Steely Dan - The Making of "Peg" Y'know I'm starting to see the benefit of this whole U-2be thing. Here's a great 10 minute video with solo'ed tracks and commentary from the Steelers about the making of one of the hippest "13-bar blues" songs, "Peg". Also, The Dissection of "Deacon Blues". via Fagenfilter

Now, if I can just find the part about the drum solo in "Aja", it will in fact be a Fabulous Fun Flash Friday. Heh. I Love the Intertubes.

  • Pete, YOU are my Boddhisattva.
  • Didja see the "My Old School" vid I posted in the guitar solos thread? Worth watching. /I-prefer-the-earlier-stuff
  • Well, I'm no behatted Ubersexy jeans magnate, but thanks all the same Fester! HWingo's Previously Posted "My Old School" link
  • Ya kno, I always thought SD took the easy way out. Cool jazz mixed with half-mockery of black accent. There's no question they were acquainted with the cool jazz canon. Maybe if they listened to some Howlin' Wolf along the way?
  • God help me, I love Steely Dan. They seem to be a band that is on many people's "guilty pleasures" list. I'm not sure where the guilt factor comes in. Is orococo right, that they took the easy way out, so to speak? Any other theories?
  • mixed with half-mockery of black accent. Not sure I see where that comes in. kittenhead, I think it's just due to being extremely popular and the soundtrack to a lot of holier-than-thou druggies from high school or something. Musically, I think they hold up really well.
  • This is from the delicious Aja DVD, which is a thing of great delight and wonder. Pete: That solo has blown my mind every time I've heard it for the 25 years or so that I've loved Aja. Steve Gadd is one of my favorite drummers, if not my very favorite. If you like how tight and intense and awesome he is, you should check out the page on him over at DrummerWorld. It's got a bunch of breathtaking stuff that really shows off the reason he can sit behind a kit and make the beat that's behind my life's great memories. Wicked good. Thanks for posting this.
  • Oh man, I'm a Steely Dan addict! I admit it. Nothing soothes likes a good dose of Steely Dan at the Gorge Amphitheater as the sun is going down, a little stoned, good bottle of....whatever. Oh yeah. Good times.
  • Thanks for that Steve Gadd link Steely Duran! Geez, even when he's pounding away it's so light and breezy and spot-on. Makes me feel like I'm an overweight spastic monkey playing upside-down with one stick and one rock. Speaking of, I spoke too soon - they don't even mention that jaw-dropping drum solo in the video. ???? That's like making a video of the Mona Lisa and forgetting to mention the smile thing. While the DVD looks like a steal (used from $5.95!), I was excited that it might be 96kHz DVD audio also, but it seems to just be the movie. Although there's a better thread for it, the Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary CD +DVD has the original mono mix (not usually found, since the CD that barely came out at all was a rush of the stereo mix), the proper stereo mix, and on the DVD a 96kHz version along with a 40 minute making-of documentary and an excerpt from a BBC show where George Martin interviews Brian Wilson. (Joy!)
  • > good bottle of.... If you're chillin' at the Manatee Bar nothing refreshes like some Cuervo Gold, or some smooth retsina, or maybe just a Coke & rum or a PiƱa Colada. How about a Tanqueray? Some Scotch whisky? Jim Beam and Jack Daniels? Make mine a double, Sam! There's a rumor they've got grapefruit wine. A pool of margheritas is probably overkill. Well, maybe lots of beer. Then again, you can't beat a cup of java or some some soothing herb tea or even a simple glass of water. Okay, I've made up my mind: I'll have a Black Cow.
  • *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap*! nicely done!
