Plantains! Me like Plantains! You like plantains?! Here a thread be to plantains!
  • Grilled Plantain recipe: Wait until plantains are a dark yellow/brown. Throw them on the grill Wait until they pop open Take them out of the peel (careful! hot!) Eat them (You can also make some kinda froofy ginger/lemon butter stuff with it - but they don't need it.) FanTAStico!
  • Drunk plantains! warning: contains Comic Sans
  • damn that sounds awe*hic* - awesome. Thanks PA! As soon as I rest*hic* restock the rum I'm gonna make that.
  • I read some interesting factiods about plantains and banana cultivars generally in John Reader's highly recommendable "Africa: a Biography of a Continent": ...to the surprise of everyone it was discovered that none of the sixty cultivars [of bananas in Uganda] exist anywhere but in Africa. In fact, African cultivars constitute a larger pool of diversity among cultivated bananas than is known anywhere else in the world. West of the region in which the banana attained such remarkable levels of diversity, the diversity and social influence of the plantain ... is even more impressive. From the lakes and the Ruwenzori mountains to the Atlantic coast, throughout the equatorial rainforest, the plantain is a staple food found growing profusely in every village ... Plantains - even more than bananas - are perfectly adapted to equatorial rainforests ... the cultivation of plantains and bananas was a major component of development that made a tremendous impact upon the human demography of equitorial Africa during the thousand years up to AD 1500 ... Wherever the advantages of banana and plantain cultivation took hold, the numbers of people belonging in and to a community at last began to exceed the number labouring to feed it. [page 293-4, 1998 ed.] I urge you lazy sons and/or daughters of bitches to write a monograph on "plantains and bananas and the history of equitorial African civilization" at once, although I am too lazy drinking beer and too stupid to understand it.
  • Plantains are fantastic deep fried and dipped in banana sauce! A Costa Rican friend recently introduced me to this treat.
  • Interesting quid, although I am also too liquored up and ignorant to truly appreciate it. I'm tellin' ya - just throw 'em on the ol' grilleroo. You'll be amazed at how good they taste with no prep and nothing on the side.
  • I am also too liquored up and ignorant to truly appreciate it Hey, me too!
  • Oh right I said that :(
  • Here, have a grilled plantain. It goes great with a shot of whatever.
  • I am also too liquored up and ignorant to truly appreciate it Hey, me too! Damn you and your timezone! I'm still at work, you bastards!
  • A+. Now whose paper is next?
  • Mmmmm, Goya frozen fried plantains...
  • Hmm. So doesn't this belong on the wiki? Along with the other recipe threads that some of us REALLY LOVED, but were chided for? It really is nice to know about plantains, but I don't think they should get special treatment, since I've waited a long while to get even. Though, I'm too lazy to go back and see if any of the contributors here were among those who complained about recipes on the front page back then. But, if you did, you know who you are. On the other hand, if I post a link or two to some relatively lame one-ingredient sites about a type of food that I've become entranced with, do I get a free pass? Sorry, not trying to be a nudge, but I would like to know where the dividing line is.
  • This post links to something else. Something that's not a self-link.
  • MonkeyFilter: I am also too liquored up and ignorant to truly appreciate it.
  • Ha! Good one GramMa! *hic* *urrrrpp* path, sorry I dunno I just felt frivolous and very pro-plantain. I would say if you dig something with one ingredient and want to make it a FPP then rock the casbah, so to speak. What's the ingredient, btw? Did I mention that Kitchen Confidential is awesomeness sauteed?
  • path, I think the root of the LaGatta-Eekings lay in her self-linking. As Christophine remarked back then, there are a number of recipe threads already archived -- anyone so inclined can add to those since no thread here ever closes. Don't think anyone finds food or recipe links or comments objectionable per se, least of all those having to with bananas or plaintains. Ye know, it's almost scary, the number of things monkeys seem willing to put in their mouths. ;]
  • I second the awesomeness of Kitchen Confidential. Don't order fish on Fridays!
  • and avoid the hollandaise!
  • Jamaican Cooking. In their words: YAH MON!!!!!
  • ain't no hola bake daze
  • A grilled plantain I can't complain A zing like cocaine You must be insane To try and refrain A plan to obtain The holy mundane Of the plain ol plantain
  • To everything there is a season, A time for plantain, and a time for basil. For swarming attacks there isn't a reason Throw in some mole, now there's razzle-dazzle! Where's my Hasenfeffer?
