Take your places at the starting gate... From a MetaTalk thread:
After the server stabilizes, I'm going to open it back up. I'm still getting way too many jrun errors, but I think the site could use some new blood. posted by mathowie at 10:29 AM PST on June 11
You monkeys who slept through the last tiny window of opportunity: you know what to do.
  • no thanks, i like it better here.
  • Me too.
  • you know what to do. And that is?
  • I didn't sleep through it so much as I blinked. Any bets on how long it'll be open? I say it'll close again within two days. On preview, me three.
  • You know...i'm with SideDish and Fes on this one. Mefi is becoming rather uptight for my tastes. I prefer my simian buddies over here - much more laid back and less prone to poo flinging and whining. So i think i'll pass. The mefites i like are already registered here anyhows. (anybody seen Q around these parts lately?)
  • Nah. Besides, our fridge is always full of cockpunch.
  • Yeah, where's Quonsar the hizzie lately?
  • I'd register for AskMe, but that's about it.
  • And that is? Go back to sleep, obviously. But first, have a banana!
  • Shhhh... I don't want mathowie to hear me. I think MeFite #1 is actually feeling a little Monkey Envy, or else he wouldn't be interested in "new blood". (What I think MeFi really needs is new Brains! Brains! Brains!) For your part, you don't have to be an active participant in the poo flinging there to get some benefit out the membership. Getting the members' cookie makes it easier to keep track of what's going on there (though not as easy as the "Recent Commens" make it here). AskMeFi is still a very useful resource. I've seen a few MoFi posts duplicated on MeFi lately without proper attribution; wouldn't you like to give yourself some credit? And maybe once in a while one of you can just interject a comment into a PoliFi thread "YOU'RE ALL FULL OF SHIT!!!", for which we will all be grateful. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to "the blue" before the server comes back up and they miss me. If you speak of me, don't use my name, just refer to me as "Foop Throat".
  • 'Sides, we're not ready for the Big Leagues... WhateverFilter
  • bah. *turns back, cloak swishing behind him, strides out of hall, footsteps ringing on the flagstones*
  • Apparently Mr J. Run has already signed up...
  • For the umpteenth time in months, a system error scatters MeFi'ers to all corners of the playground, while the monkeys lazily sip banana daiquiris on the branches.
  • I like it here.
  • Mmm. Brains.
  • As mentioned above, it's nice to have a membership if only for the cookies. I appreciate the "new comments" tag, makes keeping up with when you are in a thread that much easier.
  • Ah, the irony. I just tried the link, and the site's down. Hehehehehehehehehehehehehee. Up with the lavender! Down with the blue! Revolution is not an AOL keyword! The streets will flow with the blood of the infidels! I really have to pee!
  • Was it the rushing rivers of blood? That always gets me.
  • Yeah, when I got my MeFi membership I realized it was well on it's way to becoming slashdot, which I don't bother with either. I mean, why would you? Give it a few minutes, and someone will inevitably voice a close approximation of your opinion for you. I've thrown in a few comments there, but there's no way in hell I'm ever going to post a FPP there. I might do one here in about 6 months. Also, does the new comments function (here, on monkeyfilter) work for anyone, or am I not the only one having problems with it? Sorry if that's been talked about before.
  • You monkeys who slept through the last tiny window of opportunity: you know what to do. Yes I do. *Takes off pants and picks up bugle*
  • Well, I'm enjoying my MeFi membership, at least for the cookies. I've done one minor post and made some comments. Nothing spectacular, but it's fun. I also spend time here, have made more posts here, and sometimes comment less. I don't know what my point is - that I don't think having one membership precludes having the other, or that more is good, or that cookies are yummy, or something. Probably the yummy part. Of course, I am not working this month and next (yes!) and so I have lots of time to fully use membership on both sites. YMMV.
  • Because MeFi has been closed to new membership for so long, it's effectively become an echo chamber where the same views are repeated ad nauseum in whatever the thread of the day happens to be. We Monkeys, by contrast, seem to be much more interested in fostering community, rather than argumentativeness. I'd much rather be part of the Lavender than have to put up with the Blue.
