Facebook is being mined for your personal information. (flash movie) Yeah, Newsflash. Someone read the Terms of Service. It provides boatloads of marketing data on kids for free. The short animation claims venture money came from a very a conservative PAC. Plus some ties to "The Company". Apparently.

The tinfoil hats are out, but the marketing aspects of Facebook are interesting. Who uses Facebook anyway? Heck I dunno. But somebody must. Cause I seen about it on the teevee box.

Rumors that MonkeyFilter is a front for the TIA office are completely (wink) untrue. *wink wink*. Now please enter your SSN and PIN numbers. You may already be a winner!

I can't watch the movie right now, but that a place used by MANY, MANY college students - many with liberal causes, and with online group membership that shows how we'd vote on socially significant causes - being mined for the gov't concerns me severely. Yes, I have information on it. All my college friends do. (And we're in grad school.) My brother does.

Heck, people use it to organize. If a conservative group is watching and can monitor the organization of protests and the like, that is so not cool.

However, my PIN number is 5. My SSN number is 1. Most people's SSN number is 1, because most people haven't had to have more than one.

This seems a little alarmist, but it does seem best to treat facebook and any other social networking site as a quasi-public space and therefore limit what you put on it, and yes, I've a facebook page too. Mind you, there is very little on it you couldn't glean from other online sources such as, for example, my CV.

I would offer that everything on the internet is not just a quasi-public space, but an entirely public space.

I do agree with RtD. I had a profile in Facebook, and some racist thugs were using it - or the blog - to get information on friends, etc. Of course, I "deactivated" it, but the info is there.

And the attackers already know where I live. Bummer.

Yup, 1984 has come, and refuses to go away.

It's no problem, this information is needed for a totally innocuous purpose.

Hey, it's not spam, it's advertising!

Ya know, people are lurking MoFi for information, too. That's why I drink cool, refreshing Coca Cola.

WE KNOW ALL ABOUT YOU, CHIMPIE.

Put down the Coke and stand up against the wall.

eek

It's a fair cop, GramMa, but society's to blame.

I put my face on Facebook
So the world could see my face.
I added my gmail address,
It's all in lower case.
Of course I linked right to my blog,
That's my cathartic space
Where I address my struggles as
Part of the human race.

My blog includes my street address
So friends can mail me stuff.
It talks about the drugs I use
When liquor's not enough.
My post last month about my Dad
Was prolly way to tough,
But he is such an asshole.
Hope his boss reads this, sure 'nuff.

So, anyway, what's this I read
'Bout Facebook being mined?
Those fucking corporate hypocrites!
Think of all my stuff they'll find!
They have no right to do this,
It's an affront to all mankind!
The stuff I post onto the web
Is private, bear in mind!

> everything on the internet is not just a quasi-public space, but an entirely public space.

And not just a public space, but a public database, or a heavily recorded public space. Moreover, it's a public database that will not always behave in predictable ways (cf. usenet -> dejanews -> google groups).

Drink responsibly, enjoy red red wine.

)))!! Nicely . . er . . octrained? Ralphie!
