man, clearly, and I'm a big loser stuck here at work.
  • See what I mean? Surely Burning Man should take a back seat to a meetup.
  • Childbirth should take a back seat to a meetup! That's setting your priorities right! /monomaniac (monkeymaniac?)
  • Yo all, I am still into the LA meetup. We should make a plan. Places in LA I would suggest: The Bigfoot Lodge Ye Rustic Inn Those are all I can think of at the moment. Don't feel that strongly about either, and would love to see other suggestions.
  • Ah, coming back to work today isn't so bad, since my internet connection has been down since Saturday. Such a good example of what will happen when you forget to pay your bill. Anyway, I'm afraid I won't be able to make it to the meetup. There's an adopt-a-thon going on this weekend, and I absolutely have to be there. Sorry guys....
  • Sorry to see that minda25 is out. Can anyone else make it? I can, but a single-person meetup is kind of, well, sad. Would a different date work better for people? Or should we just agree to invite our monkey selves to the Metafilter event on Friday?
  • So. I came back in here to see who'd commented, then re-read my comment. I meant to say that there's an adopt-a-thon going on that I'm working at. Just so we're clear. I'm not really with it today, can you tell? ambrosia, I have a list of 5 others who are coming: - exppii - RXR - olganism - Medusa - LoopyG I've got more details, but they're all at home. I'll pass it all on later. :o)
  • Thanks for the update, minda25. Good to know. I think we'd originally discussed Burgermeister, which works for me but feels a little *too* easy, since I live three blocks away, so I'm happy to go farther afield if someone else has a suggestion.
  • Okay, so what's an adopt-a-thon - is this pet-related, I gather?
  • ambrosia, you shouldn't feel guilty. In fact, you should feel proud to live so near to such a wonderful place :o) tracicle, the adopt-a-thon is a big old (mostly cat) event at Petsmart that two volunteer orginazations and the county participate in. To me, they happen "once in a while", but I'm sure if I attended the monthly meetings, I'd know ahead of time when they were to happen. Anyway, they're pretty fun, kind of hectic, and get a bunch of animals adopted. An interesting story that I was just reminded of: The last adopt-a-thon I worked, one of the volunteers from another organization brought along her dog. Her King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, in fact, that she'd just recently gotten from a breeder. I found this to be exceedingly strange, since breeders and rescue organization volunteers usually don't mix well at all.
  • *cough* grateful 1 shoutout *cough*
  • I'm showing my blonde roots here... quid, I don't get it! *sob*
  • okay, quid, it's a deal, but you better remember me at the next London meetup...
  • So what's happening to the SoCalMoFi? Am I gonna have to take charge of this? If you do it at Musso & Martini's, I'll have to be the designated driver, since the last time I mixed vermouth and my prescription meds, I ended up sounding exactly like Karen on "Will & Grace". If 9/11 is the date, I promise to bring thoroughly tasteless goody bags that will pass safely through most security checkpoints. Talk to me, Sudden Californium!!!
  • And remember everymonkey, Sunday, September 19th is "Talk Like a Pirate Day". If we do the meetup on the 18th, we could do a pirate theme. (Way back in 1978, I attended a grown-up Halloween party wearing nerd glasses and an eyepatch and told everybody I was a "computer pirate"...)
  • As a public service, let me point out that the MetaMonsters are having a SF MeetUp on Friday, Sept. 10th. Sounds like a party just begging to be crashed.
  • I'll be at the MeFi meetup on Friday. ...where did all the other Monkeys go?
  • *bangs on wall* How did this fall off the sidebar...? If I was as paranoid as I seem to be, I'd think I was being ignored. *bangs on wall*
  • *joins wendell, bangs on wall*
  • If there's a SoCalMoFi meetup after the 21st, I'll totally be there, until then I'll totally be far far away in the midwest. *joins chorus of simian fists banging on the wall*
  • *waits for wall to break, causing hilarious monkey pileup*
  • I am also into the SoCal meetup. Let's get it together. After the 21st is good for me, so why don't we make it happen. I fear that many of us may have lost track of this thread, but it may not really deserve a second FPP. So sad. Anyway, let's hatch a plan.
  • Whee! SoCal's back on the map! I'm in - let me know where & when....
  • (Bit late but ... ) I'm showing my blonde roots here... quid, I don't get it! Umm, there was no subtext. I was asking for a shoutout - but all subtle-like, in between coughs. By the way, I did a shout-out for you at our London do, minda25 - I'll mail you the photo. but you better remember me at the next London meetup... I feel bad for forgetting you ambrosia! Deal.
  • I got the pic, thanks! Nobody's going to understand what it's all about, but I plan on printing it out & putting it on my fridge :o) On another note, I remember Tracicle saying something about being in the Northern California I'm traumatized by all the fun-making at "NorCal" ;o) area in January. Any news, trac? I want to make sure I don't double-book myself again...
  • cool, no problem bubs! :)
  • So is the SF meetup definitely at Burgermeister? And when, exactly?
  • I will be, minda, in about the second-to-last week of January. Dates to come whenever we book tickets because we're still debating the possible options.
  • Well, how'd it go? Did you guys all find the place okay? Did you find eachother okay?? Did it happen at all? I have to say, I would have much rather been at the meetup than at that adoption event. What a weird day that was! There was some yelling (we wouldn't adopt a cat to someone and he got mad), some drama with homeless looking he/shes trying to dump kittens, and the county with their poor little puppy dogs that Petsmart wanted to keep outside. By the time I was ready to leave at 5:45, I was ready to drop. But, all the puppies got adopted, my organization adopted out 2 kittens, and the other cat rescue group adopted out 9. Not bad at all. Thanks for the update tracicle! :o)
  • Well, how'd it go? Did you guys all find the place okay? Did you find eachother okay?? Did it happen at all? Errr, nope. Let's try again. I still owe quid a shout-out. I think we need a new thread, or change the title in the sidebar on this one so that it gets the attention of the Bay Area monkeys....
  • That sucks! I guess a specific meeting time would have helped... We'll have to try again when tracicle is here. I'll make a note to start up a new thread in December.
  • In other meet up news (but not worthy of an FPP), "monkeyfilterers" got a shout out from amberglow's meet up in Manchester. See last pic.
  • Amberglow is cute......must be gay.
  • Shotsy, do you think a new post to generage SoCal meetup interest is needed? I wish I could help organize this, but I know f all about LA (I move there on Tuesday), so I'm no good when it comes to suggesting a place. It seems a like a new post might generate enough momentum.
  • sorry, i've been tied up the last few days. what is going on with this? Why do we suck?