  • Server Error The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Could not connect to JRun Server. More than new blood, new servers are what's needed, I think...
  • MonkeyFilter: I don't know what my point is. Actually, I agree with the general consensus: it's much nicer over here. I don't worry about what I say or post. Not having a MetaTalk equivalent was a great decision, O Monkeybashi!
  • Give it a few minutes, and someone will inevitably voice a close approximation of your opinion for you. Heh...not me, since I am very much in the minority over In The Blue, what with being an evil conservative/Republican/military type. And lately, I have been enjoying MoFo a bit better than MeFi -- probably because it doesn't go down three or four times every damn day.
  • /waves hand Away with this filthy metafilter!
  • I'll join if I remember to check back and am not distracted by life in general this weekend. I meant to last time, but then that pesky life kept getting in the way... I'm sure I'll spend far more time in the lavender, but there are reasons for the blue as well. Sneaky, devious reasons...*shifty eyes*
  • And Daniel, the "new comments" function here works irregularly for me. One might compare them to certain servers in the Land Of Blue, were one so inclined.
  • Braaaaiiinnnsss. /zombie-Reagan
  • what wendell said. ;) did anyone else see the recent meta thread where mathowie says he got banned from SA? classic. it was funny for so many reasons... the irony, his appalled indignation, SA's barbarism, etc. now *that's* comedy gold. [sorry matt. i feel your pain.] the dos attack was way over the top, though. i assume monkey amnesty is totally out of the question? :D
  • I still jealous that Gyan posts all his best links over there, and I can't comment in them. Damn Gyan. Damn Metafilter.
  • and i bow to the mighty power of monkeybashi's beardless server.
  • .
  • i'd hit it. MoFi: MoFo: MoFum. welcome Mr. Spike. Your table is waiting
  • I third wendell's comments. Diversity of opinion is sorely needed over there. Then again, every time I really want to comment it's because the MeFi hive mind is bashing my religion, and though I'm tempted to respond, I'm reminded of the popular saying, "Arguing over the Internet is like running in the Special Olympics..." I have shit to do this weekend. If I have time, I'll get a membership. If not, well, no big loss. I like hanging out with you folks better.
  • Our 'nanners are better. Nobody's done, you know, gross stuff with 'em.
  • 'cept Dizzy, that filthy bastard.
  • well, it's all pretty much moot. MeFi is back up, and new user registration ain't. whatever.
  • Wendell- thanks for the good words! I wouldn't turn down a Mefi membership, but honestly, folks, it really is much nicer here. We don't insult each other at the drop of a hat, don't get in fights too often, and are generally polite and decent monkeys. Lately, Mefi is more like Fark, or SA, or some of the darker corners of usenet. Snarkiness as far as the eye can see...
  • What's SA again?
  • I hate all you guys. As soon as Metafilter lets me in I'm leaving.
  • Oh really though, it's not that bad. They're just very different cultures. Yeah, you get the vitriol and snark there, but you also get some really thorough and gratifying discussions. Sometimes you just can't have a hard, honest arguement about things without stepping on some toes. This place tends towards something completely different (which is why I'm on both), but we too have our own shortcomings. I think we can throttle back on the spite just a hair. I mean, didn't this place start because they wouldn't let us join their club and we said "well FU we'll make our own club, and make it cooler than yours!"
  • actually it was more like "well heck, we can do that - 'til then, MeFi! Ta!" That's the royal monkey 'we' of course - "we" being Monkeybashi. And Kimberly for the .com. I encourage the dual-citizenship, it's all banana.
  • How many metafilter logins will pete_best be requiring?
