International Snow Sculpture Championship Some of them can be quite complicated. [via b3ta]

I happened to be up in Breckenridge during last year's competition, and these things are VERY impressive. (And bigger than the pictures make them seem too.) I'd never realized how much structural intergrity a determined team could infuse into a pile of snow.

Wow.

I spent much too much time looking at all of these yesterday, and they are amazing.

But I wonder what the judging criteria are? Based on purely sculptural grounds (the way the sculpture uses three dimensional space) or even techical (wow, they made snow do that?), I don't know that I would have agreed with them on the awards. Some of the first place winners - such as "His Mistress" seem to static compared to the grace or dynamism of some others. (Especially the second place 2002 winner, "Prometheus".)

Hey motherfuckers eat my dust.

Wow, now here's a reason to go on this hike up the threads. Look at those sights. Mind you, the fact that someone did this one does make me wonder if there's an H.P. Lovecraft Snow Sculpture competition, but so far, I haven't found one.

*Stands for awhile contemplating Cthulu done in snow with perhaps a Ryleth backdrop in ice.*

BearGuy will this do?

Shit, try this one.

Oh nice, very nice. Had to wait to get home to view that one, but nice.
