very interesting--thanks! (but doesn't the author leave out trial-and-error as a learning tool for acquiring knowledge and verification for beliefs?)
The problem here is the same as with some of Piaget's famous experiments on perceived conservation of quantities - you can't really tell whether the child fails to grasp the basic concept or just misunderstands the question. Margaret Donaldson covered this in "Children's Minds". There's a BBC interview here.