  • Ah, Daniel, always the voice of reason.:) And, Wendell, I believe that would be feep throat.;)
  • Darshon, I was thinking foon throat, personally. I got a membership in the last run, but I felt a little lost in the crowd over there, after all my determination to post and comment regularly and constructively. People generally said the same as me, only better. Now I enjoy the tasty cookies, and occasionally fling a comment (poo-free) in here and there. The world needs less poo. Oh, and languagehat, yes. I also agree that having no MoFiTalk was a good idea. And nothing to do with the fact that I started to build one, then got sidetracked, and then forgot the half-finished monstrosity. (Actually I think it'll make a fine home for the Curious Georges and statistical gathering we do so well. When I get it done. Yeah.) [insert drunken-type "I love you guys!" here]
  • Our monkeybashi is way cuter than their metabashi.
  • You done good, tracicle, looks like. =) Daniel, yes, I am having problems with the "new comments" feature also. It seems to be stuck.
  • My only problem with MoFi is that everyone seems quite in love with the concept of the monkey. Yes, bananas and poo-flinging! It's like the inside joke that never dies, despite everyone knowing it! Aaaaaaaaahhh~! Actually, that is definitely the only thing wrong with MoFi. I've been finding quirky links here for ages, and I do adore you all. Even the ones who remind us of the site's name. Yes, you are worthy of love as well. (Hmm, I wonder when the sign-ups are back up. I missed the last one, and I'll be a liar if I said I didn't want to partake in a MeFi hissy-fit thread once in a while. Too much love here sometimes.)
  • Hey look! We're only a few more members away from 1200! Time for a paaaahhhteee, people! Pardon the euphoria. Have been splurging in books these past couple of days Tracicle is zee best (^_^) I thought wendell looked more like a Theep Froat. Also, to echo roly's question. SA = ? *staggers off drunkenly to another bookshop for shopping spree*
  • And no, the "New comments" on the main part of the front page don't work, but the sidebar ones should. Mostly. *smacks own wrist* MoFi is still pretty amateur, I'm afraid.
  • Our beloved admin gets bonus points for answering my frantic emails mere minutes after I sent them. Clearly she sits by her email all day long because she loves us! I do think the two sites can co-exist. Both definitely have their own style and flair. You expect certain comments and certain front page posts at Metafilter that you'll not find here. I guess you could say "MeFi" is the cool kid we'd all like to be, but a lot of the time you just want to play Dungeons & Dragons with the monkeys. That all makes some sort of sense inside my head, I assure you.
  • Too much love here sometimes Hey, Sacred and Profane? You're a total arse-goblin. /troublemaker
  • I guess you could say "MeFi" is the cool kid we'd all like to be, but a lot of the time you just want to play Dungeons & Dragons with the monkeys. Erp. :( I would've said, one's good for fightin' and one's good for lovin' but.... LOOK I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE LARP PEOPLE, OK?
  • (LIGHTENING BOLT! LIGHTENING BOLT!!)
  • I have soooo many more hit points than you, Daniel.
  • They like us, they really like us... "MoFi is still pretty amateur, I'm afraid." Is not.
  • OK, and then what is this Monkeybashi that people keep talking about?
  • I'm assuming SA *may* be some Web-savvy reincarnation of the original Nazi army, but I'm guessing it isn't, and I'd reeeeeally like to know what it is. Can someone please humor me?
  • Monkeybashi
  • SomethingAwful(.com)
  • Daniel, I think you're right: Metafilter is a more intense, harder community, even by just looking at the background color you get a sense of the overall feeling. Monkeyfilter is very much an organic community - impossible to predict, always changing, and consiquently the communication lies at a personal level. Metafilter seems more of a human construction, perhaps as the medium was built from nothing by the creator - maybe the communication is due to the medium rather than the desire for community? Metafilter is Great: it stands industrially strong, as a pillar of civiliation. It is great because it is eminent, distinguished, aristocratic and grand. In Metafilter, you have to get a implied liscence to go anywhere near their banana tree. Metafilter bananas seem so sweet.
  • Why join Metafilter? All the cool people are hanging out here. Seriously, why bother?
  • 1. AskMe. 2. Practice in stayin' nicey-nice for when MoFi surges to 17 times its current size.
