Well, must admit these enchant me, even the unexpectedly beetle-oid folk of Cor Blok.

The Jansson ones are vaguely reminiscent of Edward Gorey's book covers.
Lord of the Rings meets Bosch meets Maurice Sendak.

I like Jansson's work as pictures but not as illustrations to the Hobbit, if that makes any sense.
Enjoyed browsing the Alan Lee works at the last link. I always liked the mood he achieved.
Makes perfect sense. I regard them as pictures, too, knowing no one except John Tenniel ever illustrates a book I like more satisfactorily than what I envision in reading it.
