Curious George: Internet radio. I'm alone working on a big project right now and badly need to hear some tunes. I want any pointers for good grass-roots "Internet radio" that has good college style flavor (like a mix of indy/retro/bubbling-under). I don't even know where to start looking. I've been listening to some big FM simulcasts from the UK but the content is either overplayed hits, annoying hip hop, or ads. I went to one US college station I know of but they had a baseball game going.
  • Whoo hoo! I'm the first, try that over at Ask! Anyway, http://www.somafm.com/indiepop.pls should fit the bill.
  • You could try our college station, KUOI . It is completely free-from (one of the few remaining in the country), so it is a complete crapshoot as to what is playing at any time. As of this posting, they have some pretty good old bluegrass going.
  • WUVT
  • Try iTunes' Radio Tuner channel. Lots of feeds with everything from 50s to Urban to Electronica to Spoken Word to Jazz. You'll find something to suit your interests, or better yet, sample those things you've never had before. I'm partial to Dr. Yo's: from Residents to Pixies, all the way to Einsturzende Neubauten.
  • KEXP. Best radio station ever.
  • Check out Triple J, an Australian station. There are no commercials, the music is a wide variety of new stuff and obscure bands, and their morning (about 4:00 PM Eastern time) DJs are pretty funny.
  • Thanks, monkeys. I'm really enjoying these stations.
  • Check out Triple J, an Australian station As funded by the Australian taxpayer. Enjoy!
  • Not for everyone, but worth a mention: - Phish - Grateful Dead ...bootlegged shows, in their entirety.
  • Lovely stuff. Thanks for asking the question, rolypoly, and thanks to the rest of you for the stations. I can even groove to some of them on dial up. Ray!
  • krcw: fairly eclectic (can lean towards electronic at times) wfuv: fairly folky/rootsy east village radio: hipstery wfmu: zany bluegrasscountry.org: the title doesn't lie
  • Fistful of Soundtracks (iTunes under "Eclectic") Boombastic Radio (iTunes under "Urban") Beyond the Beat Generation
  • I just came across this in the Indy: He tore into society as a Sex Pistol: now Steve Jones is tearing up the radio waves as Los Angeles' hottest DJ. He talks to James Brown about his anarchic show. And there is this ref at the end: Listen to 'Jonesy's Jukebox' at 7-9pm British summer time at http://indie1031.fm. Not listened myself yet but it might be worth a pop.
  • WOXY 97X recently stopped broadcasting and as a result, in this thread --> http://msg.woxy.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14693 there are SEVERAL really good radion stations. The best I've found are the afore mentioned KEXP, but I also listen to the student-run voice of Ohio University: ACRN,
    Radio XY,
    and http://www.radioio.com
But, as I said, there are lots of good radio stations mentioned in that thread.
However, the BEST news is that WOXY has found some investers and will begin broadcasting on the web soon, and unlike most internet-only rations, they will have dj's. So when it starts broadcasting on the web in a couple weeks, I highly recommend it.
  • Progress report: So far this list of suggestions is awesome and I think I'm going to be trying them all out. I have to say that Radio Paradise was one of the early victors... nice energy level for my work project and I've heard everything from Santana to Swedish stuff this past hour. Was jamming to KEXP earlier but they started slowing it a bit too much with old western / bluegrass.
  • I can't second the WOXY comments any stronger. Best radio station ever.
  • WCBN - Very, very, very eclectic radio station for the University of Michigan.
  • A little OT, but I have to make a comment out the station linked to above, Indie103. It's actually owned by Clear Channel, and when it debuted in Los Angeles, everyone was set to hate it and boycott it. Then it came, and everyone hated to admit it, but it was actually.... good. So now I don't know how to feel.
  • "I've been listening to some big FM simulcasts from the UK but the content is either overplayed hits, annoying hip hop, or ads." You've obviously been listening to the wrong stations. Try BBC 6Music. Some good weekly shows, worth checking out as well: John Peel. Stuart Maconie's (shittily named but otherwise excellent) Freak Zone. Mixing It - cutting edge experimental music. Marc Reiley's Rocket Science - *excellent*. Charlie Gillett's "The Sound of the World" - click on Saturday Night on BBC London, and "latest Show on Demand" and enjoy 2 hours of diverse music, from America to Zimbabwe. I love it.
  • Radio so good it's illegal. Broadcasting from a VAN! KBFR Boulder Free Radio
  • Digital Club Network. Loads of great shows (including two by Guided by Voices).
  • Yay! Does that mean I've won something?