  • well for one, we've got <1200 ppl here, and there's >17,000 there, which means mo' different links and comments (theoretically). Beleeb me, I'm all about the monkey I just sayin' if you get the MeFi signup page it's worth the 30 seconds it takes to fill it out 8 different times for your different personalities. Ah, as it were. *cough*
  • Sorry I'm late! What did I miss?
  • nicollo, If I had the money I would give you a grant to start a social science research on web-communities. Not that it would be useful or anything but you make it sound so grandiose and mystifing.
  • Ok, Pete, hand them over. I want those seven extra usernames and passwords now, buster. We're going to march right back to that candy counter and give them back. Then you're going to apologize after you explain to that nice Mr. Haughey what you did.
  • I'll definitely try for a Mefi membership, if only for AskMe, but I am spending less and less time there because MoFi is just so much more relaxing. I go to MeFi and get all worked up and then come over here to relax and revel in the bananas.
  • I'm not ashamed to admit it... I would love to have a MeFi account. I don't think it would limit my participation here at all, but I've been lurking on MeFi for a year-and-a-half and it would be nice to occasionally participate. That being said, I'm down with the monkeys, and I'm really glad something like MoFi exists. If I'm not able to sqeak in to Metafilter, it won't be a completely angst-instilling experience.
  • What would be angst-instilling would be being thrown OUT of Metafilter. Or not.
  • the quidnunc kid: Meet me in the parking lot after school. We'll see who's the arse-goblin then! Seriously though, Monkeyfilter definitely isn't just a Metafilter lurker hang-out anymore. It's got it's own magical groove goin' down. Word. (And was the "amateur" comment in reference to this site's code? I'm no code-wizard, but I'd say Mefi is definitely more stylish when it comes to intricate code hocus pocus. FOR NOW. As a community, though, this place seems to get the job done just as well. Whatever that "job" may entail, though, I'm not entirely sure.)
  • you're soaking in it.
  • Yeah, where's Quonsar the hizzie lately? that's 'huzzle' to you, kind sir.
  • Ah there you are Q! Hadnt seen you around here in a while. Was missing your irreverence.
  • "Yo, I don't hang out with those guys, man. I ain't got nothin' to do with those dudes." "And then I saw your female with 'em too, what's up with her? I've been hearing that she's been givin' that stuff out to all of them metafilter guys." "Shut the fuck up, Chico man!"
  • JoeChip wins.
  • Seconded.
  • I hate it when I don't get a really cool cultural reference... administrator, please hope me!
  • Okay, THAT'S IT!! Metafilter versus Monkeyfilter DANCE OFF.
  • Will those of us who belong to sites both be expected to dance for both sides? My webbed feet might get worn to little orange nubs, but it would be for a good cause. I just wanted to say that while I'd love to meet up with any of you on MeFi, I'm also delighted by the "I like it here just fine" attitude that so many of you have. I seem to recall a comment from awhile back that said that MoFi was MeFi's "waiting room", and I find it so cool that MoFi is now a distinct and equally worthwhile community. It's so satisfying to hear that many of you are content here. Probing the source of this deep satisfaction, I suspect that maybe I'm just a Canadian repulsed by dreadful copycat cultural entities like "Canadian Idol" and our everlasting colonial artistic insecurities and the MoFi self-satisfaction is solace and balm to that part of me that just wants to scream, "Can't we forget about Them and what They Do and just do our own damn thing?" Better to leave that sense of satisfaction unprobed, methinks. But anyway, you've really got something good going here and I'm glad you know all know it.
  • JoeChip that's too funny, esp. since I clicked on this thread immediately after commenting in the BBoys thread. Wacky!
  • Wendell, it's from a cheesy breakdancing movie.
  • the quidnunc kid: Meet me in the parking lot after school. Dude, If you want a date, it's dinner and a movie or else I don't put out.
