"If the host is sitting there thinking about his next joke, he isn't listening."
Merv Griffin, creator of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!", is dead at 82.

More on Merv.

he was a giant in many ways. I am sad to see him go, but glad he brought us our nightly Sajak.

What a career!

What a life.

(Did anyone else find that the chronology of the article read like Memento?)

even more on Merv

Thanks, Queso -- I didn't know about any of that.

Not to defend him for his acts of omission, but did he identify himself as a gay man, or did he think of all that as just something on the side which didn't really count, so to speak? Self-loathing might explain a bit.

very privately, apparently, but publicly it was never mentioned or acknowledged-- the Malcolm Forbes analogy seems fairly apt.

As well, "dating" a Gabor sister is a pretty big red rainbow flag... And sexually harrassing Denny Terrio? *shudder*

*goes and googles to see if "gabor" is Hungarian for "beard"*

*snort*

To be fair, we don't know what he did or did not say to the Reagans when they had a chance to act quickly at the start of the crisis, but whatever it was, he didn't convince them.

If he came out, and if others like Rock Hudson came out -- perhaps things would have gone differently. Not all the victims of the closet are on the inside.

But still. The man brought us Trebek -- I have to give him some benefit of the doubt.

They were playing his recording of "I've Got a Lovaly Bunch of Coconuts" on the radio today as a tribute.

His open-mouthed kiss with Kathryn Grayson in his debut film, So This Is Love (1953), was the first such kiss in a Hollywood film since the introduction of the Production Code in 1934.

MERV GRIFFIN!!!

Forgot about that one...

That was awesome.

Evan Dorkin did a nice tribute on his LJ. You should check it out, Koks.

I don't know if I want to continue in a world that no longer includes either Merv Griffin or Don Knotts.

Me either.

*snif*

Long-lost COLOUR versions of the "Merv Griffin" Milk & Cheese poster available for purchase.

Thanks. You can get that for me for Christmas.
