  • Oh my, that story broke my heart when I saw the film made from it as an episode of Twilight Zone 46 years ago. TZ gave 6-to-9-year-old me nightmares but my parents let me watch it because they were watching it too. But that one, I remember vividly, made me cry. And one thing my dad did not like was seeing his little man cry. Going back to it with that video (directed by Johnny Depp!) made me cry again, even though I knew exactly what was going to happen. Sidenote: that story scared me away from reading Bierce's "Devil's Dictionary" for years, even though it was something quite different. And I just googled up that website for the first time and am tickled pink! CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision.