  • *drives by, yells "Woo!" from open car window*
  • Monkeyfilter is very much an organic community make that orgasmic
  • You know, not too long ago, I would have given a lot to have a MeFi membership, and jumped for joy at the sound of the membership opening up. But, you know… after basking in the wonderfulness that is MoFi, I really don’t think I’ll bother. Loathe as I truly am about offending the dual-member’d MoFiites here, it must be said that MeFi has enough problems, both technical and otherwise, to make me not want to read it any longer, much less join it. And nothing brings out these issues more than being a MonkeyFilter member. The downtime is a big problem. Though I feel a passing stab of pity for all the issues MeFi has had lately, I have to wonder why almost no one is saying how mathowie didn’t see this coming. IIS? + Jrun? + CF?? I mean, I’ll be as nice about it as I can in this post, but isn’t it kind of odd how no really huge, well-backed, multi-user, uptime-dependant sites out there ever seem to use any part of this combination, much less more than one if these componants? Isn’t it even odder that no comments I’ve read on the topic (and I’ve read a lot of them, though not all) seem willing to point this out? The elitism and barely-veiled prejudice of the MeFi users – while generally in the background – seems to be much more prominent these days also. There is a huge – HUGE – thread about how MeFi can improve its situation by somehow trying to guarantee diversity among new members. I’ll say that again, just because it is both scary and ridiculous. There is a large thread’s worth of suggestions about how to make sure that MeFi’s next membership spree can somehow guarantee diversity – racial, religious, you name it – among the new members. The implied statement, I think, is somewhere between “no membership for you unless you can somehow show us that you are entertaining” and “there are too many North American members – therefore, we should do what we can to ensure that any North American memberships fail.” The third issue is that I can’t post this, or a comment like this, to MeFi itself. And in the past, I’ve wanted to comment on so many things, so many times, that reading conversations on MeFi is becoming little more than an exercise in frustration. It is thus that MeFi is purged from the bookmarks today, and this latest promise of MeFi membership will be largely answered with a Yawn by me.
  • Your call, dude. My bookmarks are staying right where they are, J-Jrunrun or no.
  • Metafilter was not initially built to be a site with 100,000 page views a day, or whatever it is. And its only recently that its been having problems. Considering its all been coded by one person, the effort of changing the whole thing to another system would be pretty huge. but isn't it kind of odd how no really huge, well-backed, multi-user, uptime-dependant sites out there ever seem to use any part of this combination, much less more than one if these componants? But not that many of those sites are a single coders bedroom project, either.
  • It seems I've just signed up for some potentially homoerotic awesomeness and a breathtaking West Side Story battle of the 'net gangs. Thanks Monkeyfilter!
  • MonkeyFilter: some potentially homoerotic awesomeness.
  • You know, I'd be half tempted to get a mefi account so that we could post links to our discussion days earlier on the links there.
  • Zemat, it's step, step, shuffle, step, kick! Not step kick step shuffle step! Sheesh! And your cigarette keeps going out, please remember to draw on it once in awhile. Everybody else remember we're snapping _on_ the beat! Those of you who think it's funny to snap on the off-beat will be moved to the back! Okay everyone got their leather jackets? Orchestra ready? And ah one- ah two . . .
  • Fucking hell, I don't know what we'd do without people like pete_best. I'm just glad I'm not the only pop tart here! DAMNIT METAFILTER OPEN SIGNUPS SO THIS THREAD CAN DIE. *ahem* Sooo, what's happenin' guys?
  • Hey what happened to our date? I don't know, guys get you all worked up and then never call grumble grumble
  • Orange Swan: Are you saying Monkeyfilter is to Metafilter as Canada is to U.S.A.? Because that's an interesting analogy...both think they're better than the other, but envy some of what the other has. And one is (or thinks it is) in the cultural shadow of the other. For non North-Americans, substitute New Zealand/Australia or Scotland/England or whatever local equivalent applies
  • The whole sign ups are open! no they're closed! thing is a roller coaster for me. I completely missed it the last time. Damn their eyes. Someone send me an email this time, ok? :)~
  • Kimberly they're open now! Go! just kidding! No, seriously they just opened up! Quick quick! just kidding! ;) Sorry jes' messin wif ya
  • You're such a brat, pete. And I mean that in the best way possible.
