I once loved a woman, a child I'm told / I gave her my heart, but she wanted my soul... Suze Rotolo, the girl from the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, speaks about being in love with a 20 yr old Bob, so many years ago.

My favourite early-Bob album.
Nice post, n00b.

"what it was like to fall in love with Bob Dylan at 17" ... "Rotolo deeply loved Dylan, who was 20 when they met."

Is there a time warp, some bad fact checking, or just a strange misunderstanding.

I guess you can fall in love with someone before you meet them, but it's more of an infatuation at that point.

Or Rotolo, who was 17, fell in love with Dylan, who was 20 when they met.

This is interesting, thanks Cap'n.

On a point of order, however, the LA Times and Star articles seem to me identical save a couple of sub-heads.
How can Josh Getlin be both "Los Angeles Times Staff Writer" and providing an article that's "Special to the Star"? What does "Special to the Star" mean if it's a republication, as acknowledged at the end of the article.

What? We're supposed to read our own links now? When did this happen?

Yeah, that's kinda weird. Usually "special to" means a freelancer contribution.

I haven't heard "Freewheeling" in quite some time. Some of the songs I've heard so much, they don't anything for me anymore. Like "Hard Rain" and "Blowing in the Wind". But "Oxford Town" still packs a punch. And I remember Eddie Vedder doing a great version of "Masters of War" during Dylan's 30th anniversary concert.

I started becoming a fan in around '94. Freewheelin' was my first Dylan album. "I Shall Be Free" was my first favorite Dylan song. Who knew Dylan was funny?

Around that time, I was in Columbus, Ohio and my friend bought a Dylan bootleg that had about five incredibly drunk outtakes of the song. Loved it.

"I Shall Be Free"

Well, I took me a woman late last night
I's three-fourths drunk she looked all right
'Til she started peelin' off her onion gook
She took off her wig, said, "How do I look" ?
I's high flyin', bare naked ...Out the window.

Well, sometimes I might get drunk
Walk like a duck and smell like a skunk
Don't hurt me none, don't hurt my pride
'Cause I got my little lady right by my side
(She's a tryin' a hide pretendin'
She don't know me).

I's out there paintin' on the old wood shed
When a can a black paint it fell on my head
I went down to scrub and rub
But I had to sit in back of the tub
(Cost a quarter
Half price).

Well, my telephone rang it would not stop
It's President Kennedy callin' me up
He said, "My friend, Bob, what do we need to make the country grow" ?
I said, "My friend, John, "Brigitte Bardot,
Anita Ekberg
Sophia Loren"
Country'll grow.

Well, I got a woman five feet short
She yells and hollers and squeals and snorts
She tickles my nose pats me on the head
Blows me over and kicks me out of bed
(She's a man eater
Meat grinder
Bad loser).

Oh, there ain't no use in me workin' alla time
I got a woman who works herself blind
Works up to her britches, up to her neck
Write me letters and sends me checks
(She's a humdinger
Folk singer).

Late one day in the middle of the week
Eyes were closed I was half asleep
I chased me a woman up the hill
Right in the middle of an air drill
(I jumped a fallout shelter
I jumped the string bean
I jumped the TV dinner
I jumped the shot gun).

Now, the man on the stand he wants my vote
He's a-runnin' for office on the ballot note
He's out there preachin' in front of the steeple
Tellin' me he loves all kinds-a people
(He's eatin' bagels
He's eatin' pizza
He's eatin' chitlins).

Oh, set me down on a television floor
I'll flip the channel to number four
Out of the shower comes a football man
With a bottle of oil in his hand
(Greasy kid stuff
What I want to know, Mr. Football Man, is
What do you do about Willy Mays
Martin Luther King
Olatunji).

Well, the funniest woman I ever seen
Was the great-granddaughter of Mr. Clean
She takes about fifteen baths a day
Wants me to grow a moustache on my face
(She's insane).

Well, ask me why I'm drunk alla time
It levels my head and eases my mind
I just walk along and stroll and sing
I see better days and I do better things
(I catch dinosaurs
I make love to Elizabeth Taylor ...
Catch hell from Richard Burton !).

I think there should be a maximum length to comments so that people don't post lyrics to ancient songs buy old dead guys. ;-)

Dead? Not.

Well, not completely...

mea culpa.

> What? We're supposed to read our own links now? When did this happen?

Part of the new guidelines for MOFI EXTREEM®, I believe.

I wouldn't know -- I didn't pay the five bucks.

I have this album (1963 stereo, good condition but no inner sleeve). Any offers?

I'll give you Olatunji for it. (I like saying "Olatunji").

"I Shall Be Free" is where i first came across him, also the word "chitlins".

So I offer you Olatunji and a side order of chitlins.

No girl from the north country?

*cough*

I'm keeping the Girl for myself. But I'll go as far as throwing in the string bean and the shotgun.

Oh, that Girl song is already ON this album, along with those other references. A REAL shot gun would be a fair trade though, since this copy is standard issue, with no additional tracks on it. Darn! It could have been worth $25,000.

Bob Dylan turns up at Neil Young's childhood home for a tour.

"Get off my lawn, Bob Dylan!"

I keed, I keed. Heh.

So...Neil and Bob...is that your names or is that what you do?

More on the encounter, and how it will lead to the endless mockery of the lady of the house.
