Ah! So this is where the confusion about Linkin Park and Sunshine came from.
The article mentions Faraday cages. Obviously, this would be where the Lost folks got the name for Daniel Faraday.

What they experienced was unalloyed awesomeness.
This story was discussed on NPR last evening from the perspective of new research being done on hallucinogens, specifically the similarity between drug-induced euphoria and euphoric states attained through prayer, meditation, etc. along with the "one-ness" described by many returning astronauts.
It's fascinating that the same areas of the brain are activated in all cases.