  • Yer just a pete, Brat. And I mean that in the worst possible way.
  • Sorry quidnunc, I got all jittery and nervous. I didn't think you'd like me without a Metafilter account. I think, after reading this thread, I realized that you liked me for who I was. *INSERT SWELLING MUSIC*
  • I'd like a Metafilter Membership. Just so I could add all you monkeys with accounts as my friends.
  • I'm afraid I'd be the one chosen last at volleyball.
  • Man, I've been *looking* for a thread like this. Finally! Worlord, I completely agree. "The third issue is that I can’t post this, or a comment like this, to MeFi itself. And in the past, I’ve wanted to comment on so many things, so many times, that reading conversations on MeFi is becoming little more than an exercise in frustration." I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated by that. I don't care if I'm *&%$* "elite", I just want to comment now and again. I've seen some of the new user threads like you mentioned, and it's a bit odd. There really is an undercurrent of "...but that would let the *commoners* in!" to everything. Maybe it's just me, though. It feels more like "we don't want anyone else" than "our server can't handle the load, no matter what the real cause. And, of course, MeFi's not my baby, so really Matt could just take his toys and go home. Obviously there's no obligation on his part to make me feel welcome. You'd think, though, that that would be a goal. I dunno. I do tend to read MetaFilter more often, because I find it (and Ask MetaFilter) more interesting, usually. I suspect it's just because I'm not looking here hard enough, as there's certainly plenty of interesting people.
  • It all depends on you taste. For example, Gyan has turned to the dark-blue side and I undestand him. There is better and bigger audience for his kind of posts there. It feels lika a big loss to me because I really loved his posts but the truth is that I could feel his dissapointment all the way through here. Very little feedback and a lack of fellow science freaks, like clf, who fortunately has also double citizenship. Anyway. Gyan's preferences are for the best since I really enjoy more how the scientific discussions carry over there and I really have nothing to add to them. Well, that are just my fellings. I don't really know what are the causes for Gyan's abandonment of MoFi.
  • sometimes fellow science freaks are boring, zemat. i tend to spend a lot of time here before i wander over there - and not just because it's down a lot... it's more fun being knowledgeable about something and contribute than it is to be just one more voice in the din. when the "weird animal in north carolina" link was posted to mefi, i jumped on it to explain the critter - but by the time i hit "post" someone else had scooped me with the same info. damn slow-ass typing and careful link-checking...
  • I like monkeys.
  • I miss Gyan too. Dammit. And there have been a couple of AskMeFi posts recently that made me jump up and down and want to post answers too but I couldn't.
  • I miss him too. *sniffs* But MoFi's original purpose was to be a site for lurkers and wannabe members, so it's reasonable to expect people to leave when they get their coveted membership there.
  • Gyan is a chick.
  • Remember Gyan's comments in this thread? In retrospect, he seemed to be announcing that as soon as he got into Metafilter, he would be out of here, and didn't get that not everyone felt that way. So we'll miss him...
  • Gyan is a chick. Oops. My bad. We'll miss her.
  • Oops. Her. I hate it when I do that.
  • Gyan is still about, although posting less. Its all since posting that link to the hole...
  • Gyan is a guy. And I haven't abandoned MoFi. If you have, per chance, noticed, I post very infrequently at MeFi too (although more than here). Now that I have MeFi membership, it's *yawn*, nothing great. I'm just busy with some personal projects. I shall strive to post a link a day from this Monday.
  • BlueHorse: That would depend on how you look in a bikini, surely?
  • Gyan is a guy. A thousand pardons!!!
  • Gyan is a guy. Phew. We miss your prolificness, as you may have noticed.
  • BlueHorse: That would depend on how you look in a bikini, surely? Rodgerd: Well, let's just say it would certainly be distracting. Love, Yer GramMa
