Get your chopper out! Raleigh, that designer of such tasteful bikes as the Commando and the Grifter, are relaunching their best-known design -- the Chopper: 'Loz Cox, product manager for the Chopper at Raleigh, said: "The new Chopper has been restyled. The biggest changes are the lightweight alloy frame - the original was steel - and the position of the gear lever.' I can't wait!
  • It slices! It dices! It makes mounds of julienne fries! oops, wrong chopper...

  • wow! raleighs were WAY too expensive for my family, so back in the 1960s my brother and i got schwinn stingrays. his was blue, mine was purple. groovy.
  • I thought the fad of goateed hipsters riding vintage coaster brake three speeds was passe? No?
  • I had a Stingray, too, complete with the impale-yourself five-speed shifter on the bar. Custom banana seat, colored spokes, a flapper noisemaker on the rear wheel... it was groovy. boss. (same word, one decade later) Hmmm... might have been a Manta Ray.
  • hey goetter, did you look like this guy? circa 1972. far out. what'd we call that big bar behind the back -- the sissy bar?
  • Holy howler monkey, SideDish-- that's me! And, yeah, it had the sissy bar, too, with padding and wrapping up the back to make it like a chopper pillion seat. The bike was red, just as it appears in the photo. 1973 would have been the year.
  • oh here's a classic! a typical "on my stingray in my pajamas in front of the christmas tree" photo. hee.
  • Stingraaaaaay, Stingray! Sorry, got the theme song stuck in my head.
  • Aaargh! The Grifter! My first bike!
  • Incredible name for a bicycle.
