Aussie Galah Recently I was presented with a female Australian Pink and Grey Galah, as viewed in link. She has all the accoutrements for her physical needs (in fact, she is living in Galah luxury) yet I fail in giving her an appropriate name. 'Polly' is definitely not an option! Ideas, suggestions (for bird names!) from MonkeyFilter denizens will be greeted with glad cries.
  • Bernard.
  • Dinkum.
  • Nulla-Nulla.
  • Skite.
  • Tuppy.
  • These birds are everywhere, you know, over here. They are common as anything. You see 'em hanging around on the telegraph lines or wandering around at the park eating seeds in the grass. Galahs are traditionally known as rather boisterous and noisy, but stupid (a flock on the road will famously fly *at* the oncomming car) so much so that Aussie slang term for a noisy show-off or loud person is a Galah.
  • Blue, Cobba, Mite, Twitsa, Rosie, Drongo.... (keep its feed lean btw to avoid fatty tumors)
  • Kalimban, Tirri, Akala, Malka, Mirrhi (little girl)...
  • Shiva.
  • 'Dinkum' might do at a pinch but somehow - no, it doesn't really have enough bite! 'Bernard'! Chyren, I suspect that you are not taking the primacy of my Galah-naming dilemma with due gravity.
  • I retract that last statement, Skite appeals!
  • 'Drongo'? Hmmm, Drongo! 'Shiva'could work, she certainly seems to enjoy a degree of savage delight when lacerating the digits!
  • Gala(h)tea
  • I retract my Shiva nomination. Call her H5N1.
  • Barbie. as in "throw another shrimp on..."
  • Adelaide
  • Sydney (*smacks self on forehead)
  • 'H5N1' aka 'Highly Improbable'!
  • 'Sydney', hmm, I prefer 'Alias'
  • Or 'panic'.
  • Moite (ie. mate)
  • (Only in the Eastern States, dj)
  • Bluey
  • Fatty Tumor?
  • Godzilla, from a song I like called "Chicken Joe:" "She's not a monster, she's just a little bird. A little bird named Godzilla." It's by these guys.
  • Edna, Kiri, Joanie.
  • Maybe Leeleet. Birds dig names that they can imagine themselves saying. How do I know that? Birds told me. And gave me a buck to keep it quiet, so I guess I can kiss my eyes goodbye. Crap!
  • Bloke who lives next to my Granny has a Galah that sits on his shoulder at all times, she tells me. It talks. Apparently has a 'gravely voice'. Granny Chy could not, however, give me any tips on a good name for the bird. "Er.. 'cocky'?" she opined.
  • There is of course only one name for this bird: Bruce If you know your python you will know why... :)
  • Matilda
  • Sheila
  • Ethel. Mildred. Matilda. Britney. Rhoda. Agnes. Juanita. Fanny.
  • Tina Sparkles! (including exclamation point) or Priscilla
  • Rosa? Coco? Dorothy? more here. and here's a great resource for nutrition questions--Chy is right, they are susceptible to fatty tumors.
  • Tallulah, darling.
  • "Ethel. Mildred" Both departed great aunts of mine. Myrtle still with us. Vera Charlotte, my Granny, still with us. /wipes a tear
  • "Chy is right.." Listen, everybody, just remember this, always, and there'll never be any bloody problems.
  • Both of my grandmothers were named Helen. Two Helens agree that I'm the best grandchild ever. I think you should name your bird Koko in honor of this day. Or Helen, whatever.
  • Weird.
  • Cora.
  • Ethyl! Mildred! Myrtle! Vera Charlotte! Quoth I, rising falsetto with each name. (High 'C' at Charlotte). Dear gods, one hesitates even to begin to imagine what name(s) you may be afflicted with Chyren, oh sage! No no, not 'Cocky'! My Granny is a Sarah Jane, innocuous indeed, and Koko has a certain 'purity' but incongruous from my lips. One imagines a librarian's cat. heh
  • I prefer M. Python's 'Eric' to that of 'Bruce'.
  • I will try her with 'Tallulah.' A tribute, and in trust that she may have a "colourful life!" (Subject to "Her Galah-ness'" approval) If she impales another digit with beak, it will be back to the 'monkey-board'!
  • Coppermac wins.
  • Impaling digits? You might want to look here for help on that.
  • Patita, many thanks for 'Clickbirds' link.
  • very welcome, jeraboam! is this your first parrot?
  • No bird has ever been better named than Dorothy Parker's "Onan". I say it's due for a revival.
  • Or maybe something clever at first, that'll only get more grating on your nerves over time -- like "Sir Galah-head". Ha! Dorothy Parker, I ain't.
  • Salutations Patita. Yes, Tallulah is my first parrot, though I recall my parents having 2 when I was but a tot. Unfortunately, my parents are not around to pass on their parrot-wisdom. Tallulah's advent into my life was unexpected (to say the least) so advice and links from Monkey Filter denizens is very much appreciated. She must like her new name as her digit-chomps have ceased. It has been something of a surprise to find myself falling completely under Tallulah's 'spell'. I am rapidly becoming her besotted slave. Who woulda 'thunk it', one is "in love" with one's parrot.. heh .. Hmm, I wonder, is this healthy?
  • You're in good company with a parrot for sure! Several monkeys have avian companions, and I've got a pionus winking at me as I type this. You're lucky indeed to have such an unexpected boon. Both of the links I gave are very new owner friendly and capable of answering all kinds of questions. The Feeding Feathers people are top notch and very sweet. I hope that you and Tallulah are happy together for many years to come!
  • Patita: I've got a pionus winking at me as I type this. You'll never believe how startled I was when I first (mis)read that!
  • oh BlueHorse, that's a nice thought to start the day! here's a better visual, in case you were wondering.
