Hardboiled Slanguage of the '30s and '40s Tough Guys and Deadly Dames

"You dumb mug get your mitts off the marbles before I stuff that mudpipe down your mush -- and tell your moll to hand over the mazuma." Yeah. Yeah. Yeah!

  • Meant to say I was tipped off to this by woods lot. Yeah.
  • I feel like I just sucked down a deck of cigarettes and forgot to blow out the smoke.
  • "The sucker with the schnozzle poured a slug but before he could scram out two shamuses showed him the shiv and said they could send him over." Now THAT'S English as she is spoke! The sad part is I've read so many of these stories the above quotes make perfect sense.
  • She had a heart like a twenty minute egg.
  • ...as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food.
  • Nobody gets the drop on Johnny Rocko, shee! Nobody!
  • I'm with zedediah 100%. only i've seen the movies and only read about half the books. like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to stay on my toes /naked gun
  • ...and Deadly Dames ...Ankles. Babes. Bims. Broads. Chicks. Dolls. Frails. Janes. Kittens. Sisters. Skirts. Twists. She was a dish, a looker, a real tomato.
  • "Johnny Tightlips, where'd you get shot??" "I ain't sayin'!" "But what do I tell the doctor??" "Tell 'im to go suck a lemon."
  • Besides the ones given here, Runyonese for 'gun' includes my favourite, 'the old equaliser', and occasionally 'That Thing'.
  • Philip Marlowe: My, my, my! Such a lot of guns around town and so few brains! You know, you're the second guy I've met today that seems to think a gat in the hand means the world by the tail. Love this stuff. Thanks beeswacky!
  • The first time I laid eyes on Terry Lennox he was drunk in a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith outside the terrace of The Dancers. - The Long Goodbye Good read.
  • This is a great resource for my novel. Thanks beeswacky!
  • f8xmulder, how's the novel coming along?
  • *Marlowe smirks after taking away the young tough's guns* "C'mon, kid. This'll put you in solid with your boss."
  • *Marlow* s/b *Spade* They were both Bogie, though.
