Yoshimi Battles the Hip-Hop Robots There hasn't been a MoFi mashup post in a while, so... let the "This isn't music" discussion begin!

  • I also thought that Visionary track was the most well done. Here's my problem with the majority of this stuff, though -- do DJs like this understand the concept of flow? These emcees are rhyming the way they do for a reason. You can't take a verse recorded over a straight ahead 4/4 hip hop beat and just lay it over a techno-style track and expect it to work. A good majority of artists rhyme on the snare, which is simple enough for Beastie Boys, old school Tribe Called Quest, etc. But when emcees are dropping multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and diverting from the normal concepts of flow, you have to be a little bit more careful with how the beat drops, because a bad match can make even the most talented emcee sound like an idiot. I do have to say, though, Dangermouse seems to have gotten the concept. Hip hop purists may not have liked his album, but at least they'll admit the instrumentals were on point. With some of this other stuff though, you just have to say, WTF were they thinking?

  • Really like the original album by los Flaming Lips. Some tracks on this seem to work better than others. I prefer fusion w/ my hip-hop in any case. Mmm, gonna go listen to some jazzy Roots, mmm.
  • Oh yeah, and as for if it's music or not, I go with Duke Ellington's maxim: "If it sounds good, it _is_ good." Ergo music.
