April 01, 2004
While those in the Blue debate Gmail's validity Google has come out with their April Fools Prank 2004.
As a bit of a workplace prankster I'm curious about some of my fellow monkey's favorite pranks. Do tell.
I'm re-recording my company's main telephone greeting in "Movie Phone" voice this yea.
-
Soo...Gmail is not a hoax? *gnaws knuckles* I'm lying low. Every year (every SINGLE year) I'm the prankee, not the pranker.
-
Ditto--I'm staying home, won't answer the phone, won't turn on the computer and won't believe anything my husband tells me that day. I'm a sucka, it's genetic.
-
wow that was, ummmm funny.
-
I was disappointed at the lack of April Fools' gags this year. Not even on Metafilter. If I'd been more organised, I would have turned the site literally upside down, but that'll have to wait till next year now.
-
Metafilter isn't yet on April 1st, tracicle. You crazy New Zealanders, living in the future and waiting impatiently for the rest of the world to catch up.

unless matt went completely insane, metafilter's been gagged.. so to speak.
-
Oh dear... for an April's Fool, the MeFi hack lacks a certain panache. Not exactly subtle. Or even amusing.
-
Where are the monkeys?

Oh dear... for an April's Fool, the MeFi hack lacks a certain panache. Not exactly subtle. Or even amusing. Yeah, but Matt Haughey does get a day off this way. *Silently prays tracicle doesn't leave us all monkeyless*
-
it's just some lame-ass CF wiki code with lots of bugs. I say embrace the chaos. I'm going to sleep now. Ha ha!
-
I dunno, I think MetaWiki's kind of funny. But maybe that's because I've run into one too many people who are just a little too gaga about this whole Wiki Wiki thing...
-
On the gmail thing, anybody look at the source for the page?
-
Well, I didn't expect Gmail to be a hoax, simply because I heard about Google about to offer a mail service, around a month back. Besides, I don't see anything much funny about offering a mail service.
-
The "lunar base" was muy underwhelming. But now I'm hopeful that Gmail is true...like Gyan, what would be funny about it? Then again, if they thought the lunar base was funny... Aw heck, I'll just admit it, I WANT one of those email addresses. ;)
-
On second thought, I think it's a joke. The lunar thingy is an obvious throw-off. I'm assuming that Google will launch a mail service, but not with the features touted here.
-
It's kind of a bad business decision to offer up new free services as an April Fool's joke. It's not funny, and people will be disappointed with your real offering--which has been pretty much a confirmed thing in the industry. Google webmail that is. I have friends working for the other webmail guys that are shitting themselves right now--but who have known about this for some time.
-
Well, I thought it was amusing... everybody's always clamoring for new memberships, so Matt did 'em one better. Gave up the whole site to the public. Let the monkeys run the castle, so to speak. And I think the whole "it's not funny, it can't be a prank" idea is sort of missing the point. It's April Fool's day. People are trying to trick you, or do something strange. Not amuse you.
