From 1956-1964, East and West German sent a United Team. Why then and why did they stop, I wonder? If only there was some form of encyclopedia in online form...

Turns out they did. I don't remember this happening at all. And it was all New Zealand's fault, too.

It's interesting how that stabilizes as the century progresses, with a few exceptions.
