An interview with Tommy Chong, who is serving nine months in prison for selling bongs (not marijuana, just bongs.) The LA Weekly has another article on Chong and his family, and recently Jesse Ventura interviewed Stan Levenson, Chong's attorney. [Via Drug WarRant.]

Here's a MeFi thread on Chong.

Dear Santa,

I would like a new glass bong for X-mas. Also, could you arrange for Tommy Chong's release from prison? And for John Ashcroft to die slowly from crotchrot?

Thanks,

MML

No bongs, no vibrators...

America sounds fun.

Hey, we got Bush! . . ahhh . . ummm. Hm.

“Growing up, I’d always had this fear that our family wasn’t like everyone else,” says Precious Chong, “and that we’d be punished for it someday — and then this happened. My parents never locked their doors. They do now.”

this line broke my heart.

sorry, from the LA Weekly article.

Unfortunately, the Ventura interview wasn't effective. I realise that his is a ratings dependent talk show like most others, dependent on quick contextless critical-analysis-free quick soundbites that can demarcate opposing viewpoints into the separate corners of the ring. But that isn't the case in real-life. Obviously, America has intellectuals, but does it have an intellectual class? If so, mainstream media targeted to them, needs to present comprehensive critical coverage on this issue. I don't think US is at the stage where a good marijuana debate can be effectively conducted on mass media.

Depends on what you consider mass media; books, magazines, MoFi?

If "tobacco water pipes" are banned what's next.

Personally I think stoners should all start smoking out of fruit (yes, its possible) forcing the US to choose between easing pot laws or scurvy.

Federal appeals court OKs medical marijuana in some cases

I have smoked marijuana through a potato.

Spooky: Those are potential mass media. By mass media, I mean media that currently have a prominent, if not dominant, place in mass culture. That would be New York Times, Wash. Post, USA Today, NBC Today show, Oprah Winfrey, CNN ...etc

Time does qualify, but the piece you linked to is a descriptive piece on medical marijuana history, not critical journalism like this survey in the Economist.

My bad. Correct Economist link.

The cost of Tommy Chong's prosecution: $12 million.

I still can't quite understand what exactly Tommy Chong has done wrong (except for all those bloody awful films, obviously).

You see, that's what we do in the U.S., use an unrelated crime, like selling bongs, to nail the bastard for another crime, like The Corsican Brothers.
